Information regarding the article: From

friends over the pond, COURIER, July 17.
Dear Editor:
Doris and Edward Caster were members of the Scripps raculty for many
years. Doris Caster was director of the
Scripps Chorus and her husband Edward
Caster was a professor of biology and
psychology. They were both killed, I believe, in 1958, as a result of an automobile crash. They were on their way to a
college Surprise Day event out of
town with several students as passengers
in their car, when they were struck by a
truck as they were turning onto Mountain Avenue from Arrow Highway. Dr.
Caster died instantly and his wife a few
hours later. I believe the students lived.
People in the college community were
overcome with shock, grief and disbelief
as the Casters had been a vital part of our
lives. It is nice to think that a memorial
bench that they contributed exists in
England! Perhaps Scripps or the
COURIER could establish a site where
funds might be donated to replace the
old bench.

Caster benches
Dear Editor:
In the July 17 COURIER, you asked
for information on the Casters. Jay Edward Caster taught biological sciences at
Scripps from 1935 until 1960. Doris Buriff Caster was director of the Scripps
College Choir from 1936 until 1960.
They were killed in an automobile accident in March 1960.
In those days, Scripps observed a Sur-

prise Day each spring when the entire

community skipped classes for a day and
went on an outing to the desert, beach or
other informal destination. The Casters
and three student passengers, who were
unhurt, were part of a caravan heading
out to the desert.
It appears that the benches in Dorchester-on-Thames were in memory of the
Casters, so someone must have given
them after March 1960. They had no
children, so the donor could have been a
former student or other friends who were
involved in the upkeep of the cathedral
there. The Casters lived in Padua Hills
and, living in Claremont for so many
years, no doubt had many friends as well
as decades of Scripps alumnae who remembered them

Dear Editor:
It is very sad to drive around the city
which I have lived for almost 40 years
and look at the yards that I remember
with lush grass turned into gravel pits
with weedsexcuse me, gorgeous succulents. I am trying to hang on to my
grass and dont want to feel guilty about
it. I will do whatever it takes to keep my

Droughts come and go, and I can remember the canyon by my home being
blessed with a huge waterfall some years
ago after heavy rains for three weeks.
Now, it is a drain pipe. However, I can
hope that El Nio will come this winter
and maybe my lawn will be saved with a
belt from nature.

Night Out unites community, local law enforcement

n Tuesday evening,
hundreds of Claremonters, joined by
residents from neighboring areas, descended on Memorial
Park for National Night Out.
The weather was gracious considering the recent heat wave,
with temperatures cooling to
the 70s and accompanied by a
gentle breeze.

Attendees had the chance to mingle

with friends and, in the case of younger
guests, tire themselves out on the playground equipment. Then, come dusk, the
crowd settled back to enjoy an al fresco
screening of the animated family movie
Big Hero 6.
The event was sponsored by the Claremont Police Department, marking the culminating event in its annual Summer
Movies in the Park series. Per usual, CPD
supplied tickets in advance for the big

some fresh-made grub from the In-In-Out
burger truck.
Along with numerous representatives
of Claremont police, there was a booth
presented by Keeping Good in Our
Neighborhood. Founded by Claremont
resident Betty Crocker, KGNH is a neighborhood watch movement that espouses a
commitment to vigilant kindness. In the
case of National Night Out, that kindness
included free KGNH T-shirts.
National Night Out isnt just a local affair. Its a country-wide campaign by the
National Association of Town Watch, a
network of law enforcement agencies,
neighborhood watch groups and crime
prevention associations. Its aim, according
to the NATW website, is to enhance the
relationship between neighbors and law
enforcement while bringing back a true
sense of community.
Bringing the police together with the
communities they patrol is especially im-

portant in todays climate, where isolated

instances of racial profiling and excessive
force by a few officers have, among some
people, engendered suspicion and even
hostility towards police personnel.
The overall message is that there needs
to be transparency throughout law enforcement, and that its important to build
relationships with the people we serve,
Claremont Police Sergeant Robert Rauchfuss said.
Of course, Sgt. Rauchfusswho has
been with the CPD since 1996has a

