SECTION 15140 - SUPPORTS AND ANCHORS

USE: Furnishing and installing piping and duct supports.

NOTES TO SPECIFIER:

A. Options within paragraphs are identified by enclosure in brackets;


blank spaces enclosed by brackets [_____] provide for information to
be inserted, as appropriate, to individual projects.

B. TO AVOID CONFLICTING REQUIREMENTS AND COSTLY MISTAKES, the specifier


must edit (delete, substitute or add to the text). The remaining
paragraphs must be renumbered.

C. DELETE FOR FINAL COPY: Notes to the Specifier, located between lines
of asterisks; all [brackets], underlining, boldface, and italics,

SUPPORTS AND ANCHORS

PART 1: GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY:

A. Section Includes: [Furnishing] [and] [installing] [piping supports for water piping]

1.3 SUBMITTALS:

A. General: Submittals shall be according to Section 01300 - Submittals.

B. Manufacturer's Literature: Submit [ ] copies of the manufacturer's descriptive


data for hangers and supports to be used on this project.

C. Shop Drawings: Submit [ ] copies of shop drawings for fabricated pipe or


equipment hangers and supports to be used on this project.

PART 2: PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS:

A. Pipe Hangers and Supports:

1. Provide MSS-SP-58 hanger and supports according to MSS-SP-69.

2. Hangers for pipe sizes 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches, shall be adjustable wrought
steel ring.

3. Hangers for pipe sizes 2-inches to 4-inches and cold pipe sizes 6-inches and
over, adjustable wrought steel clevis.

4. Hangers for hot pipe sizes 6-inches and over, adjustable steel yoke and cast
iron roll.

5. Multiple or trapeze hangers shall be steel channels with welded spacers and
hanger rods, cast iron roll and stand for hot pipe sizes 6-inches and over.

6. Wall support for pipe sizes to 3-inches, shall be cast iron hook.

7. Wall support for pipe sizes 4 inches and over shall be welded steel bracket
and wrought steel clamp, adjustable steel yoke and cast iron roll for hot pipe
sizes 6 inches and over.

8. Vertical support shall be steel riser clamps.

9. Floor Support for hot pipe, sizes 6 inches and over shall be adjustable cast
iron roll and stand, steel screws and concrete pier or steel support.

B. Hanger Rods: Shall be steel hanger rods, [threaded both ends,] [threaded one end,]
or [continuous threaded].

C. Duct Hangers and Supports:

1. Duct hangers and supports shall be according to Section IV of SMACNA


Manual, HVAC Duct Construction Standards.

2. Hangers shall be galvanized steel band iron or rolled angle and 3/8 inch rods.

3. Wall supports shall be galvanized steel band or fabricated angle bracket.

4. Vertical support at floor shall be rolled angle.

D. Sleeves:

1. Pipes through floors shall be formed with 18 gauge galvanized steel.

2. Round ducts shall be formed with galvanized steel.

3. Rectangular ducts shall be formed with galvanized steel or wood.

4. Size large enough to allow for movement due to expansion and to provide for
continuous insulation.

E. Flashing:

1. Steel flashing shall be 26 gauge galvanized steel.

2. Lead flashing shall be five lb/sq ft sheet for waterproofing.

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION:

A. Verification of Conditions: The Contractor shall locate hangers, supports and


accessories to support piping, ductwork, valves and concentrated loads.

3.2 INSTALLATION:

A. Pipe Hangers and Supports: Support horizontal steel and copper piping as follows:

1. Install hangers to provide minimum 1/2 inch clear space between finished
covering and adjacent work.

2. Place a hanger within one foot of each horizontal elbow.

3. Use hangers which are vertically adjustable 1-1/2 inch minimum after piping is
erected.

4. Where several pipes can be installed in parallel and at same elevation,


provide multiple or trapeze hangers.

5. Where practical, support riser piping independently of connected horizontal


piping.

