8 Simple Ways to Hear God’s Voice

This list is a compilation of my own suggestions as well as those found on the internet.
Habakkuk 2:1-2
1. Recognize the way the Spirit communicates (Eph 1:17-18) – vivid pictures, passing
thoughts - The Bible confirms this in many ways. The definition of paga, the Hebrew
word for intercession… Paga means a chance meeting or encounter, or to place as a
meeting.
2. Psalm 46:10 – still yourself, calm down, don’t rush. If thoughts of unworthiness (i.e.
past sins) come to mind – repent thoroughly and move on… don’t dwell. Be open to
hearing and seeing what God is teaching you.
3. Hebrews 12:2 – fix your eyes on Jesus. Habakkuk looked to see what He would say.
Habakkuk knew a vision was coming when he focused on Jesus. Then he wrote it down
– this is good practice for those who feel they will forget or distort what God tells them if
they don’t write it down. Daniel’s example of looking: Daniel 7:2, 6, 7, 9, 13. Then
what does Daniel do when it comes time to interpret? He gets the true interpretation from
God – Daniel 7:16. Don’t rush to say, “I see this, I don’t know what it means but I see
it.” Wait for God to explain to you a concise nugget of knowledge to be gained from
your vision.
These visions come from the principle of Jesus as Emmanuel – God with us. In fact,
sometimes the visions come so easy that we begin to think it’s just our imagination.
(Give personal example)
But we must remember Joel 2:28. We have access to continual dreams and visions
poured out by the Holy Spirit.
4. Write it down when you understand the substance – Habakkuk was told this by God.
This is optional – Hebrews 4:10 – if you enter into God’s peace no work is needed, just
enjoy and go with the flow.
5. Let God do most of the talking – Ecclesiastes 5:2. Expecting a different voice in your
head? My personal experience has always had God talk to me in my own voice but with
much more wisdom than I possess.
6. Verify what you learned or heard against Scripture – Hebrews 4:12. God has already
spoken every possible path within the Word. Make sure you’re not hearing a voice that is
telling you something contrary to Scripture (Gal 1:8-9) because of 2 Cor 11:14.
7. Practice makes perfect – Psalm 55:17
8. Play some quiet worship music – 2 Kings 3:15, Psalm 77:6. This isn’t anything
overbearing – you must still be able to hear yourself think. Music is helpful because
Scripture explains in Psalm 22:3 that God inhabits the praises of His people.

This list is not intended to restrict the way God is able to speak. Of course there are
many more ways God talks to people. Instead, it’s my hope that this list will aid us in
drawing quickly to the presence of God.