Pomona College ranks first in Forbes top colleges list

orbes recently released its eighth annual ranking of Americas Top Colleges, and Pomona College has
nabbed the No. 1 spot.
The designation marks the first time a southern California school has topped the list. Williams College,
Forbes top pick last year, was bumped down to No. 2,
followed by Stanford, Princeton and Yale at numbers
three, four and five, respectively.
Forbes rates schools on a return-on-investment scale,
awarding points for low debt, high graduation rates,
student satisfaction and career success.
Forbes notes some trends among its top-ranking
schools, including low student/faculty ratios (8:1 at
Pomona College) and high retention rates. The schools
are all quite venerable, with 1887-founded Pomona College being the youngest.
Among the local liberal arts colleges specific draws,
Forbes cites the fact that 57 percent of freshmen receive
grants averaging almost $40,000. Thats certainly a plus
at a campus where the annual cost of attendance aver-

ages $62,632.
Another positive is the proximity and access
Pomonas 1,610 students have to the other undergraduate institutions in the Claremont Colleges consortium.
The Forbes profile notes that around 80 percent of

Pomona students have taken a class at a neighboring college.

Pomona sophomore Marisol Diaz discussed on her
college choice in a recent ABC7.com interview. A lot
of students here got accepted to Ivy League schools. We
applied. We thought about them. They were options for
us, but Pomona just fit us better, she said.
Striving students pay attention to Forbes list, so
Pomona College President David Oxtoby has warned
the admissions staff that they may receive more applications next year.
In a KPCC interview, Mr. Oxtoby was asked how the
college managed to shoulder its way to the top of the
rankings.
Theres a recognition of quality of our education, the
financial resources that we provide for financial aid for
accessibility and affordability and the outcomes that our
students are going on to do amazing things, Mr. Oxtoby said. I dont think that changed dramatically this
year, but maybe just enough to push us to No. 1.

Ms. Sink has been a kindergarten teacher since 2000
and, though some view teaching the youngest of schoolchildren as a challenge, she relishes the job. I love the
kids, she said. To me, its so important to start them
off with a good foundation. Thats where I want to be.
Seventeen-year-old Mackenzi Lamott has a number
of interests. The senior has earned a spot on Claremont
High Schools all-girls choir and competed with Claremonts Goltz Judo. What the teen really wants, though,
is to be in law enforcement.
To that aim, Mackenzi recently became an Explorer
with the Claremont Police Department, where she will
learn about police work by taking ride-alongs with officers and helping with the departments community
events. Mackenzi also lent her pipes to National Night
Out, delivering a stirring a capella version of The Star
Spangled Banner before the movie started.
After polishing off their burgers, Don and Vania
Chavez and their kids, Nathalia, 10, and Nathan, 14,
spoke to the COURIER about what brought them to the
park and to the city in general.
Seven years ago Mr. Chavez, an IT worker with the El
Monte School District, and Ms. Chavez, a nurse in Norwalk, were looking for a place to buy a house. He said
Claremont was the perfect fit because of its fine school
district. We also love the trees and the way its collegeoriented and family-oriented, Ms. Chavez added.
The family gets out to the citys summer concerts and
movies as often as possible. Its great to catch up with
everyone, because during summer break we dont often
get to see the families from school, Ms. Chavez said.
Nathalia, who says she likes Claremont because its
quiet, attends Mountain View Elementary. Nathan will
be a sophomore at CHS and is a linebacker with the junior varsity football team. Luckily, the team features
cool guys, because five days a week this summer, the
young athletes lift in the CHS weight room from 8:45
to 11 a.m. and return for practice from 3 to 6 p.m.
Speaking of cool guys, Kiwanian Bob Fagg and his
wife Sonja Stump, who were manning Kiwanis ice
cream booth, wanted to give a shout out to the many
generous Claremonters. These include Tony and Gudu

