Phenomenologycomesfromtheacademicdisciplinesof
philosophyandpsychology,anditisbasedupontheworkof
the20thcenturyphilosopherEdmundHusserl,whichwas
thenlaterdevelopedbyHeidegger.

Introduction
Initsbroadestsense,'phenomenology'referstoaperson's
perceptionofthemeaningofanevent,asopposedtothe
eventasitexistsexternallyto(outsideof)thatperson.
Thefocusofphenomenologicinquiryiswhatpeople
experienceinregardtosomephenomenonorotherandhow
theyinterpretthoseexperiences.
Aphenomenologicalresearchstudyisastudythatattempts
tounderstandpeople'sperceptions,perspectivesand
understandingsofaparticularsituation(orphenomenon).
Inotherwords,aphenomenologicalresearchstudytriesto
answerthequestion'Whatisitliketoexperiencesuchand
such?'.
Bylookingatmultipleperspectivesofthesamesituation,a
researchercanstarttomakesomegeneralisationsofwhat
somethingislikeasanexperiencefromthe'insider's'
perspective.

Theobjectiveofphenomenologyisthedirectinvestigation
anddescriptionofphenomenaasconsciouslyexperienced,
