Cheshire Residents Make Quilts For Kids

By Chelsea Opong-Wadeer
ome may remember when their
grandmother would have quilts that
carried long-term memories in each
patch, or some may remember the very first
time they received a quilt that brought them
joy and comfort. Cheshire Home in
Florham Park is working to give that feeling
of joy and comfort to children around the
world through the Quilts for Kids organization.
Cheshire Home, established in Oct.
1981, has helped to shape and motivate
young adults with life-long disabilities such
as spina bifida and cerebral palsy for the
past 34 years. Madelyn Cerrato, Cheshires
director of Nursing and Ann Savered, registered nurse at Cheshire and Director of
Minimum Data Set, brought the Quilts for
Kids program to Cheshire after attending
the NJ Hospital Association Conference.
By coincidence, Cerrato and Savered
happened to be sitting at the same table of
Linda Ayre, who founded the program 14
years ago after discovering tons of discontinued fabrics that were going to be thrown
away. The program has now turned into a
huge success and Cheshire is very excited
to be apart of this outreach.
I think it was very exciting for our
group, because we had never heard of this
before, said Barbara Monahan, director of
development at Cheshire Home.
We all were smiling at the thought, she

said, that we could do this at Cheshire

home and make a difference in childrens
lives.
Cheshire received its first kit soon after
hearing about the idea and got to sewing.
With each quilt made a kit comes with all
the supplies needed to make it. The quilts
are made of 100 percent cotton, and each kit
comes with all the required quilting pieces,
and a how to manual on how to sew different pieces for each quilt.
According to Monahan, Cheshire has
successfully created one quilt. Residents
Liana Kraenzlin and Alice Papa participated
in the first trail of the quilt making at
Cheshire. The first quilt had three different
colors, Monahan described, blues, reds, yellows, and greens. We wanted our first quilt
to radiate happiness, she said.
Cheshire plans to purchase two more kits
once they do more research on quilt making
to make even better quilts in the future.
The time process really varies on the
persons ability, Monahan said. But we
hope to keep doing this as a recreation program at Cheshire, we just have more to
learn.
Cheshire hopes to learn more about the
size the stitches and learn about more
involved ways to build the quilts for the
future. The quilts are given to children
based on need and those with life-threatening diseases. Monahan shared that once a
quilt is made and sent out, one can track

where the quilt ends up through the quilts

for kids website.

Kids" program, visit quiltsforkids.com. A

A Summer Solution To Odors And Bug Bites

ummer brings sunshine and beach days, but also

musty, mildew odors and pesky biting insects.
Anyone who has ever opened a beach house or lake
cabin, a boat or even a storage space for summer equipment knows what that first whiff is like. Bet the smell is
there now.
And why should anyone have to live with unpleasant
odors, like animals such as a wet dog, kitty litterbox, ferret; cooking odors from things that are yummy to eat but
less so when lingering in the air: fish, broccoli, bacon,
clams; and the smells of everyday living: powder rooms,
diapers, sick rooms, shoe closets?
Destroy those odors and germs, safely. The Lampe
Berger fragrance system destroys odors safely and effectively. Its unique system of catalysis actually removes
odor moleculesnot just masking them. Created in 1898
to purify the air in French hospitals, it also remains the
foremost system available for killing airborne germsgreat inside during cold and flu season.
Lampe Berger is so much safer to use than a candle.

First light the burner and flame it for only two minutes.
Then blow it out. It continues to burn with no open
flame and no danger of fire or injury to pets and people.
Extinguish the catalytic burner with a solid snuffer cap.
Add fine fragrance to the air. Lampe Berger offers over
50 fragrances for their system. All are developed by fine
French perfumers, based on natural scents. Unlike most
candles, Lampe Berger alcohol-based fragrances are tested by independent labs for complete safety: no smoke and
no carcinogens like benzene, styrene, naphthalene,
formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
Beyond their unscented neutral, the scents can be
fresh- like rain, ocean, clean linen or citrus; relaxing like
lavender or green tea; and can evoke memories of childhood or happy times. There are fruit and baking scents,
heavenly holiday fragrances, woods and spices. Everyone
can find a favorite!
Enjoy the outdoors without bites with the newest innovation for outside. Summer Night combines their bestselling fragrance, Ocean Breeze, with a safe and powerful

insecticide to repel airborne insects. Burned for 30 minutes in the open air-porch, patio, dock, backyard- it repels
even mosquitos for about two hours, when it can then be
burned again.
Dick Lohmeyer, owner of The Golden Pineapple in
Morristown, calls the Lampe Berger system Nothing
short of a miracle. It is one of our best-selling product
lines. We love hearing the stories of all the customers who
love how Lampe Berger has made a difference in their