POLICE BLOTTER
Tuesday, July 28
An alleged car thief was arrested after
making an illegal turn, right in front of
Claremont police. Officers were
stopped at a red light on Mills Avenue at
Base Line Road at approximately 5:15
a.m. when the light turned green and a
2008 Nissan Sentra made a left turn in
front of them. Police pulled over the 18year-old driver, Irie Gomez-Welmas, for
failing to yield and a records check revealed the vehicle he was driving had
been reported stolen to Riverside
County Sheriff on July 27. Mr. GomezWelmas was arrested for grand theft
auto and possession of stolen property.
The transient was booked at Claremont
jail and held on $25,000 bail.
Wednesday, July 29
A homeless encampment in Claremont played host to three people who
were arrested by police for outstanding
warrants. According to Lieutenant Mike
Ciszek, officers responded to Andrews
Place and Claremont Boulevard at approximately 8:03 a.m. after receiving a
call that a transient was trespassing in
the nearby field. Upon their arrival, po-

lice made contact with 49-year-old

Pablo Martinez, 47-year-old Matthew
Oldford and 38-year-old Sally Clark. A
records check revealed all three had
outstanding warrants. The three were arrested and booked at Claremont jail.

Burglars struck another home in
north Claremont and fled the scene undetected. At approximately 8:50 p.m.,
unknown thieves shattered a glass door
on the back of a residence located on
the 2700 block on Monticello Road.
Once inside, the intruders ransacked the
home and got away without anyone seeing them. The amount of property loss
is unknown at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.

A Claremont resident thought he was
sober enough to drive, but he was
wrong. Police dispatch received a 9-1-1
call with a vehicle description of a possible DUI driver near First Street and
Indian Hill Boulevard. Officers spotted
the champagne-colored Toyota Tacoma
near Foothill Boulevard and observed
the driver commit several traffic violations before pulling him over. Police

feedback about local coverage.

Two National Night Out attendees, who preferred to
remain nameless, even engaged in some gentle ribbing.

made contact with the 67-year-old

driver and determined he was under the
influence of alcohol. The senior told the
officers hed had a few beers at Eureka
Burger and then another at Beer Belly
Deli where, the driver says, he was advised not to get behind the wheel. I
told them I think Im okay to drive, he
said to police. At nearly twice the legal
limit, he clearly was not sober and the
Claremonter was booked for driving
under the influence and later released
on $5,000 bond.
Friday, July 31
Thieves broke into Chaparral Elementary School and stole $11,200 in
electronics. According to Lt. Ciszek, at
approximately 2:15 p.m. unknown intruders entered the computer lab at the
campus by pushing in the window
frame of the classroom. Once inside, the
hoodlums stole 10 Apple iMac computers, keyboards, mice and headphones,
but dropped two that were later located
in the parking lot of the school. According to school officials, the Claremont
Unified School District will replace
those computers temporarily with refurbished models from the district office so
the lab functions properly when school
begins. Police continue to investigate.

Claremont Police Officers witnessed
Anna Delarosa make a left turn out of
the Piano Piano driveway, ignoring the
Right Turn Only sign marked at the
exit to the parking lot. Police stopped
the 33-year-old driver, who exhibited
signs of alcohol intoxication. Following
a series of field sobriety tests, officers
determined Ms. Delarosa was driving
under the influence of alcohol and arrested the La Verne resident for DUI.
She was booked at Claremont jail and
later released on $5,000 bond.
Sunday, August 2
Police were called to San Jose Park at
3:25 a.m. after someone reported seeing
three males play-fighting before heading into the street, laughing. Upon their
arrival, officers witnessed a vehicle
driving recklessly away from the area
and pulled over the driver at the eastbound on-ramp to the 10 Freeway. Further investigation by police determined
the 29-year-old driver, Ricky Rivera,

Coach Jarin has been an assistant coach for over 30

Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it,
he said recently following practice at CHS. Being an
assistant for 34 years, youre really enjoying being a
football coach, and not really recognizing all of the
hats a head coach puts on. You really dont appreciate
it til you have to go get fitted for all of those hats.
One of those hats involves selecting the players who
will start for the Pack this season and motivating players to make that cut.
Our mission statement, our mantra, is to create a
better version of ourselves every step of our lives. So
if were not elevating, then we are right where we
were yesterday, he said. The kids are embracing that
and trying to make that happen.

On the road, a new window on Claremont

by John Pixley

t turned out that Emma was taking us

the long way. What should have been
a 17-minute trip ended up taking 45
minutes. There were an awful lot of right
and left turns, coming one right after the
other, and we found ourselves driving on
the same roads and the same highway
several times. After a while, Reginald
joined in but he basically gave the same
directions.

