birthday, they were burying him in
a cemetery.
Holding back tears, Hoffmans
mother, Deanna Hoffman, described a young police officer and
Air Force veteran who lived for
serving others and rarely took a
day off.
Chris grew into an honorable
and hardworking man, Deanna
Hoffman said before the courtroom Friday, displaying a photograph of her son. He was always
willing and ready to help a friend or

Lifeguards save hundreds from drowning each

year at the Jersey Shore, but its not easy work
SUSANNE CERVENKA @SCERVENKA

lifeguards may look like their only worry is how much

sun theyll get this afternoon.
But like a sports car, theyll go from zero to 60 in
seconds, racing into the ocean to pluck a life out of the
rough surf or a rip current. Last year, it was 525 lives
saved in Long Branch, to be exact.
I think most people have a stereotype of lifeguards
getting a tan and hanging out at the beach. Not really
performing much of a public service, said Gene Hession, lifeguard training officer for Long Branch, and
president of the Monmouth County chapter of the U.S.
Lifesaving Association.
But that couldnt be further from the truth.
