 Count the number of R (QRS complex) points x 10 = pulse pressure
o Pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic and diastolic pressure during a
contraction
 Pulse points
o Temporal artery
o Common carotid artery
o Brachial
o Radial
o Popliteal
o Femoral
o Dorsalis pedis artery
 Tools
o Stethoscope (listen) – for first measure (systolic - 110) pressure is increased
where first slight sound (tapping) is heard (Sounds of Korotkoff) – slowly
releasing pressure. Then continue to release pressure, the first hint of NO sound
of blood flow measures the (Diastolic - 80) pressure.
 Systolic - pressure in arteries at peak of ventricular ejection
 Diastolic – pressure during ventricular relaxation
o Sphygmomanometer (Sphyg ~ mom ~ ano ~ meter) – cuff goes around the
brachial artery (arm).
