Upgrade Overview
This overview provides information about Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Process
Manufacturing Production and Logistics (PM) upgrade changes and requirements. PM was
formerly known as Process Industries.
This upgrade guidance should be used in conjunction with the regular Microsoft Dynamics
AX 2012 upgrade guidance. Also, use the PM specific upgrade files mentioned below in place
of the standard base Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 upgrade files.

Upgrade Paths
You can upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 directly from either Microsoft Dynamics AX
4.0 SP2 and Process Industries 1.1 or Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 SP1 RU5 and Process
Industries 3.1.
If you have a version that is earlier than Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0, you must upgrade to
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 before you can upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

Required Upgrade Files

The following files will be needed to complete the PM upgrade.
For the source environment:

Upgrade Process
Step 1: Before you upgrade
Before you upgrade, you must download the required files and review the Known Issues
documentation.
Download the files
The upgrade files for Process Manufacturing Production and Logistics are contained in a selfextracting file.

Double-click the file and provide a location where the contents of the file should be
extracted. We recommend choosing a location other than the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012
installation folder.
Once extracted, the upgrade solutions are delivered in files as follows:

You must use these files to upgrade Process Manufacturing Production and Logistics rather
than the standard Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 upgrade file.

Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 Pre-upgrade Steps

1. Add the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 source upgrade labels to the application folder on the
Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 source environment and restart the AOS.
2. Import the Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 upgrade X++ project into the Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0
AOT. You should perform a full AOT compilation after importing the project to ensure that
everything is compiled. You must have no compilation errors to continue.
3. Open the pre-upgrade framework AOT project and then the pre-upgrade checklist.
4. Walk through the upgrade.
5. Create a backup of the Microsoft SQL Server database.
6. Continue on the target environment.
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 Pre-upgrade Steps

1. Add the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 source upgrade labels to the application folder on the
AX2009 source environment and restart the AOS.
2. Import the PI AX 2009 upgrade X++ project into the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 AOT. You must
have no compilation errors to continue.
3. Open the pre-upgrade framework AOT project and then the pre-upgrade checklist.
4. Walk through the upgrade.

5. Create a backup of the SQL Server database.

6. Continue on the target environment.

Step 2: Upgrade Process Manufacturing Production and Logistics

1. Ensure the two Process manufacturing models (foundation and upgrade) have been imported.
You should perform a full compilation and a full CIL generation.
2. Set the database maximum buffer size to 48 KB in server configuration and restart the AOS.
3. Attach the SQL Server backup created during the pre-upgrade phase.
4. Walk through the data upgrade checklist.
Note: If you have FEFO reservation selected for item model groups, and if you have
enabled batch dimensions on tracking dimension groups, then you must have shelf life or
best before dates on your item master. If you are upgrading, and you have this setup, you
will have to define shelf life and best before on the product master manually after the
upgrade.
