Ceremonial groundbreaking
held for senior facility
With construction well un-
derway in the background, a
ceremonial groundbreaking
was held Wednesday for the
124-bed Senior Care Health
and Rehabilitation Center in
Decatur.
The 43,000 square foot fa-
cility is located on Bennett
Road off FM 51 S, just south
of Wise Regional Health
System. It is targeted for
completion by the end of the
year.
“This is a great day,” said
Don Miller, Senior Care Con-
sultants president. “Decatur
is exactly the type of commu-
nity we want to be a part of.
We plan to hire local people
which will mean neighbors
taking care of neighbors.”
DECATUR
When Miller first an-
nounced the project more
than a year ago, he said the
facility expects to hire 140
full-time employees with an
annual payroll of $3.6 mil-
lion.
The groundbreaking was
hosted by the Decatur Eco-
nomic Development Corp.
and the Decatur Chamber of
Commerce. EDC board mem-
ber Roy Eaton was master of
ceremonies and noted the
“beautiful” location of the
facility.
“I think this is going to be
a dandy,” said Eaton.
Mayor Joe Lambert agreed
with Eaton about the loca-
tion.
“This is a wonderful spot to
build,” said Lambert, adding
“We’ve been looking forward
to this for two years now.”
State Rep. Phil King high-
lighted the growth in the
North Texas area and in
Wise and Parker counties
particularly.
“The growth is exciting
but it still feels like Deca-
tur,” said King. “Decatur is
one of the few communities
that is always going to be a
destination.”
Eaton praised King for his
help in trying to locate a per-

ford College in Wise Coun-
ty, between Decatur and
Bridgeport, pointing to the
partnership between Parker
and Wise counties.

Howard has family ties
with her new business

Melissa Howard has an
appreciation for history, es-
pecially the history of the
building on the west side of
the Decatur square where
her business is housed.
But she didn’t know until
recently that she is a part
of that history.
Howard is the new owner
of Floors & More, purchas-
ing the business from Jerry
and Pam Stanfield. She and
her staff are hosting a grand
opening of the store on May
9 with door prizes and re-
freshments. Discounts on
flooring will be offered.
In a history of the square
published by Decatur Main
Street, the Floors & More
building is known as the
Bellah Building. A.E. Al-
len purchased the lot in
1860 and it became part
of Howell & Allen General
Store. After a fire in 1917,
Sam Bellah constructed a
building and moved his dry
goods store there. He sold
the business in 1920 to J.J.
Rieger. Rieger transferred
his business to the site in
1937. Rieger Dry Goods op-
erated there until 1965.
When Howard’s aunt was
visiting recently, she re-
called that her grandpar-
ents ran a store on the west
side of the square.
“My mom and I checked.
My great-grandmother was
born Dec. 28, 1902, and J. J.
Rieger signed her birth cer-
tificate,” said Howard.
On the birth certificate
is Rieger’s signature below
“witness to the birth of Opal
Madge Garner.”
Newspaper ads at the
time for Rieger’s Dry Goods
said, “G.W. Garner says

“I’m tied to this building,”
said Howard.
The original tin ceiling
in the store is still in mint
condition. The large display
windows on either side of
the entry are typical for
the era when the store was
built. Another nostalgic fea-
ture is the mirrored column
outside the front door.
The Main Street history
noted the column “has pro-
vided the passing citizenry
with a quick glance at their
appearance.”
With so much history sur-
rounding her, Howard is
ready to make a little his-
tory of her own.
“I’ve been decorating for
20 years for family and
friends and have dreamed
of owning my own store,”

Small boats big on fun FISH DAY!

When paddling small
steams or backwaters, I am
often reminded of the words
of Thoreau in his famous
novel “A Week on the Con-
cord and Merrimac Rivers,”
“We seemed to be embarked
on the placid current of our
dreams.”
There truly is something
special about floating or pad-
dling down a slow moving
stream or tranquil stretch of
shoreline of a lake or pond. I
am continually amazed at the
sights and sounds encoun-
tered when I penetrate an
unpopulated stretch of coun-
try via the horsepower I sup-
ply to the paddles. Rounding
that first bend of a stream or
river on a float trip of several
miles is the height of adven-
ture; it’s a trip into the un-
known, an experience that’s
getting more difficult to find
these days.

