WHO ARE WE?

Global Missionary Ministries has its historical

roots with the Toronto-based TCM mission of the

1950's and was established as a separate organiza

tion in 1976. Today it is an independent Christian
mission incorporated as a charitable organization
both in Canada and the USA. Its primary activities
take place in Central and Eastern Europe (particular
ly in the countries of Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and
Lithuania). The reason for our existence is to "pre
sent the unchanging message of Christ to a changing
world."

In the early days of our history, when communism

maintained a strong grip on Central and Eastern
Europe, radio was our main tool for evangelistic out
reach. It was during this time that John K. Huk
(1907-1987), a Belarusian-born preacher, pioneered
this work. Later it was continued with the assistance

We also involve ourselves in a Christian litera

ture ministry. This includes translating, printing and

distributing literature in the Russian, Belarusian,
Ukrainian and Polish languages.
Working in close association with local believers,
we carry on evangelistic ministries that include
preaching and teaching, starting new churches, orga
nizing Christian concerts, conducting Bible seminars,
assisting in benevolent outreach to needy people,
developing ministries for the disabled and assisting in
a new Messianic work \r\ Warsaw.
All of these involvements have caused us to modi

fy our mission's name to Global Missionary

Ministries. Presently there are 3 full-time missionary
staff working from our Mississauga, Ontario, office
and more than ten national coworkers in Europe with
whom we maintain a regular working relationship.

of Charles Branum, George Repetski, George

Bajenski and several other dedicated Christian men

and women. With great eagerness they strove to

take Christ's Gospel to all who were deprived the
privilege of hearing it. During this period we were
known as Global Missionary Radio Ministries.
Following the collapse of communism in the late
1980's we established closer working ties with the
believers who lived in this part of the world. In part
nership with them, we were able to teach and assist
in developing different approaches to Christian min
istries. Thus, a cassette ministry was added to
GMM's radio ministry. For program preparation we
began using local believers and we started broad
casting over local stations. In Poland we assisted in
establishing a private radio station from which we

have unlimited access to broadcast Christian pro

grams.

Another important aspect to our outreach in

Europe is the camp ministry. Working with local

believers, we organize camps for children, young

people and students, and Bible conferences for

adults. Thanks to an existing camp facility in the city

of Ostroda, every year over 1,000 different campers
are being reached with the Gospel. Recently, we
have extended a similar outreach to children and

young people of neighboring countries such as

Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania. Also, for the first time
GMM initiated a very successful camp for Jewish
children from Eastern Europe.

of students from the teacher's college. One girl in this
group saw how our children were repenting and
asked herself the question: why do they have to
repent? Are they so sinful? This question did not give
her any peace. So she started attending services,

"Remember Your Creator"

previous seasons we have seen thousands

of children and young people come to our
camps and different youth meetings.
Hundreds of them committed their lives to

In the past all forms of organized church

work with children and young people In
communist countries was not permitted. So
when new freedoms arrived, we were chal

lenged by many requests from our partners

in Central and East Europe. We welcomed
these greater opportunities for work among
young people In the post-communist world,
for we firmly believe that the Bible has
something to offer for all of our human
needs. A wise man in the Bible, King
Solomon, stated: "Remember your Creator
In the days of your youth before the days of
trouble come" (Ecc. 12;1).
But how can they remember or know

the Lord. It must have been pleasing to God

to hear their sincere prayers and listen to
their harmonious singing: "O Lord, our God,
how majestic Is Your name in all the earth.
You have set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants You
have ordained praise" (Ps. 8:1-2).
With this in mind we have planned
another full schedule of summer activities.

