BirdLife International was founded in 1922 by [[United States|American]] [[ornit


hologist]]s [[T. Gilbert Pearson]] and [[Jean Theodore Delacour]] as the ''Inter
national Committee for Bird Protection''. This [[lobbying]] group changed its na

==Regional work==
BirdLife International has conservation work programmes in [http://www.birdlife.

e and Central Asia], the [http://www.birdlife.org/middle-east Middle East], and

==Global programmes==
Within each of these regions, BirdLife has nine Global Programmes - some are wel
l established, others are more recent and responding to specific conservation is
sues. In addition to the Global Programmes there are programmes specific to a re
gion. Together these Global and Regional Conservation Programmes help the Partne
rship focus and work around common priorities. They provide the framework for pl
anning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating our conservation work. BirdLife

==Magazine==
BirdLife International publishes a quarterly magazine - '[http://www.birdlife.or
g/worldwide/support-us/join-us#World%20Bird%20Club World Birdwatch]'. The magazi
ne contains recent news and authoritative articles about birds, their habitats,
and their conservation around the world.
==Red List==
BirdLife International is the official [[Red List]] Authority for birds for the
[[International Union for Conservation of Nature|IUCN]]. In the latest assessmen
t in 2012, 1,313 species of bird are considered threatened with extinction (i.e.
in the categories of Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable). This re
presents 13% of the total of 10,064 extant bird species in the world.
