Fitz and the 0-8-4

Oh Fitz for the last time, the lab is not a safe place for a
monkey! I mean honestly, youd be better off asking Mack. Maybe he
could train it to hand him tools and stay in the garage. Jemma told
Leo as she set the kettle on for tea. Coulson had finally given them
permission to upgrade the buss lab with a burner for tea, and she
didnt have to trek all the way to the microwave anymore for a cup of
earl grey.
They are way smarter than that! he argued, they can you
know they can figure out puzzles, and thats basically our whole job
right there.
When you can teach a monkey the difference between
potassium chloride and potassium chlorate, then perhaps we can talk
to Coulson about bringing one into the lab.
Youre no fun, really Jemma.
Fitz sighed as he loaded a cartridge of dendrotoxin into the latest
version of the icer. If he had one more agent tell him that it felt a tiny
bit off, he was going to ship them off to Ward and Hydra. Hed lost the
extra ounce! They were flying somewhere over the United States, on
their way to respond to a distress beacon that one of the S.H.I.E.L.D.
outposts had sent out. They had all been ordered underground after
the latest Hydra strike, but the Alaskan outpost had sent out a signal
right before their systems had gone dark. Coulson had Daisy trying to
hack into the system at the moment, and they were gearing up to
infiltrate the base in case it showed any signs of a struggle.
What do you think happened to them? Fitz asked Jemma, who
was handing him a steaming cup of tea. We havent heard any news
in weeks, especially from this far out.
Im not sure Jemma took a sip of her tea. You know, we should
look up what projects that station was working on! Maybe this isnt
about hydra at all, perhaps theres something in the database that can
help.
Perhaps there is he agreed as he pulled it up. Thats odd it
says there were studying an 0-8-4. Normally we get all of those
Is there any documentation on what the object was?
None. Their last log is them checking back into the base after
retrieval, but a file was never uploaded on what they found. Maybe it
was a bust.
Maybe Jemma agreed.
They both turned as Daisys face appeared on the Holodeck.
Hello Daisy Jemma said warmly, hows the hack going? Would
you like some tea brought up?
No, but you guys will really want to see this. I managed to hack
into the video feed on the base, but theres only one source of
movement. It seems like everyone else left.

Well thats not so bad, is it? Fitz said, maybe they all went out
for bowling.
Just wait until you see what they left behind. Im sending it
through to you now.
What in the- Jemma said, staring at the video feed that
appeared on the holodeck. Is that a-
A monkey Fitz answered, a smile splitting his face.
The video feed showed the small monkey moving around the
Alaskan bases control room, fiddling with dials and opening different
sequences on the computer.
What is it doing? Jemma asked, as the monkey seemed to be
typing something into the computer. The screen in front of the primate
changed from red to green for a moment as the words signal
complete flashed across it, and both Jemma and Fitz leaned in closer
to see the time stamp at the bottom of the footage.
Wait a second, Jemma said, is that the same time the distress
beacon came in? Theres no way
I told you they were smart Fitz smiled, then turned to his desk
to retrieve the field vest hed placed there earlier. Theres no way Im
missing this. Do you think Coulson would let us keep an 0-8-4 if it
turned out to be a monkey? I mean, he kept Daisy
