Malstroms EOD team

visits Pioneer Museum

Malstrom Air Force Base

personnel were in Glasgow Monday
to make a special visit to the Valley
County Pioneer Museum. Not for a
tour of the facility, but to evaluate
some old military shells that have
been on display for years.
It all began when Tim Romo,
a National Guardsman, toured the
museum, looked at the shells and
brought it up to his mother, Shelly
Romo, whether these shells had
ever been examined to determine
whether they were live or not.
After much discussion by
Pioneer Museum staff, nobody
could even pin a date on just how
long these shells had been there, let
alone whether they had ever been
deemed inert.
For safetys sake, Dave Pippin
immediately went to work on finding
someone who could examine the
rounds to determine if they were still
explosive. After several phone calls, he
found out the only place in Montana
that has trained professionals to do
this is at Malstrom Air Force Base.
Malstrom sent two explosive
ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians
who are specially trained to deal
with the construction, deployment,
disarmament, and disposal of high
explosive munitions.
Upon their arrival, the officers

equipment inside to begin their
evaluation of the military rounds,

one of them being a five-inch shell

a pair of 25 millimeter anti-aircraft
artillery shells.

First step in their
evaluation was to do exrays, but after that we
have no clue as to what
the following procedures
were because we were all
evacuated! (And besides
that, no photos are
allowed to exactly what
their procedures are.)

What they discovered
was very interesting:
The two 25 mm
artillery shells were highly
suspected to be live ammo
and were going to be taken
back to Malstrom to be
detonated (Kaboom, no
more 25 mm shells to view
at Pioneer Museum), but
were then determined to
be safe at around 9:00 this
morning.

Yeah, the story keeps
getting better all the time,
Dave said, explaining
that it turns out these are

Some nasty storms last night

Hinsdale got hammered by hail and heavy rains

and up north it was no picnic as the storm that wreaked
havoc in Hinsdale headed northwest. Darryl Fuhrman
reported that while Opheim didnt get hail, they did
get 2 1/4 inches of rain and still pouring at 10:00 this
morning. Glentana had golf-ball-sized hail while Pete
Dighans lost all the windows on the west side of his
house. Richland had 2 3/4 inches and still a-coming.
Peas were flattened and the pastures look like
someone took a lawnmower to them, Daryl said.

The detective conducting the interview looked at the
three of them and said, So yall want to be cops, huh?
The blondes all nodded.
The detective got up, opened a file drawer, and pulled

Sitting back down, he opened it, pulled out a picture,
