Fred means flexible living in a timber container. This model is the younger brother of
Su-Si, the first workshop-built mobile home
the architects developed. Fred is somewhat
smaller than the earlier version and can be
more quickly assembled. The unit was delivered to the site only five weeks after the order
was placed. The mobile home consists of two
boxes, one of which is slid inside the other to
form a 3 3 3-metre element that can be
transported on an articulated lorry. On site, the
two sections are drawn apart to form a living
space with a floor area of 16 m2. The kitchen
and bathroom cells and the entire electrical installation are incorporated in the container.
After only two hours site assembly, the dwelling is ready for occupation. The closed box is
set on four steel feet. Two bearers are then
extended and supported on two further feet.
Finally, the inner box is slid out by means of a
chain drive. Metal gratings drawn up in front of
the windows can be lowered to form a terrace.
Fred is not conceived as a long-term dwelling,
but it can be set up in a garden quickly and at
relatively little cost as an office or additional
living space when an existing house becomes
too small. To create a completely independent
unit, a connection to the public sewage system
would be required.

oben ebenerdig zugngliche Speicherraum
dient als Bootsschuppen. Formensprache
In the bare landscape of northern Norway, this
single-storey house crouches behind a protective tongue of land. The west side, where the
two bedrooms are situated, is cut almost
completely into the slope of the ground. Only
the projecting timber-clad gable defies the raw
climate. The living room on the east face, with
its continuous strip windows, commands a
view of the fjord, the sea and the mountains
beyond. The recessed fronts between the living
area and bedrooms afford protection for the
entrance zone and terraces and serve to
improve the daylighting and ventilation of the
bedrooms. The large attic space is used as a
boathouse. This timeless structure adopts the
traditional forms and materials of the area and
blends into the landscape.

term work in building construction and longterm employment in the field of tourism. The
application of local craft traditions in making
wattle fences and screens, and the use of masonry techniques, for example has allowed
otherwise unskilled labour to be employed. The
building in Umtata, in which the actual museum
is housed, was once the seat of the colonial
government. During the period of apartheid,
it was used by the legislative assembly of the
Transkei. Plans exist to document the long
struggle against oppression in this building.
Mandela spent his early childhood in the district
of Qunu, and he intends to return to one of its
18 localities. In a close collaboration between
the people, the government and the architects,
a brief was drawn up for the construction of a
youth and education centre. Roughly 30 kilometres from Qunu lies Mvezo, Mandelas place
of birth. In the 1960s, the government forcibly
resettled the population of this village. Today,
plans exist to preserve the circular foundation
walls of the dwellings. The information stand
forms a striking starting point for the tour, which
traces the life of Nelson Mandela and the long
road to freedom. A raised timber walkway and
a stone platform are distinguished from the
visitors paths and the ruins as newly created
places of contemplation. In addition, a reservoir
and a shady washing facility have been built,
where the people of the scattered villages in the
area can come together. Before the creation of
these amenities, the villagers had to fetch water
in canisters from the river.

zwei Metern lamellenfrmig angeordnete
BSH-Binder sind die einzige Trgerlage fr
die 40 mm starke Dachschalung. Stahlkreuze
