areas over 2 or 3 feet deep
and keep rooted weeds from
getting started along the
bottom.”
Because fertilizing pro-
motes algae growth, it also
builds the food chain and
enables the pond to support
more fish, he noted.
An option is to use non-
toxic chemical dyes to shade
the pond bottom. The dyes
do not promote green algae
growth as does a fertiliza-
tion program, however. So
the treatment will promote
higher fish populations.
There are mechanical
methods to control rooted
vegetation, but they all re-
quire considerable indus-
triousness on the part of
the pond owner, Masser
said. Weeds can be pulled
or grubbed by hand or hoe.
Some suppliers of mechani-
cal cutters use a sickle wire
or blade to shred the weeds.

home have peeling paint? It
seems cosmetic, but paint is
a first line of defense against
the weathering and aging of
wood. You should also know
that it’s less expensive, less

Brick, stucco and siding
should be inspected as well.
■ Depending on the level
of traffic, hardwood floors
should be refinished every
five to 10 years. If they get
too worn down, you’re risk-
ing permanent damage to

leaks in any room that has
lavatories, commodes, show-
ers or any other water-based
amenity – remember to feel
around under sinks for
dampness.
■ In some older homes,
cast iron was used for the
wastewater lines. These
pipes eventually corrode
and leak. If the seepage is
under the foundation, you’ll
probably never notice, but
it may be worth it to have a

Auto registrations dip sharply

registrations followed na-
tional trends in May, down
sharply from May of 2007.
Decatur’s three dealerships
registered 224 new cars and
trucks in May, down 139
units from May last year.
The sharpest decline was
in truck and sport utility
vehicle sales while new car
sales were up. Concerns
about fuel prices apparently
kept customers out of the
showrooms.
In Wise County, Dodge
posted a significant increase
in new car sales, thanks to
the new Dodge Journey and
Caliber “crossover” utility
vehicles. It was also a good
month for the GMC Acadia,
Chevrolet Malibu and Co-
balt and the Ford Focus

Schneider retires from WRHS On-Duty

But they all pointed out
that beneath his gruff ex-
terior beats a heart of gold.
They praised his generous
nature and his willingness
to work for the good of the

Richard Schneider, the
former army supply ser-
geant, closed his career Fri-
day at Wise Regional Health
System as the hospital’s vice
president for facilities ser-
vices. Well wishers packed
the hospital cafeteria to
honor the man who had
left a lasting impression on
their lives.

The city of Decatur issued 63 build-
ing permits in April for jobs valued at
$1,331,623.
The city staff made 299 inspections
during the month.
Three permits for new homes were
issued to Bailee Custom Homes and
Dan Proctor Custom Homes.
The 4,734 square foot Proctor home
is in Hidden Springs and has a value
of $307,710. The Bailee homes are in
Briar Crossing. The 4,426 square foot

are more likely to give birth to children with a more easygoing
temperament. The study of more than 18,000 children revealed that
children born to pregnant women who stopped smoking were less likely
to display unpredictable behavior or to be stressed by new situations
than children born to smokers. The study showed that children born to
smokers were most likely to have the lowest scores for positive mood
among all the children studied. This study shows that pregnant women
who smoke not only exposed their unborn babies to chemicals that could
affect their development, but may also pass on traits and behaviors that
are associated with their smoking.
