OBJECTIVE:
Givenanequationforthedisplacementofamovingobject,findanequationforitsvelocityand
anequationforitsacceleration,andusetheequationstodeterminethemotion.

Displacementisalsoposition,ordirecteddistanceittellsyouhowfartheobjectisfromits
initialplaceand
whatdirection.
Anegativedisplacementtellsyouhowmuchanobjectmovedbackward.
Apositivedisplacementtellsyouhowmuchanobjectmovedforward.
Distanceistheabsolutevalueofdisplacementandgivesyouthetotalamountof
distancetheobjecttraveledbackwardandforward.

Velocityisspeedwithdirection,ordirectedspeedittellsyoutherateatwhichtheobjects
displacementischangingandwhatdirection.
Anegativevelocitytellsyoutherateatwhichtheobjectmovedbackward.
Apositivevelocitytellsyoutherateatwhichtheobjectmovedforward.
Ifdisplacementandvelocityhavedifferentsigns,thentheamountofdisplacementis
decreasing.
Speedistheabsolutevalueofvelocityandtellsyouhowfasttheobjectismoving
akavelocityisthederivativeofdisplacement.
Accelerationisthechangeinspeedwithdirectionwithrespecttotime,ortheinstantaneous
rateofchangeofvelocityittellsyouwhethertheobjectsvelocityisspeedinguporslowing
down.
Ifvelocityandaccelerationhavethesamesigns,thentheobjectisspeedingup,
(velocityisincreasing).
Ifvelocityandaccelerationhavetheoppositesigns,thentheobjectisslowingdown,