Our partners have been diligently working

to lay the groundwork, and now it is our turn
to respond to their needs. However, we can
see that we will need much help to keep up

Him unless we will tell them? There are

thousands of parents whom we know that

are living in that part of the world who do
not know God because, when they were
young, they lived in an atheistic state where
God and religion had no official part. Now,
however, they want their children to have a
better life and future. They like to send
them to Sunday school, vacation Bible
school or camp. But where? This is a little

with our commitments. During the months

of June, July and August we will need an
additional $15,000 to keep our summer
youth ministry in Central and Eastern
Europe in operation.

often times a shortage of teachers. We do
not want this to happen in any place where
GMM is Involved. We want to accept and
teach the "Way of the Lord" to all children
who might be within our reach.
We believe the teaching of the Bible is
true, namely, that we need to "train a child
in the way he should go, and when he is

dren. This is possible because of the dili

gent work of our Polish partner, Kazik

Immediately after this we will have two

weeks of junior camp for Polish children.
This camp Is usually overflowing with chil
dren. Our prayer is that God will provide us
with effective teachers, parents and staff
members who will attend to all the physical
and spiritual needs of these children.
Following this group there will be two
weeks of junior-high camp. This will include
mostly Polish girls and boys. However, we
have already been asked whether a
Belarusian group of young people can
come. We are willing to accept them but we
know that finances will determine their

coming. In other words, GMM will have to

pay their traveling and living expenses at
the Ostroda Camp. This camp will provide
an additional attraction in that a group of
American students will come and teach

them to play baseball.

Then we will have three weeks of camp
for high school and college youth. These
camps are known for their Bible teaching
and basketball. These are usually very
active and challenging weeks of camp.
During this camp there will be plenty of food
both for body and soul. To make it even
more interesting there will be professional
help from American youth including a bas
ketball coach from Kentucky's Louisville
Southeast Christian Church. We would ask

you to pray for the young people as they

play and as they pray, so that they will be
alert and many of them will open their
hearts to the Lord.

There are also plans for a Singles'

camp, a family camp, even a "Golden Age"
camp for campers in their fifties. During the
last week of August the Annual Church
Conference will be facilitated at Ostroda

Camp Christian.
In addition to all of our programs in
Ostroda, we are also committed to assist in

similar camp activities and vacation Bible

school programs in cities such as: Lutsk,
Ukraine; Kobryn, Belarus; and in Solech-

niki, Lithuania. In these places we conduct

ed similar programs with our partners in the
past. Now local believers are continuing on
their own. However, they strongly depend
on our financial help and encouragement.
Thus, another full summer schedule is

before us. We would ask you, our friends

and partners, to remember us and this min
istry in your prayers. Somebody stated that
"the more prayer, the more power from on
high." Dear friends, we depend on these
prayers.

Traditionally it has been our experience

that during the summer months mission
giving is very low, but we would like to see
it not happen this summer. We are present
ing these needs to the Lord and pray that
He will answer. Knowing that God responds
to the need of the hour through his people,
we ask you to consider the possibility of
assisting us through prayers and financial
undergirding. You are the only channel of
blessings that we have in this ministry. We
would kindly ask you to send us your spe
cial contribution for this summer's children's

ministries. During the next three months, as

we have previously stated, we will need an
additional $15, 000. For the support of one
child at camp this year we need $10 per
day. Many local campers will pay their fees
in full, but we will have to supplement fees
for others who cannot afford to pay for
themselves. Still others, including those
coming from Eastern Europe, will have to
be fully financied by GMM.

The Gospel Continues to be Preached

Every time that I travel and minister in
the countries in which GMM works I come

away grateful to the Lord that, in spite of dif

ficulties that our people face, the Gospel
continues to be preached. This is visible in
various forms of ministry. I would like to tell
you about some of them, as I observed

that secular Jews are even coming out to a

enough for wonder. Following Friday's

Ministry to Jewish Communities

One example of this is an outreach min
istry to the Jewish community in Poland
and countries of the former Soviet Union. I

was present at two Shabbots that took

place in Warsaw. One was a special time as
Christian Jews from various parts of Poland
came together to celebrate. The Friday
evening meeting is the beginning of Shabbot. It is a time of gathering for a meal and
fellowship with Scripture reading and pray
ers. The Lord has used Kazik and Dorothy,
our coworkers, to begin this outreach to the
secular Jewish community in Warsaw.
Kazik's efforts have been noticed by the
leaders of Jewish organizations in Poland.
Some Jews from these organizations have
begun to attend and they hear the message
of Jesus being their Messiah. Already there

events: the 55th year since the Jewish

Ghetto Uprising in Warsaw against the
Nazis and the 50th year since the creation
of Israel as a state. Dignitaries from the
Jewish community in Warsaw and Israel
were present. The fact that non-Christian
Jews would come to a Christian gathering
in honour of events significant to the Jewish
people speaks of the impact that Kazik and
his coworkers are having. During June our
Ostroda Camp hosted a special camp for
Jewish children from

