Cincinnati, Then and NOW.By Iola

0. Hessler. Cincinnati, League of
Women Voters, 1949. 163 pp.
Once again the League of Women
Voters performs the important task
of rounding o u t the equipment of local
schools with a n admirable text of history a n d government t o fill the g a p
inevitably left by standard text books
which must be designed for use i n
cities anywhere. Such texts have to
get vague when describing local government a n d deal in generalities a n d alternatives. This Cincinnati text relates
the history of Cincinnati in good narrative with ample consideration of the
succession of industry and changing
conditions which constitute its economic history.
Finally, i t describes past a n d current
city government features-Cincinnati's
proportional representation elections,
city planning, housing a n d other major
p r o b l e m s w i t h careful completeness,
making appropriate reading not only
for school children b u t for their
parents.
If the schools steadily make full use
of the text so t h a t all children of Cincinnati will go through i t in their
turns, it will constitute a massive contribution t o civic education in t h a t
city.
