Mr. Silvas Retirement

As you probably know from Mr. Silvas letter last

month, he has retired from SMA to follow a new
career path. I can assure you that you will continue
to have an excellent experience at SMA; and, in fact,
we have many exciting ideas moving forward!

Mr. Torres and I have

been with the studio for
almost 15 years, and
have been working as
owners
since
2011.
After the three of us
became partners, Mr.
Torres and I covered the
studio for a couple of
years while Mr. Silva was
going through trouble with his back (including pre
and post surgery). Since Mr. Silvas full return in
2014, he has been teaching the Tuesday class
regularly. Now, with his retirement, Mr. Silva has
passed on his remaining responsibilities to us.

Mr. Silva will still be present occasionally; he is, of

course, welcome at any belt testing or studio event,
and he will continue to teach cardio and his summer
camp.

Mr. Silva has been an inspiration to many who have

passed through our studio, including Mr. Torres and
myself. His energy, outward motivation, and raw
martial arts skills make him an excellent instructor
and example. While we are sad to see Mr. Silva
retire from the studio, we are excited for the
opportunities that the future holds for all of us
moving forward.

It can be difficult to find
the right studio to join, and
not everyone has a friend
who can help them decide
which studio is best for
their needs.

Mountains are the most majestic expressions of our

natural environment, and they clearly represent
permanence, wisdom, strength, spirit, stability and
solidity.

Rate us on Yelp and tell

everyone what you think
about SMA! You might just
help someone find their
new passion.

Once again, we are faced with a paradox, for Tae

Guek Chil Jang requires the demonstration of all
these characteristics - particularly stability - in the
long, low and powerful forward stances, and even in
the graceful but seemingly weak and unstable cross
stance and tiger stance. Chil Jang is a difficult form
which requires mental and physical effort and
determination.

New
Staff
We would like to officially
welcome our newest staff
members Ms. Kassidy Fusillo
and Mrs. Shannon Brant. We
are excited to be welcoming
such dedicated, kind, and
respectful staff to the team!

New Curriculum Schedule

It can be difficult to play catch-up after a
vacation from class; even in Martial Arts!

And

sometimes, even if youve been to every class, some

techniques will still be more difficult than others
(and will require more time to learn).
That

is

the

idea

behind

having

public

curriculum schedule. Starting this month, you will

be able to view an upcoming schedule of some of
the material that is planned to be covered in class
each Thursday.

Hopefully, this will help keep

students on track, and will also help them make up

for vacation time!

designed by Mr. Hurst to help keep track of your
goals for the belt testing. Dont forget to share your
experience with me. If this idea works well, Ill keep
posting a schedule with each newsletter!

Black Belt

ANSWER: _ _ _ _ _
(Use the letters in the red circles!)

What does it take?

Black Belt is a fantastic goal,
but do you know how you to
get there?
In order to achieve Black
Belt, you need to know all
the color belt techniques:
kicks, blocks, forms, one
steps= from every belt level.
There are also black belt
techniques to learn!
But dont let this scare you.
The belt system trains you
on all of these techniques
slowly as you advance.
It is true that Black Belt
takes a lot of hard work, but
you are already doing some
of that work right now. Just
keep up your practice, hard
work, and good attitude,
and youll be there one day!
-Mr. Hurst

Student of
the Month

Henry Lo
Henry always comes onto
the mats with a smile, and
a great attitude. Plus, he
always puts 100% of his
effort into kicks and
blocks!
These are just a few
reasons why he is an
excellent example.