Poland,

Ukraine,

Belarus and Russia. Please continue to

The Gospel Through Music
My next stop was in Moscow, Russia.
Yevgeny is a young man that heads up a
Christian mission called Logos, which is
dedicated to spreading the Gospel mes
sage through the medium of music. We
have asked this mission to assist us in

reprinting John K. Huk's songbook, Hymns

of Victory. Our friends in Moscow have gra
ciously consented to do that. Already they
wrote some of the music score and words

on computer. The book will contain 300

pages and will Include songs that Brother
Huk translated into Russian during his life
time. There will also be some new songs
that today's Christians are singing in
Russia. It is hoped that the book will be out
by the end of this year.
I had the wonderful privilege of being
present at a church where Logos' choir and
orchestra presented an Easter cantata.
What an uplifting experience to hear the
Easter story being played and sung by
accomplished musicians. Logos mission
uses the medium of sacred concerts as a

tool of evangelism. People in Russia are

not generally coming in great numbers to
special evangelistic meetings, as before,
but they gladly come to hear a sacred con
cert by an accomplished choir and musi-

clans. This Is followed by an evangelistic

message.

Preaching in Churches in Belarus

The Lord gave me another opportunity
to preach in several churches throughout
Belarus. At this point I was joined by a
friend, John Rekart, a member of one of our

supporting congregations in Beaverton,

Oregon. Together we visited several con
gregations to obsen/e their ministries and
learn of their progress and needs. In two
congregations the Lord opened the door to
a children's ministry for next year. We laid
plans with the local leaders of the
"Jerusalem" Church in Minsk and "Bethany"
Church in Kobryn to have a team of chil
dren's workers come from America to help
out in conducting a Daily Vacation Bible
School. We look fonward to this venture

with great anticipation and will be doing

preparatory work for it.
The Gospel is being preached in many

places throughout Belarus. In talking with

some Christian leaders we learned that the

Orthodox Church receives preferential

treatment from the government of Belarus.
This makes it more difficult for all Protestant

groups. Nevertheless, in spite of such diffi

culties, churches continue to preach the
Youth choir in Moscow church

Gospel. There are new church buildings

the believers will be used of God to bring

their neighbours to the Lord.

Literature Ministry
I was able to meet with Brother Vladimir

Bethany Church expansion

K., a well known lay preacher in Minsk, who

in the past preached a series of instructive
messages on the 11th chapter of Hebrews,
the "faith chapter." He later compiled a book
from his sermons in the Russian language.
In view of the fact that there are very few
good evangelical Christian books in
Belarusian, we were given permission by

throughout the country. Some congrega

tions are putting up new buildings and do

the author to translate his work into

Belarusian. The translation has now been

not have the financial resources that we are

completed and we are now checking it

through for the final time. Some of the cor
rected final copy was left in Minsk, which
will eventually be part of the whole book.
We hope to print this book sometime next
year. This book will be call many people
who love and use the Belarusian language

used to. Yet, progress in construction con

tinues. Those church building projects that
were approved in the past are continuing.
On the other hand, it is becoming increas
ingly difficult for new congregations to reg
ister and seek out an appropriate place of
worship. In some places throughout the
country it is easier to evangelize than in
others. It all depends on local officials.
One congregation that GMM supports is
"Bethany" Church in Kobryn. Brother Vladi
mir gives leadership to this church. The be
lievers there have completed their first
building that will serve as a Christian edu
cation facility in the future, although at the
present time it serves as the main church
building. Right next to it the local believers
continue to build their "house of prayer"
(church edifice). John and I were present to
see how the bricklayers continue to lay one
brick on top of the other. The time is coming
when this building will be finished. More
importantly, with each passing year new
people are finding Christ in this church and
being baptized. Soon their present building
will prove inadequate to house all that will
be coming to the sen/ices. The church is
located on the southern side of the city
where there is a whole new area of private
homes and apartment buildings. Pray that

to consider their need to have true Biblical

faith and to follow the examples of the

heroes of the faith that are mentioned in

Hebrews chapter 11.