Not to worry, though. My two friends and I had left

early, so we werent late. Instead of being super-early
and perhaps rude, we were right on time. Whats more,
all those right turns and left turns were quite lovely,
bringing us down quiet roads lined with beautiful trees
and charming cottages or through golden fields dotted
with livestock and storybook barns. Each turn was
lovelier than the last, and seeing the same roads several times was no problem.
Even the highway was attractive, more like a verdant main road rolling over the hills than a state thoroughfare, easy on the eyes during our repeat jaunts on
it. But there was a problemwe were lost. We had no
idea how to get to where we were going and were
going around in circles. It was hard not to panic, especially with the phones and GPS guidesaffectionately
dubbed Emma and Reginald, the latter of whom is a
bit more bossy, only giving directions without the
street names (Now turn right)losing their connection or running out of power.
It turns out that Grass Valley and Nevada City,
mashing up seamlessly along Highway 49 in the
rolling foothills northeast of Sacramento, are an awfully nice place to get lost, go in circles and even
panic. For the last five or six years, I have been going
to Grass Valley in mid-July to camp at a music festival
at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. But it has been
many more years since I took time to explore these
Gold Country towns. And, ironically, I saw more of
their neighborhoods on this misguided outing.
Thats the best thing about trips: the unexpected adventures when we see things that people dont usually
see, even when they spend time on a visit. That and
meeting people and making new friends. My friends
and I were enjoying both; we were on our way to visit
someone I had met a week earlier at a meeting in

observer
Marin County.
It just so happened that my friends and I would be
attending the music festival in Grass Valley. So we
would be in his neighborhood (his neck of the woods)
for a visit before heading back to Claremont via Lake
Tahoe and Bishop. These sorts of unexpected side trips
and stops are another bonus in traveling.
An additional bonus in this side trip was how it provided another view of Claremont. Yes, this little jaunt,
getting lost and driving in circles in Grass Valley and
Nevada City, opened a new window into our fair little
city for me.
It made me appreciate Claremont even more and
recognize how fair, how attractive, how beautiful and
lovely our little city is. We always like to say how
wonderful and unique Claremont is, but it turns out
thats more than wishful thinking or civic pride.
As I learned not long before this trip and mentioned
in my last column, Claremont has been named by
TheCultuTrip.com, a travel website, as one of the 10
most beautiful towns on the west coast. Thats not all,
though. In this list, it is one of fouronly fourtowns
in California. The other four include, yes, Nevada
City, as well as Cambria and Mendocino.
Think about it. Claremont is seen, by at least some,
to be as fair and charming as these lovely getaway
spots. Is there any one of us who wouldnt jump at the
chance to spend a week, a weekend or even a night in
Cambria or Mendocino? Most of us savor a day spent
in one of these idyllic burgs, especially when they
arent so crowded. The same goes for Nevada City,
though it may not be as well-known.
So Claremont is now seen, or increasingly seen, as
a charming, picturesque town, a getaway spot right up
there with Cambria and Mendocino and the beautiful
Gold Country. Is this surprising? Is this a shock? Perhaps. It certainly got a wow! out of me. But maybe
it shouldnt be.
After all, my last columnthe one in which I mentioned the list on TheCultureTrip.com, was all about
how Claremont is like one big park, ideal for a summer afternoon or evening respite. Not only are there an

