UPCOMING EVENTS
Ministers Conference
During staff meeting last week I called out all the upcoming meeting
dates: VOAD, Golf Committee, Bible Drill, Ministers Conference, Samaritan Inn
Banquet, VBS Training, Ministry Assistants Day, WMU Annual Meeting,
Executive Board, etc. Does your Spring calendar ever look like that? April is a
busy month!
The word busyness often describes our lives. We get overrun with
activities. Sometimes we are so busy we forget we are in the Kings business!
When I was in RAs as a young boy, I recall learning to sing our RA Hymn, The
Kings Business. The final words of the first stanza say, Im here on business for
my King. The chorus states that our Kingly business means calling people into
reconciliation with God.

Do we ever in church confuse busyness with our Kings business? I am afraid we do that more
than we are willing to admit. You see, it is easy to fill the calendar with various responsibilities, even
wholesome activities that may or may not have anything to do with the mission
we have been given to make disciples of Jesus as we go. Each activity we
Often we lose
calendar becomes fixed in our minds and we expect to repeat that event each
sight of the
week, month, or year. Often we lose sight of the original purpose and fool
original purpose
ourselves into believing that because we are busy, we are doing the Lords
and fool ourselves
work.
I recall in one church where I served how both the Brotherhood meeting on
Sunday morning and the Discipleship Training classes on Sunday night came to
match this description. We knew when these activities occurred. Those who
were in the habit of attending did so, but could not articulate why we were still
having these activities except to say we just always have. Staffing our Brotherhood officers became a
problem. We never had an issue with who would cook. Soon we had no program or missions emphasis. It
was just a group of men who gathered for breakfast once a month. These older men would complain
because the young men would not attend, never stopping to think that there was nothing to draw them, and
no noticeable benefit to attending, particularly at 7:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning.
Discipleship Training was not much different. Attendance was sporadic. The adults sat around in
a circle and read parts from a book. There was no real disciple-making going on. There was no
accountability and little, if any, spiritual depth in what they were doing. They thought other people ought
to come, but never stopped to consider why they should come.
