Acoldstartupisbydefinition,oneofwhichthemaximumofHPcasingandHPshaftislessthan1500C.
Thisnormallymeansthattheunitisshutdownfromthemaximumloadformorethanfivedays.Ifmachine
isstartedfromambienttemperature(HPC/HPshafttempapprox.400C),heatingupofcastingisrequired.
Thisisaccomplishedbysoakingthemachineat360rpmatwarmingupsteamparameters(40kg/cm2,
3600C),tilltheTSEmarginaresatisfactory.
Therifleconstructionofthewaterwallcombinedwiththeboilercirculatingwaterpumpspermits
veryhighrateofpressurerisingofboiler.Anupperlimitof2000C/hrsaturationtemperaturegradientcan
beallowed,i.e.approximatelytheboilerpressurecanbebroughtto20kg/cm2withinanhourofcoldstart
up.ButactualtemperaturegradientislimitedbythethickwalledYpieceprovidedinthemainsteamand
HRHlines.Amainsteamlineheatingistobestartedasearlyaspossible(atapprox.4kg/cm2)as
maximumdifferentialtemperatureallowedbetweeninner(98%)andmidwalltemperature(50%)is
400C.Soboilerloadingisaccordinglyregulated.ItmaybepreferablytostartonlytwoCCpumpsinorder
tominimiseflashingindowncomers(andsubsequentvibration)whentheboilerwaterisinrangeof850Cto
1250C.Thethirdpumpshouldbestartedbeforedrumpressurereaches7kg/cm2tominimisethe
temperaturetransientsexperiencedbythepumpcasing(thisistoavoidfastloadoutbackontheboilerin
theeventofanyCCpumptripping).
Togettherollingparameters,normallytwoelevationoilgunsaretakenwithapprox.70to80t/hr
flowthroughHPLPbypass.AtthattimeM.S.parameterswouldbe40kg/cm2and3600C,HRHparameters
wouldbe12kg/cm2and3600C.
Assoonastheturbineloadinghasstarted,HP/LPbypassclosesandgetscompletelyclosedastheturbine
reachestheboilerload.Firstmillisputintooperationaround10%ofgeneratorload.Secondmillisputinto
operationaround25%whilethirdmillisat40%ofgeneratorload.Fourthandfifthmillsareputinto
operationat60%and80%ofgeneratorloadrespectively.Sixthmillistakentoreachfullgeneratorload.

DuringloadingtheRHoutletsteamtemperaturehastobekeptascloseaspossibletoSHoutletsteam
temperatureBurnertilt,SHspray,RHspraycontrolshastobeadjustedaccordingly.Theturbineloading
rateisdecidedbyaselectioncircuitwhichcomparestheexternalloadgradient,TSEmarginandtime
dependantgradient(setinternally)andfrequencyinfluence.

A warm start up is, by definition, one which the maximum of HP casing/HP shaft temperature is
between1500Cand3500C.Thisnormallymeansthattheunitisshutdownfromthemaximumloadforone
to four days. Depending upon the absolute temperature of HP casing and HP shaft, steam parameters are
derived.AhotstartupisbydefinitiononewhichthemaximumofHPcasing/shafttemperatureismorethan
3500C.InthiscasetogettherollingparameterstwomillsaretakenintoservicekeepingHP,LPbypassin
