1 BACKGROUND/ OVERVIEW
The proposed project is entitled DOH Medical Complex: Research, Medical and Recreational
Therapy Center. The project aims to be the center for advanced medical treatment in
cardiology and oncology; to encourage sick people to undergo treatment in the country rather
than travelling to other places that provides the treatment they need and further enhance the
benefits of recreational therapy to introduce alternative ways of treatment.
From 2010, the latest statistics of National Epidemiology Center (NEC) of Department of
Health (DOH), the top among 10 leading causes of mortality in the Philippines is cause by
cardiovascular disease with 42.90% - 20.40% male and 22.50% female. And from the latest
printed book, Preventing chronic diseases, a vital investment, statistics all over the world,
60% of the population died because of chronic diseases. 17,528,000 people died in
cardiovascular disease and 7,586,000 people died in cancer.
In the Philippines, most of the people really depend on medical treatment. Thus, recreational
treatments aren't given much attention that hospitals in the Philippines lack developments for
alternative ways of treating disease such as swimming pools for bones and joints conditions,
fitness center for cardiovascular conditions, and other recreational spaces that will provide
effective physical healings to the sick people.
Addressing these issues, the proposed project is a DOH Medical complex composed of
Research Institute, Medical and Recreational Therapy Center. The Medical center is a level
IV hospital which caters the usual departments of a hospital and now provides advanced level
of medical treatment for cardiology and oncology. Recreational therapy advocates people
must not only depend on medical treatment but to explore and try physical therapies which
may help them for faster recovery. And Research Institute addresses to continually study
other possible treatments for these diseases to lessen the number of people affected.
The proponent of this project is the Philippine Hospital Project Development Corporation, a
subsidiary of VAMED Engineering is Austria, a leading European hospital consulting,
engineering and development company with over 470 health care projects in 50 countries.