BE READY

In a previous issue of 'The Crier" we

shared with you that our Christian camp in
Poland was in urgent need of a dishwash

from the camp's administration and from us

from Scripture that it brought to my mind.
It was late in July. Ostr6da Camp was in

we had a large group of teenage campers.
The day started out as usual with music
and a friendly wake-up call over the loud
speaker system. Then it was quiet time,
devotions, breakfast and all morning activi

noticed several cars pulling up with unex

Friends, we all know quite well that Jesus

is returning some day. He is the rightful
owner of this universe. He created it all. In

Mark 13:34-37 He presents Himself as a

man taking a far journey, who left His house
and gave authority to His servants. To every
man He gave his particular work to do and
commanded the porter to watch: "Watch ye

In our "old" church hymnal one can find

the familiar Gospel song, "Give of Your Best

how beautiful when we can give Him the
prime days of our lives! This is why GMM

cultural groups of Central Europe.
During the first three weeks of June we
hosted a group of Jewish children that came
to Poland from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

We were able to study the Bible with them,

sing, even dance with them praising God for
such a joyous time together.
As soon as the Polish school system dis
missed our children for summer vacation.
Ostr6da was filled with

Polish children.

During two weeks of Junior Camp we had a

group of 12 visiting children from Lithuania.
They came from a similar camp we con-

During the month of July we were also

involved in a church camp near Lutsk,
Ukraine. Three years ago we introduced this
church to an organized youth camp ministry
and now, praise the Lord, they themselves
continue this type of work. We continue to
assist them in their outreach to poor children
from a local orphanage and children's home.
Later in August we were involved in a fam

an adult-age carnp at Ostroda. This whole

be both beautiful and very fruitful.

RINGING 0UT1

Dto send messages far and wide across

kings.
Likewise, we at GMM join the countless nu

peace from the Lord as you celebrate Christ'i
hope as we also anticipate His soon return!

For me somehow this beautiful

song, "Ring the Bells, Let the
Whole World Know," continues to be a
constant reminder that our mission is

not yet finished. There are still many

who need to know the full story of how
God, through Bethlehem and Calvary,
is reaching down with His redemptive
plan, bringing us the lost privilege of
sharing heaven's glory with Him.
May God help us to recall this beau
tiful story and to communicate It during

this Season with loud and clear voices,

as the bells ring out this good news.

We thank God that throughout the
year of 1998 He kept us mostly in good
health and busy witnessing for Him both
here at home in Canada and the United

States, and in Central Europe where

our mission efforts are concentrated.

We just recently returned from

Europe with many good reports of how
God is blessing and multiplying our
efforts in this part of the world.
To God be the glory, and to all of you
who have remembered us throughout
this year we would like to say "thank
you." Also, Vera and I bring you most
recent greetings from many friends in
Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and

the Czech Republic. Merry Christmas to

all of you!

Ding dong! verily the sky is riven with
angel singing: Gloria, Hosanna in

known carol. And it must have been a

day of fantastic celebration in heaven

when God's Son was born in Bethle
hem.
Another carol reminds us that it was

the angels who first proclaimed the ma

jestic news to a group of unpretentious
shepherds; "Angels from the realms of
glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth;
You who sang creation's story, now pro
claim Messiah's birth: Come and wor

ship Christ the new-born King."

While the first messengers to pro
claim Christ's coming were angels, it
was the shepherds that passed this
message onto others, for we read that
"they spread the word concerning what
had been told them about this child,
and all who heard it were amazed at

what the shepherds said to them." The

privilege of passing on the message of

Jesus' coming has been given to us as
believers.

Lucille and I wish to thank you, our

friends and partners in the Lord's work,
for your prayers and support. We wish
you greatest success in your witness for
Jesus, peace and the Lord's joy, as you
serve Him.

On their way to the border they were
chased by people that they believed were
Mafia. They escaped them, then it took 12
hours on the border for all papers to be
processed. Finally they arrived in Minsk at
2:00 am in the morning.
The next weeks were extremely hectic as
they sought living quarters, attended Lena's
sister's wedding, went through medical
treatment, visited their ailing grandmother
and started in their adjustment to their new
church life. Please pray for them.
