editor's note

hether this is your familys first expatriation or your family is seasoned in countryhopping, one of the most important considerations when relocating is your chil-

drens schooling. Luckily, Shanghai offers a wide and expanding range of high quality
educational options to suit the needs of all families, some of which you may not have encountered before. And no matter how experienced you are in moving around the world, it
always helps to have some guidance to direct your early enquiries.
Shanghai Familys annual School Directory, now in its fourth year, provides parents with
an invaluable reference guide to Shanghais schools, covering toddler daycare to postgraduate study options.
The directory has been thoughtfully divided into five sections: international schools, local schools with international divisions, preschools and kindergartens, further education
and enrichment programs. Our easy-to-use maps covering Puxi and Pudong will help you
navigate the location of international schools and their proximity to popular expatriate
residential areas.
To give you an overview of Shanghais school system, Jeffry Stubbs, chairman of the
Shanghai International Schools Association, answers some frequently asked questions
about the international schools here, while Kirsty Eccleston looks at what you need to
consider if you are contemplating the local schools option for your child, and Abbie Pumarejo finds out how parents can help their children transition to a new school and life.
Shanghai Family is the most trusted, relevant and well-read source of news and information for families in Shanghai. Visit our website www.shfamily.com to download our School
Directory and our Ultimate Answer Guide on how to make the most of Shanghai. You will
also find many useful articles covering topics from education, health and community to
shopping and things to do with your family.
I hope this guide provides you with a useful overview that
helps explain the school systems in Shanghai and supports
you in finding the best school to suit your childs needs.

Going Local
Over the last few years, more local schools have opened up international

their children to study in a more local setting. Kirsty Eccleston takes a look

Sagas story
While local schools may offer a better option for the early years or for students from Chinese
or bilingual backgrounds, older children of non-Chinese backgrounds can also benefit from
local schooling. Saga Ringmar, a 17-year-old Swedish-American, studied at Nanyang Model
High School () in Shanghai from 2011- 2013 and is now finishing high school in
Sweden. Here Saga shares her experience with us.
The main reason to go to a local school is for the language. Granted, I was beyond the beginner level, but before starting Nanmo I could barely have a conversation. After starting school, it
was like being born all over again. I was learning as fast as a newborn. In just two years, I could
make jokes and have conversations, and I became part of the crowd. My life WAS Chinese. My
best friends were Chinese, my social life was Chinese, and my schedule was Chinese. If you
want a deep level of integration, a local school is the only way you can live that kind of life. I
loved that life it became a part of my identity.

18

| Find more information at www.shfamily.com/education

There are definitely negatives in local school.

For example, nothing was easy. Language was
a struggle, and even after I made friends, I still
didnt feel 100% comfortable. Speaking became
easier, but my social life couldnt compare with
being in an English-speaking school. Schoolwork was tough, too. I had to assume the role of a
class idiot during my two years in Nanmo (even
though Im a top student in English-speaking
schools) because its impossible to compete at their pace when the language is so new.
I didnt graduate from Nanmo. This is important because theres no guarantee that the diploma from my new school will be enough for me to get into universities abroad. Forgetting the
bureaucratic aspect though, universities want students who have a good sense of their own
identity. I learned a lot about myself and how much Im able to cope beyond my comfort zone.
If you are considering a local school, your attitude is key. A local school can be life-changing
if youre determined to become Chinese and to change your views on education, language
and culture. I used to stand in the Metro after school at rush hour, crushed between a group
of school friends, laughing and joking in Chinese. It may sound silly, but this made me so immensely happy.

Glossary
ACT: A standardized test for high school achievement assessing student learning in five areas;
English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Writing. An alternative to the more mainstream
SATs, it is also considered in college applications. (administered by ACT Inc.)
American Curriculum: In Secondary school, a couple of elective courses are taken alongside
several compulsory subjects such as English, Science and Math. In high school, generally all
courses count towards credit. The range and number of elective courses depend largely on
staff, resources and school ideology.
AP: Advanced Placement is an exam for senior secondary years run by a US-based College
Board, available to all students regardless of whether theyve studied the whole course or not.
With 34 courses to choose from, AP aims to emulate first year state college courses, enabling
students to learn the necessary skills needed to succeed in university.
British Curriculum: Follows the national curriculum of England where all learning materials
are produced in the UK. Exams are marked according to a standardised set of criteria.
CIS: T he Council of International Schools awards schools that ensure high educational
standards and a focus on infusing an international and intercultural perspective into their
programs. It takes 1-2 years of self-assessment before schools can be accredited.
CITA: The Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation is a US-run agency
that enforces internationally recognised high educational standards in its schools.
EFL/ESL: Most schools offer assistance for students learning English as a Foreign Language or
English as a Second Language, with half or full-day programs and 1-2-1 tutoring.
High Scope Curriculum: Emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning in early childhood
education. Eight content areas provide its Key Developmental Indicators.
IB (PYP) (MYP) (DP): The International Baccalaureate program runs from ages 3 to 19 with the
Primary Years Program, Middle Years Program and Diploma Program. The aim of the IB is
to engage students in discussion and independent projects which involve critical thinking,
problem solving, and research and writing skills. The DP requires students to study 6 courses,
Theory of Knowledge (philosophy) and to write a 4000 word extended essay. The IB DP is accepted in college applications worldwide.
IGCSE: The International General Certificate of Secondary Education, offered at schools following the British curriculum, is taken between the ages of 14 and 16. Students are required to
study core topics along with a select number of over 70 optional topics. Typically, qualified
students move on to study the AP or IB program.
IPC: The International Primary Curriculum aims to instill in children a desire to learn by focussing on three aspects of subject matter; knowledge, skill, and understanding. Each of these
is assessed separately by teachers supported by the IPC Assessment For Learning program .