Heroes Recognized At Florham Park Library Summer Kickoff

By Kerry Breen
he Florham Park
library celebrated
the beginning of
their childrens summer
programs with its annual
kickoff. This years event
theme recognizes heroes, a
theme that will be repeated
in
various
programs
throughout the summer.
Our theme this year is
Every Hero Has a Story,
said Kate Dinneny, the
childrens librarian who
runs the event. We
thought why not highlight
local heroes?
The kickoff is an annual
part of the summer reading
program, and is used as a
way to draw attention to
the program. The celebration usually garners a
response of about 70 to 80
people. This year they are
expecting roughly the same

amount, although Dinneny

said that we are always
hoping for more. She also
explained that she knows
many of the people who
attend the kickoffs, because
they are regulars at the
library.
This is the first time the
kickoff has been held in

this style. Dinneny explains

that typically they have a
performer attend instead,
but due to the hero aspect
of the summer programs,
she thought the attendance
of local heroes would be
more in tune with the
theme.
Present at the event

Think Summer!

were several local heroes,

mainly firemen and EMTs.
Two ambulances and one
fire truck were also there,
and children could tour the
vehicles if they wanted to.
Other activities were
also available during the
two-hour event. Volunteers,
mostly local teens, helped
organize activities such as
face-painting, temporary
tattoos, hula-hooping, playing with bubbles, and other
kids games. Prizes were
available for those who
won.
The kickoff served as a
sign that summer programs
were beginning at the
library. A variety of events
will be happening throughout
the
summer.
Registration for those programs was also available
during the event. Many of
these programs will contin-

ue to follow the theme of

heroes.
One such program is
The Art of the Hero, a
weekly event that takes
place on Mondays at 3:30
p.m. Of the five sessions,
registered children must be
able to attend at least three.
It is open to children in
grades second through
fifth. During the session,
they will have the chance
to make the logo of their
favorite superhero in the
style of famous artists such
as Monet and Picasso.
A
program
called
Super Builders will supply Legos for students in
grades
kindergarten
through fifth, so that they
can use their imaginations
to build whatever they
desire. Dates for this program are June 24, July 1,
July 8, July 15, and July 22.

All programs start at 7 p.m.

The library will also
show superhero themed
movies on Friday afternoons. The movies for the
summer
are
The
Incredibles, June 26; Big
Hero Six, July 17; Bolt,
July 29; and Megamind,
Aug. 7. All movies begin
promptly at 2 p.m.
These programs, along
with several others, will be
available at the library
throughout the summer.
For more information,
check the childrens events
page on the Florham Park
library website. To sign up,
go to the online events calendar,
contact
Kate
Dinneny at Kate.Dinneny
@florhampark.org, or call
the library at 973-3772694. Registration is
required for all events.

Check Out Quick And Easy Check Cashing

In East Hanover

By Cheryl Conway
ashing a check just got easier with a
new cash checking store that recently opened in East Hanover.
Cash Centers of New Jersey on Route 10
in East Hanover opened in January, and is
one of nine locations in Morris and Essex
counties. Licensed by the department of
banking, Cash Centers of NJ does not hold
any money or accounts like other banks.
Whether for business or personal use,
customers can cash their check without having a bank account.
Some people dont carry balances in
accounts so they have to wait to cash a
check, says Tommy Wilson, company president. Its a great tool for cash flow for
companies. We are allowed to cash third
party checks.
For a small fee, customers can cash a
check without waiting for funds to clear and
without a minimum balance in an account.
You dont have to wait for your check to
clear; you can get cash right away, he says.
We are trying to make it convenient for
people.

Fully Insured
Free Estimates

Customers can get their funds immediately. Just endorse the check, show an ID
and the money is yours, as stated on the
website. Its as easy as that. There are no
holds, no delays, and no red tape, just fast
and friendly service with a smile!
At Cash Centers of NJ, customers pay a
two percent fee for check cashing.
We offer the lowest rates in the business
and cash all types of checks, no matter how
large or small including payroll checks, tax
returns, settlement checks, social security
checks, unemployment checks, personal
checks, government checks, insurance settlement checks, cashiers checks, company
checks and money orders.
In addition to check cashing, money
orders are sold as well as wire transfers and
debit cards for a separate fee.
Instead of carrying cash, individuals can
purchase a pre-loaded Visa debit card for a
designated amount.
Wilson opened his first check-cashing
store 18 years ago in Montclair. Other stores
opened up in Parsippany, West Orange,
Orange, Bloomfield and other areas. Each of

his stores also features an added business in

the lobby like designer fragrances, lottery
machines, and even a NJ licensed pawn broker service at the East Hanover store.
Besides the convenience of cashing
checks, customers will experience great
customer service and friendliness by com-

pany workers.
We build a personal relationship and
rapport with the people, says Wilson.
Hours for the East Hanover store are
Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sat., 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m. For more information, go to cashcentersofnj.com or call 973-599-9400.