B. Low Velocity Duct Hanger and Supports:

1. Hanger Minimum Sizes:


(a) Up to 30 inches wide: 1 inch x 16 ga at 10 ft
spacing.
a) 31 inches to 48 inches wide: 1-1/2 inches x 16 ga at 10
ft spacing.
(c) Over 48 inches wide: 1-1/2 inches 16 ga at 8 feet spacing.

2. Horizontal Duct on Wall Supports Minimum Sizes:


(a) Up to 18 inches wide: 1 1/2 inches x
16 ga or 1 inch x 1 inch x 1/8 inch at 8 ft spacing.
(b) Nineteen inches to 40 inches wide: 1
1/2 inches x 1 1/2 inches x 1/8 inches at 4 ft
spacing.

3. Vertical Duct on Wall Supports Minimum Sizes: At 12 ft 0-inch spacing:


a) Up to 24 inches wide: 1 1/2 inches x 16 ga.
(b) 25 inches to 36 inches wide: 1 inch x 1 inch x 1/8 inch.
c) 37 inches to 48 inches wide: 1 1/4 inch x 1 1/4 inch x 1/8 inch.

4. Vertical Duct Floor Supports Minimum Size: Riveted or Screwed into Duct:
(a) Up to 60 inches wide: 1 1/2 inches x 1
1/2 inches x 1/8 inch.
(b) Over 60 inches wide: 2 inches x 2 inches x 1/8 inch.

C. Medium and High Velocity Duct Hangers and Supports:

1. Rectangular Duct Hangers Minimum Sizes:


(a) Up to 36 inches wide: 2 at 1 inch x 16 ga at 10 ft spacing.

(a) 37 inches to 60 inches wide: 2 at 1
inch x 16 ga at 8 ft spacing.
(c) 61 inches to 120 inches wide: 2 at 1 1/2 inches x 12 ga at 8 ft spacing
and 2 inches x 2 inches x 1/4 inch-trapeze.
(d) 121 inches to 240 inches wide: 3 at 3/8-inch diameter at 4 ft spacing
and 2 1/2 inches x 2 1/2 inches x 3/16-inch trapeze.

2. Round Duct Hangers Minimum Sizes: At 10 ft spacing:


(a) Up to 18 inches diameter: 1 inch x 16 ga.
(b) 19 inches to 36 inches diameter: 1 inch x 12 ga.
(c) 37 inches to 50 inches diameter: 1 1/2 inches x 12 ga.
(d) 51 inches to 84 inches diameter: 2 at 1 1/2 inches x 12 ga from girth
reinforcing angle.

3. Vertical Duct Floor Support Minimum Sizes: Rivet to duct and tie angles
together with rod, angles or cinch band.
(a) Up to 48 inches wide: 1 1/2 inches x 1 1/2 inches x 1/8 inch.
(b) Over 48 inches wide: 2 inches x 2 inches x 3/16 inch.

D. Flashing:

1. Flash and counterflash when mechanical equipment passes through


roof.

2. Flash vent and soil pipes projecting 3 inch minimum above finished roof
surface with lead worked 1 inch minimum into hub, 8 inch minimum clear on
sides with minimum 24 inch x 24 inch sheet size.

E. Sleeves:

1. Set sleeves in position in advance of concrete work. Provide suitable


reinforcing around sleeves.

2. Extend sleeves through potentially wet floors 1 inch above finished floor level.
Caulk sleeves full depth and provide floor plate.

3. Where piping or ductwork passes through floor, ceiling or wall, close off space
between pipe or duct and construction with non-combustible insulation.
Provide tight fitting metal caps on both sides and caulk.

4. Install chrome plated escutcheons where piping passes through finished


surfaces.

PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

4.1 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT:

A. Units: The work described in this section will not be measured for payment.

4.2 BASIS OF PAYMENT:

A. Payment: No direct payment for the work described under this section will be
made. The Contractor shall include consideration for this item in the bid price for
other items of the Contract.
