(abionic).
First, there is no direct evidence that will show whether the source of the organic
material in the chondritic meteorites is the result of a truly inorganic origin or was in
an original parent material which was organically created.
Second, there is no field evidence that inorganic processes have occurred in nature,
yet there is mounting evidence for an organic origin.
third, there should be large amounts of hydrocarbons emitted from volcanoes,
congealed magma, and other igneous rocks if an inorganic origin is the primary
methodology for the creation of hydrocarbons.
Golds Hypothesis:
Gold theorized that since petroleum and its component hydrocarbons were present
across the entire universe, there was no reason to believe "that on Earth they must
be biological in origin".[35]
Gold proposed that fossil fuels were trapped inside the core of the Earth in
randomized molecular form nearly 4.5 billion years ago. Over time, the extreme heat
of the core "sweated" the rocks that contained these molecules, pushing them up
through the porous layers of the Earth.
As they move up toward the surface, the hydrocarbons fueled the development of
large microbial colonies, which served as the basis for life on Earth. The migrating
fossil fuels collect biological remnants before becoming trapped in deep underground
reservoirs.[35]
Support:
Soon after Gold started publishing his theories, researchers discovered a number of
ecosystems functioning under "conditions of heat and pressure once thought
impossible to sustain life".
In addition, Gold discovered that the location of major oil-producing regions in the
Middle East and southeast Asia was defined by large scale patterns in surface
geology and topography, such as deep fault lines. He also pointed to the abundance
of helium in oil and gas reserves as evidence for "a deep source of the
hydrocarbons".[36]
Moreover, a few oil reserves thought to have been exhausted were suddenly
generating vast amounts of crude oil [citation needed]. From this, Gold proposed that the
Earth may possess a virtually endless supply suggesting as much as "at least 500
million years' worth of gas" of fossil fuels
Problems:
Organic Hypothesis:
carbon-hydrogen-organic matter connection
First is the carbon-hydrogen-organic matter connection. Carbon and Hydrogen are the
primary constituents of organic material, both plant and animal. Moreover, carbon, hydrogen,
and hydrocarbons are continually produced by the life processes of plants and animals. A
major breakthrough occurred when it was discovered that hydrocarbons and related
compounds occur in many living organisms and are deposited in the sediments with little or
no change.
Biomarkers:
Certain chemicals found in naturally occurring petroleum contain chemical and structural similarities to
compounds found within many living organisms. These
include terpenoids, terpenes, pristane, phytane, cholestane, chlorins and porphyrins, which are
large, chelating molecules in the same family as heme and chlorophyll. Materials which suggest
certain biological processes.
The presence of these chemicals in crude oil is a result of the inclusion of biological material in the oil;
these chemicals are released by kerogen during the production of hydrocarbon oils, as these are
chemicals highly resistant to degradation.
physical characteristics
Nearly all petroleum occurs in sediments that are primarily of marine origin.
Petroleum contained in non-marine sediments probably migrated into these areas from
marine source materials located nearby.
Furthermore, temperatures in the deeper petroleum reservoirs seldom exceed 300oF
(141oC) .But temperatures never exceeded 392oF (200oC) where porphyrins are
present because they are destroyed above this temperature. Therefore the origin of
petroleum is most likely a low-temperature phenomenon.
Isotopic evidence:
Methane is ubiquitous in crustal fluid and gas.[5] Research continues to attempt to characterise crustal
sources of methane as biogenic or abiogenic using carbon isotope fractionation of observed gases.
13C of methane overlaps that of inorganic carbonate and graphite in the crust, which are heavily
depleted in 12C, and attain this by isotopic fractionation during metamorphic reactions.
One argument for abiogenic oil cites the high carbon depletion of methane as stemming from the
observed carbon isotope depletion with depth in the crust. However, diamonds, which are definitively
of mantle origin, are not as depleted as methane, which implies that methane carbon isotope
fractionation is not controlled by mantle values.[34]