Welcome Home An Exchange

Student This Fall

elcome home a child from

another country this coming
school semester or year and
make a global connection through Host
an AFS Exchange Student. Each year,
AFS Intercultural Programs/USA, a leading international non-profit high school
student exchange for more than 60 years,
welcomes 2,500 high school students
from more than 90 countries into communities like Morristown. These students
are eager to attend a local high school,
live with a host family and discover what
America is all about.
AFS-USA is always looking for supportive host families. By hosting an AFS
Exchange student, families will help
build bridges of intercultural understanding at home and abroad while connecting
with an outstanding young person.
Area resident and AFS volunteer, Sue
Fershing, whose family hosted more than
a dozen exchange students through AFS

Roofing

since 1986, said "This is the most

rewarding thing we've ever done. We
love staying in touch with our AFSers,
who come back to visit us years later. It's
not the end, it's the beginning of a lifelong relationship.
Host families provide a bed and meals,
share their daily lives with students, and
help guide and support students as they
would their own children. Students come
with full medical insurance and personal
spending money. Families and their hosted students receive ongoing support from
AFS staff and experienced, local volunteers.
For more information about how to host
a student, study abroad, or volunteer with

Vista Parking Unlocks The Key To Secure,

Convenient Parking

By Cheryl Conway
oing on a trip, whether business or pleasure,
can be stressful especially if it involves driving
to the airport, deciding where to park in crowded lots, remembering where the car is parked, getting
the luggage out of the vehicle and then finding the
means to get to the gate in time for a flight.
A lot of these concerns can be avoided for those drivers who choose Vista Parking for their off-site parking
destination. Located directly across Newark Liberty
International Airport, customers can park their car valet
style in a secure 24-hour access lot before they even get
to the busy airport and then receive car-door to airportdoor service any time of day without any wait.
Family operated and owned since 1988, Vista
Parking has been providing the most convenient means
of off-site parking for travelers who use Newark
Airport.
The service at Vista Parking is much more convenient than long-term because its a door to door service,
says the company president. Customers are immediately greeted by a van; theres no waiting for shuttles, not

waiting every 15 minutes. We take you on demand; you

come in, we are ready to go. Unlike other lots, They
are not walking through long dark parking lots in snow
or far away.
What used to be four or five lots at Newark Airport
has grown, but at Vista Parking customers can park
before they get to the airport.
We are right there, says the owner. We are located
right when you come off 78; right at the end of the exit,
right at exit 58B; or exit 14 off of the NJ Turnpike
located at the Howard Johnsons Hotel in Newark.
At Vista Parking, award winning service is provided; cars are kept in a safe and secure lot; and service is
available 24 hours a day.
Customers get free shuttle service to the airport, just
a three minute ride. We drop you off right at the terminal and pick you up right at the terminal. Also offered
are corporate rates, fast check out, all valet parking, frequent parker rewards club, luggage assistance and security.
All size vehicles are welcome and there is no minimum to days parked.

We are very customer service friendly, he said.

Once you pull in you dont have to pull your bags. We
clean off your car when it snows. Theres nothing worse
than coming home from the Bahamas and theres two
feet of snow on your car. We make it so simple for you.
It starts and finishes so nice. This is valet; the car is
brought up to you, warmed up on a cool night.
According to the website, At Vista Parking, you
wont have to worry about navigating massive parking
garages or where you parked your car. All you have to
do is call the number on your claim ticket and one of our
shuttles will be dispatched to meet you at the arrival terminal and return you to your vehicle.
At random parking lots, cars can be stolen, misplaced, sometimes people forget where they parked their
car or what row they are in. If you have a problem with
your car when you get back, it just brings aggravation.
Cost to park at Vista Parking is reasonably priced at
$48 a day for short term parking; and $13 to $14 a day
for long-term parking. For more information, go to
www.vistaparking.com or call 973-263-2009 or 973 465
9400.

Upcoming Annual Golf Event Supports Kids With Cancer

By Cheryl Conway
ineteen years ago, at the age of six,
Carlos Raymond Saavedra of
Wayne was diagnosed with cancer
and told he would have less than four
months to live.
When he was sent to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. to
undergo experimental treatment, along with
seven other children, he beat the odds and
was the lone survivor.
To honor Carlos and his survival against
medulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor found
in the brain stem, his family set up a foundation- The Carlos Raymond Saavedra
Foundation (C.R.S.)- in his name to support
St. Judes, cancer victims and their families.
The foundations annual golf outing
fundraiser raises thousands of dollars for this
cause.
The Fifth Annual Carlos Raymond
Saavedra Foundation Golf Outing is set for
Wed., Sept. 23, at the Preakness Valley Golf
Course in Wayne. Shot gun start is at 9:30
a.m.; dinner, drinks and silent auction will
continue at 5 p.m. at the Carriage House.
Prizes will be awarded in different areas
like the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Cost is $150 per person, includes dinner;