impressive number of city parks, there are the Colleges with all their park-like acres. Even with the fading lawns in this unprecedented summer of drought,
they still offer a peaceful escape, complete with their
noted trees. Indeed, Claremonts trees and urban forest
was a major factor in the websites citation.
And there are plenty of stories about people getting
out and enjoying Claremont and its urban forest, not to
mention its cultural opportunities and its unique shops
and restaurants. In the same edition of the COURIER,
there was not only an article about another new restaurant in town but a feature on the Claremont Senior Bicycle Group. Sponsored by the super-active Claremont
Senior Programyet another stand-out in this communitythe group plans and leads regular weekly
rides on our pleasant streets. Longer rides further
afield are also on the schedule but, as Angela Bailey
points out in the article, There is no better place to be
a cyclist than the City of Trees. With over 30 linear
miles of bicycle infrastructure and organizations
geared towards all ages and cycling skill levels, Claremontwhich has been designated as a bike-friendly
city by the League of American Cyclistsis a haven
for cyclists.
It turns out that, with all our trees, this is actually a
healthier town. According to a study published in Scientific Reports analyzing two sets of data from
Toronto, adding 10 trees to a street can make a resident feel seven years younger. Furthermore, the study
found that residents on streets with a higher density of
trees are less likely to have cardio-metabolic conditions such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes.
Trees remove pollutants from the air, so it could be
the cleaner air, or it could be that adding more trees on
a street encourages people to get outside and exercise
more, said Marc Berman, director of the Environmental Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of
Chicago and the senior author of the paper. Or it
could be that the environment is more beautiful, and
that contributes to health.
We should be pretty darn healthy here with more
than 24,000 trees. Thats right, there are over 24,000
trees in Claremont and, in a project carried out by students in Pomona College professor Char Millers Environmental Analysis 190 class, they are all mapped
online. For information on any of the trees lining Claremonts streets or in its parks and other public places,
visit claremontsurbanarboretum.wordpress.com.
I wonder if Nevada City can beat that.

How Claremont was named

by John Neiuber

nland Valley Daily Bulletin

columnist David Allen, a
Claremont resident, recently posted on Facebook that
the Special Olympics World
Games had a picture of host
town Claremont on its website
that didnt look much like the
Claremont we all know.
The picture shows a view from the hills
overlooking the city, a university and a large
body of water. It was taken from Claremont,
but from the Claremont neighborhood of
Berkeley, California. The university is not
one of the Claremont Colleges, but UC
Berkeley. And the large body of water is not
the swamp that once occupied Pilgrim Place,
but the San Francisco Bay.
Evidently, an enthusiastic website developer for the Special Olympics searched for
a picture of Claremont and the view of
Berkeley was found and posted. When you
click the link for the Official Claremont
Website, it does take you to the much drier
City of Trees.
Yet, the mistaken identity on the website
is not without a connection between the
Claremont neighborhood of Berkeley and
the city of Claremont.

The father of Claremont, Henry Austin

Palmer, had lived in the Claremont area of
Berkeley prior to coming to southern California in 1882. The northeast portion of our
Claremont, known as Piedmont Mesa, was
so named by Mr. Palmer. According to former Claremont resident Ruth Breslin, who
responded to the Facebook post and currently lives in Berkeley, Mr. Palmer lived on
Piedmont Avenue in Berkeley, directly
across from where the university football
stadium is now located.
Mr. Palmer was responsible for much of
what has become Claremont. He assisted in
the incorporation of the Pomona Land and
Water Company and the Pomona Bank,
serving as president of both. He convinced
the Santa Fe Railroad to build its route
through northern Pomona, making it possible for Claremont to be founded. The railroad had been looking at a southerly route,
near what is currently San Bernardino Road
in Pomona or a northern route near Base
Line Road. Mr. Palmer suggested that if the
Santa Fe built between the two, it could establish several new towns.
The Pomona Land and Water Company
sold its holdings in northern Pomona to the
Pacific Land Improvement Company. Its
major stockholder, C.W. Smith of Kansas,
was the first vice president of the Santa Fe
Railroad. Mr. Palmer also sold some of his

property and home, El Alisal, which is now

Memorial Park, to the Pacific Land Improvement Company. Pacific Land plotted
the new town on 365 acres it owned and on
some 65 acres owned by Mr. Palmer.
In February of 1887, the Pomona
Progress newspaper noted the sale: A large
plaza will be in the center of town. The SB
& LA RR [later purchased by Santa Fe] is to
go through the lower portion of the town. A
name has not been selected. Among those
proposed are North Pomona, Alisal, Clara
Vista, Corona, Springfield, Claremont, etc.
Within a month, the name Claremont had
been selected. In March of 1887, the
Progress reported, Claremont is the name
of the new town on the San Bernardino and
Los Angeles Railroad.
The article reported that The townsite is
beautifully located on a mesa, some 1200
feet above the level of the sea, and at present is covered with a vast grove of
sycamores. A large gang of brush cutters
are at workcleaning the land of all the undergrowth and trees which will be in the way
of streets, avenues and parks.
In her book, Claremont, a Pictorial History, Judy Wright explains that There is little documentation but there are several legends or stories about how Claremont was
named.
Ms. Wright notes that a director of the
land company was from Claremont, New
Hampshire. Another possibility was that the
Santa Fe directors preferred Claremont because it was more familiar than many of the
Spanish names submitted. Ultimately, Ms.
Wright believed that Mr. Palmer suggested
Claremont as a nod to Berkeley. But, as she
stated, All or part of these stories may be
true, but it is interesting to examine what