float trip on the Sabine River
in east Texas several years

East Texas backcountry. Our
boat was heavy and much
better suited to use on a lake
but thanks to a good current
and plenty of water depth, we
were able to keep the boat
afloat and moving the entire
trip, except for short breaks
along the sandbars where we
stopped for lunch and to do a
little fishing. Along the way,
we saw feral goats, hogs, deer
and even a few fellows fish-
ing off the bank that gave us
flashbacks to the movie “De-
liverance!” This trip served to
get me ‘hooked’ to the sights
and sounds encountered
while floating remote streams
and rivers.
Since that day close to a
quarter-century ago, I’ve en-

Our plan would have worked
perfectly if the ancient little
engine had started; it didn’t!
After 30 minutes of jerking
the pull rope, cleaning the
spark plug, priming the car-
buretor and possibly uttering
a few words we shouldn’t, we
gave up on the idea of going
upstream.
Our option was to float
about 24 miles downstream
some very secluded backwa-
ters created by several gravel
pits that, when water levels
are at or above normal, allow
me to paddle my Nucanoe.
The Nucanoe is a very stable
craft that is a cross between
a kayak and canoe, from one
of the ponds to the next. This
little 12-foot craft is unsink-
able and comfortably allows
me and one passenger access
to some prime fishing waters
that would be impossible to
reach with larger, heavier
boats. It also serves as the
access to those remote back-
water areas during duck sea-
son.
Boats such as my Nuca-
noe, kayaks and canoes have
become more popular today
than ever. I think many of
us simply wish to enjoy our
time outdoors as a time to re-
lax and unwind from the fast
paced lifestyles that have be-
come part of living in today’s
world.
Please don’t conceive my
love of small boats to be a
bash on bigger craft. Few
joy the luxury of fishing with
a guide in a big, roomy boat
with an engine that cranks
out more horsepower than
my wife’s car. This has be-
come a big part of what I do
as an outdoors writer, and
I enjoy every minute of my
time in these big luxurious
fishing boats.
But, I also enjoy sliding my

Recognizing when it’s time for a new job

ASSOCIATION
Many people find their
jobs get better, more chal-
lenging and more interest-
ing every day. Such people
look forward to going to
work each morning, and
leave at night feeling satis-
fied at what they’ve accom-
plished.
But many people find
themselves in work situa-
tions that don’t bring such
satisfaction. It’s often not
the kind of work, or the job
title, but rather work-relat-
ed stress that’s causing the
problem.
It’s a condition called job
burnout and it’s fairly com-
mon. Work leaves you feel-
ing frustrated and stressed
out. Your job seems to offer
no hope or future, you feel
trapped, and most workdays
leave you feeling discour-
aged, fatigued and drained.
It’s a condition that af-
fects your entire life, not
just your job performance.
And because it can cause
serious problems, it needs
to be recognized and dealt
with early. Some signs of job
burnout to look for include:
■ Work activities that
once seemed challenging
now seem common drudg-
ery.
■ Co-workers, bosses or
the overall company make
you feel bitter or easily an-
noyed.
■ Your job seems more
boring every day.
■ You care less about do-
ing a good job.
■ You dread going to work
and find Sundays depress-
ing because the next day
means work.
■ You lack energy at work
and get easily tired.
■ Your feelings about
work are starting to affect
parts of your life, like your
marriage and relation-
ships with your children or
friends.
While recognizing the
signs of job burnout is an
important step, it still can
be hard to deal with the
problem. Anything from
your age, to your educa-
tion and work background,
to the current state of the
economy, can all make even
considering new employ-
ment very challenging.
However, a new job isn’t
always the answer. Some-
times simply identifying
the causes of your prob-
lems can offer solutions.
Maybe it means talking to
a supervisor, or taking on
new responsibilities. Job
burnout doesn’t necessarily
mean changing careers, but
it does require identifying
what has caused your cur-
rent burnout.
A good way to approach
the problem is to talk with
a career counselor. They
specialize in helping peo-
ple gain control over their
working lives, as well as in
helping identify interests
and skills related to work
and career planning. You
can find career counselors
listed in your local yellow
pages, or go to the National
Career Development Asso-
ciation’s Web site at www.
ncda.org. Don’t ignore job
burnout until it’s a serious
problem.