$85 without dinner; and $75 dinner only.
Golf cart included. With 80 golfers last year,
golf outing organizers are hoping to attract
100 golfers this year.
The event is open to the public for both
men and women. Everyones invited; its a
good fun day, says Denise Caposella, original foundation founder and president.
Caposella and her husband, Michael,
who chairs the golf event, started the foundation to honor their nephew, Carlos.
It was Oct. 11, 1996, when Carlos was
diagnosed with cancer and underwent several surgeries.
After a 15 hour brain surgery procedure, the family was told he was bleeding to
death. So the doctors stopped the surgery
and closed him up. While everyone was devastated with the news, God gave Carlos
Raymond a miracle and the bleeding miraculously stopped.
Carlos went to St. Judes Childrens
Research Hospital to undergo an experimental protocol with seven other children, who
all died but him, explains Caposella.
Carlos was left almost completely deaf
with some learning disabilities. His parents,

Pictured, from left, is Michael Caposella, Carlos Raymond Saavedra, and Carlos Saavedra Sr.

Linda and Carlos Sr., struggled to pay for all

the costs and relied heavily on donations.
We started it in his honor to pay it forward because he was so fortunate, says
Caposella. The foundation pays St. Judes to
help other families pay for children battling
cancer, siblings activities and extra costs
such as gas, food, hotel.

Last year, for the first time, the foundation sent some kids to a summer camp in
Long Island- Motivational Recovery
Environment- for kids with cancer and their
siblings. Caposella hopes to send more kids
again this summer to that camp, where
Carlos was a camp counselor last year.

Annual Golf Event...

continued from previous page
Since the foundation was established,
C.R.S. has donated $23,000 so far, with
$11,000 to St. Judes; and the remaining
helping nine families in the U.S. and to the
campers.
Carlos, the honorary chair of the foundation, is thrilled to have the foundation. It
gives him a sense of purpose; it gives him a
good sense of being; he likes to pay it forward, says Caposella.
Carlos started his own online hat company last year with his two younger sisters,
Larraine and Natalia. The cancer treatments
have left him bald and sensitive to others
who do not have hair. For every hat that is
purchased, another hat is donated to a child

with cancer. Called Halo Hats, all kinds of

hats are sold such as ski caps, golf hats, sun
hats. He also provides the hats for each
golfer at the C.R.S. Golf Outing and even
passed out hats to patients at St. Judes.
A small foundation, the C.R.S. Golf
Outing is the only fundraiser held. Golf was
the chosen event as Michael Caposella volunteers on the Paterson Fire Dept., and figures since most firemen like to golf he
knew he could get firemen to go, says
Caposella.
With such a good time had every year,
they say Im bringing back a four-some
next year, says Caposella. We started it
with 50 golfers; it has grown.

College Of Saint Elizabeth Receives

LUI & SONS
GENERAL CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPING
$2.3 Million Bequest

he College of Saint Elizabeth has

received one of its largest bequests
ever- $2.3 million from the estate
of Joseph Scavuzzo of Short Hills. The
funds will provide student scholarships in
the memory of Scavuzzos late wife,
Katherine J. Hill. It was Hills friendship
with a CSE alumna, Marian Kerwin
Koegel, 40, that prompted the bequest.
We are very thankful to Joseph
Scavuzzo and Katherine Hill for their
generosity, said CSE President Helen J.
Streubert. It reminds us, as an institution, how deeply our influence is on the
individuals and communities that we
serve. We will use these funds, as designated by her late husband Joseph, to
honor Katherine and her commitment to
nutrition and passion for the arts.
Katherine Hill and Marian Kerwin
Koegel met when working at Prudential
Insurance in Newark, both specializing in
dietetics. Hill mentored Koegel in her
position as associate manager/head dieti-

tian overseeing the establishment of food

services in regional Prudential offices.
Hill, who died in 2007, and Koegel, who
died in 2011, maintained a lifetime
friendship.
Hill graduated from Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn as a dietitian and managed
Maries Tea Room in East Orange, owned
her own catering business, then joined
Prudential working there from 19371977. She was also a cellist in the East
Orange High School Orchestra and a
member of the Plainfield Symphony
Orchestra. She retired from Prudential in
1977 and was an active volaunteer with
New Eyes for the Needy and the Millburn
Public Library.
Scavuzzo died in 2013. He was an
architect who worked during his long
career for Prudential Insurance, ConEdison and Honeywell. Born in Newark,
he was one of eight children and at the
time of his death was survived by his
brothers, Philip and Peter Scavuzzo.