documentation does exist.

In a 1907 letter to Frank Wheeler, a
prominent Claremont real estate developer
and the father of State Route 30, Mr. Palmer
wrote:
When a name for the townsite came to
be chosen, I was consulted but knew the
choice would ultimately be made in Boston.
They had cautiously offered to give it my
name, but I advocated a Spanish name, as a
wide range of choice could be had, each
expressive, and pertinent and withal musical.
The result was, I submitted a list of about a
half dozen names, each expressive of the
grand view of the Sierra (Madre). And as I
gave it in, it was asked if there was no English name that nearly or practically carried
the same idea. I therefore added the name
Claremont, calling attention to the fact that
it was a somewhat strained definition of the
idea a clear view of the mountains. When
action was taken in Boston, scant consideration was given to my Spanish suggestions,
but Claremont was seized upon by one of
the officials as a compliance with my suggestionalso stating that he had lived in or
near Claremont, New Hampshireand so
the name was given in his honor.
Claremont could easily have become
Palmer or Alisal or any of the other names
Henry Palmer submitted to the Santa Fe directors. However, it was Claremont he submitted and was selected by the directors.
All evidence suggests that name could only
have come from his association with his
former neighborhood in Berkeley.

Jane Ellen Raser

OBITUARIES

Dedicated teacher, loving mother

Jane Ellen Raser, a Claremont resident
and longtime educator, died peacefully at
age 69 on July 31, 2015 at Pilgrim Place
due to complications from Parkinsons
disease. Her husband was at her side.
She was born on June 29, 1946 to C.
Alvin and Sarah Jane Light and grew up
in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. She received a
bachelors degree from Messiah College
in Grantham, Pennsylvania, a Master of
Education from Shippensburg University
and later a Master of Public Health degree
from UCLA.
While at Messiah College, she met Carl
J. Raser. They were married on June 22,
1971, and recently celbrated their 44th anniversary. Mrs. Raser enjoyed music and
played piano and organ beautifully. She
valued staying connected socially with
family and friends and spiritually through
Peace Fellowship, a local Anabaptist
house church. She had an inquisitive nature and a sharp wit, matched by the ability to find the perfect words to express her
views.
Jane was known for her frugality, clip-

ping coupons with zeal and buying quality products only at deep discounts. She
was upbeat and energetic about life, making a hobby of liking Facebook photos
of her new granddaughter. Most important to her was being a mother. Her children are forever grateful for the
innumerable hours she spent on southern

California freeways carting them to-andfrom school, sports practices, art classes
and music lessons. She was completely
devoted to her children, and was rewarded
by seeing them become the kind of young
adults she had hoped to raise.
Mrs. Raser was a dedicated and respected educator with more than 25 years
experience in elementary education, retiring in 2008. She taught at Rowland Elementary School, St. Marks Episcopal
School and Foothill Country Day School,
making lasting impacts on students and
parents alike. She stayed connected with
many of her students and their families
throughout the years.
After retirement, Mrs. Raser enjoyed
getting together for coffee and chats with
her many friends, going to water aerobics
with her gym buddies and volunteering at
REAL Connections, a resource network
for seniors located in Claremont. She will
be remembered as a loving wife, dedicated mother, adoring grandmother, caring friend and passionate educator, and
will be greatly missed by all.

She is survived by her husband Carl J.

Raser; by her daughter Sarah Jane Raser
and son-in-law Ben Sherwood; by her son
Andrew C. Raser and by her granddaughter Jane Gladys Sherwood. She also
leaves her brother Earl Light and her sisters, Jean Macfarlane and Eleanor Hess.
The family will hold a memorial service on Saturday, August 15 at 3 p.m. in the
Kresge Chapel at the Claremont School
of Theology, located on the corner of west
Foothill Boulevard and north College Avenue in Claremont. All are welcome to attend; a reception will follow.
Jane was a much-loved volunteer with
REAL Connections, a program of Community Senior Services, and her family is
thankful for the multiple resources provided by the program as Janes Parkinsons progressed.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to
REAL Connections made in memory of
Jane Raser are appreciated. Memorial
donations may be mailed to 141 Spring
St., Claremont, CA 91711 or made online
at www.communityseniorservices.org.

Helen Ketchum
Mother, college registrar, volunteer extraordinaire
Helen Ketchum, a longtime Claremont
resident, died on July 29, 2015 at her
home in Sandpoint, Idaho. She was 90.
She was born on July 10, 1925 in South
Pasadena to Bennie and Hope Furlow.
She married Donald Ketchum, also of
South Pasadena, and moved to Ontario
and later to Upland, where the couple
raised their four children.
When her children were young, Mrs.
Ketchum was active as a Cub Scout
leader, Girl Scout leader and Superintendent of Sunday school at the First

United Methodist Church in Ontario. She

received her Bachelor of Arts degree in
organizational management from Pitzer
College and worked as registrar at Scripps
College until her retirement in 1987. What
Helen loved most about her position as
registrar was working with young college
students.
In retirement, the Ketchums moved to
the Claremont Manor retirement community, where Mrs. Ketchum was a very active volunteer docent at the Rancho Santa
Ana Botanic Garden (RSABG). As a vol-

unteer docent, she enjoyed giving tours to

children and marching in the Claremont
Fourth of July parade with other Garden
volunteers. She retired from volunteering
at the RSABG after 20-plus years of service with the special honor of Nature Interpreter Emerita.
In 2009, she and Don moved to Luther
Park Senior Living in Sandpoint, Idaho,
where Mrs. Ketchum continued her active
involvement in the First United Methodist
Church. In addition to gardening, she
loved dancing, music, traveling with her
husband Don and spending time with her
family and friends.
Helen was always singing and skipping along lifes path, family shared.
She is survived by her husband of 69
years, Donald; by her four children and
their spouses, Ken and Randie Ketchum
of Seattle, Kathy and Gay Ketchum of
Sherman Oaks, Jeff and Linda Ketchum
of Colton and Julie and Steve Case of

Jeanie Sheahan Beauvais

Theater fan, loving mother and grandmother
Virginia Jeanie Helen Sheahan, a longtime resident of La Verne and Claremont, died on July 27,
2015, surrounded by her family. She was 71.
She was born on Christmas day, 1943 in Chicago,
Illinois to James W. and Phyllis Dohm Sheahan. Her
family moved to California in 1947, settling in Alhambra where Jeanie lived for 20 years, attending St.
Stephen Martyr elementary school in nearby Monterey
Park followed by San Gabriel Mission High School.
Ms. Sheahan moved to Claremont in the early 80s
and fell in love with the town, its thoughtful architecture and rich history. She loved poring through old
photographs showing the City of Trees in a bygone
era.
She developed a passion for music and theater at a
young age, performing in high school and becoming a
member of the La Verne vocal group A Special Company. Ms. Sheahan had a particular affinity for musical theater, playing in the Gallery Theatres production of Fiddler on the Roof and in Arise Theatres
Meet Me in St. Louis.
Over the years, she enjoyed heading to Los Angeles
to take in performances like Phantom of the Opera.
One of her favorite memories was the time she traveled to Chicago to visit her favorite aunt, Rita Dohm
Buelenswho will turn 100 this Septemberand,
while there, caught a production of Wicked.
Closer to home, she was a regular guest at Claremonts Candlelight Pavilion dinner theater, with favorite shows being the perennial classics Music Man
and South Pacific. Ms. Sheahan was an art aficionado as well. After taking classes in creating
stained glass, she made many lovely pieces for her
friends and family.
Spending time outdoors was another of Jeanies
pastimes. She was an avid gardener, who never met a
flower she didnt like, and delighted in visiting the
beautifully landscaped grounds of the Huntington Library. She could regularly be seeing strolling around
Claremont, generally wearing headphones because
she liked to listen to books on tape as she walked. A
regular at the Claremont Library, Ms. Sheahan gravitated towards thrillers, with Stephen King being her
go-to author, as well as books about science, astronomy and space exploration.

Jeanie was a civic volunteer throughout her life.

She volunteered her time and talent with the Red
Cross, travelling to Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. She was also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and a lifelong supporter of St. Judes Hospital
and World Vision.
Jeanie was an employee of Perkin Elmer Aerospace
for many years, and then a secretary for the La Verne
Police Department. Her most important job, though,
was her role as a loving mother, grandmother, sister,
aunt and friend. Her love of family was particularly
evident during the holidays, when she threw large
dinner parties for relatives.
I think what Ill miss most about her is the way she
would always burst into song, her daughter Janet
said.
Ms. Sheahan is survived by her four siblings, Jim
Sheahan, MaryBeth Sheahan Panton and her husband
Neil Panton, Tom Sheahan, and Catherine Sheahan
Sahu and her husband Ranajit Sahu; by her four children, Janet Major Beyke and her husband Michael
Beyke, Nancy Major and her husband Steve Mejia,

from his early years of watercolor on paper to todays works
on canvas as well as his foursided, freestanding pylon/sculptures. Painting earlier in life as a
hobby has evolved into a lifelong
emotional passion, an adventure
expressed by bright color and fueled by a desire to experiment
with other mediums. Reception:

Zaldivar: Street View Highlights, a solo show of Joe Zaldivars mixed media works on
paper. Utilizing multiple views
available through Google
Maps, including aerial, street
and interior, Mr. Zaldivar explores how the multiplicity of a
location can be transformed by
technology and the artists hand.
His Street View drawings, ren8

dered in his singular cartoon realism-style, offer a particularly

intriguing complexity. While
the Google Maps street view
method of photography offers a
uniform perspective that has
come to feel familiar to many
users, Mr. Zaldivars renderings
create curved and warped versions of perspectival space by
stitching together multiple images into a two dimensional
work of art.

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this
property lien, you should understand that there are risks
involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be
bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the
highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically
entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property.
You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned
off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at
the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying
off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before
you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size
of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by
contacting the county recorders office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee
for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the
property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:
The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the
California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not
present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your
sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the
rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property,
you may call 888-988-6736 for information regarding
the trustees sale or visit this Internet Web site
http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number
assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-15665441-BF . Information about postponements that are
very short in duration or that occur close in time to the
scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the
telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The
best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property
address or other common designation, if any, shown
herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property
may be obtained by sending a written request to the
beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to
convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's
sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of
monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set
aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall
be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The
Purchaser shall have no further recourse against
the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagees
Attorney. If you have previously been discharged
through bankruptcy, you may have been released of
personal liability for this loan in which case this letter
is intended to exercise the note holders rights against
the real property only. As required by law, you are
hereby notified that a negative credit report reflecting
on your credit record may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit
obligations. QUALITY MAY BE CONSIDERED A

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER

ESTATE OF JACQUELINE A. CROWL
Case No. BP163829
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both,
of JACQUELINE A. CROWL
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed
by Joelle A. Green in the Superior Court of
California, County of LOS ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests
that Joelle A. Green be appointed as personal
representative to administer the estate of the
decedent.
THE PETITION requests the decedent's will
and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate.
The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court.
THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority
will allow the personal representative to take
many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important
actions, however, the personal representative
will be required to give notice to interested
persons unless they have waived notice or
consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be
granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause
why the court should not grant the authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be held
on Sept. 2, 2015 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 5
located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA
90012.
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state
your objections or file written objections with
the court before the hearing. Your appearance
may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file
your claim with the court and mail a copy to
the personal representative appointed by the
court within the later of either (1) four months
from the date of first issuance of letters to a
general personal representative, as defined in
section 58(b) of the California Probate Code,
or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section
9052 of the California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority
may affect your rights as a creditor. You may
want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the
court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for
Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of
an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or
of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special
Notice form is available from the court clerk.
