NutriJuice proven to help reduce iron deficiency anemia

A study has recently con-
firmed the effectiveness of
NutriJuice in helping reduce
iron deficiency anemia (IDA).
NutriJuice is an orange fruit
drink developed by Coca-Cola
Philippines and the Food and
Nutrition Research Institute of
the Department of Science and
Technology (FNRI-DOST). For-
tified with iron, zinc, lysine
and vitamins A and C,
NutriJuice was distributed for
free to 30,000 students nation-
wide. For 120 days starting July
2009 the following areas re-
ceived the drink: Quirino,
Palawan, Zambales, Davao,
Bukidnon, Tacloban, and Pasig,
Taguig and Marikina in Ma-
nila.
The problem with IDA
IDA poses a great risk to
children as it hampers their
physical and mental develop-
ment. Studies have demon-
strated the consequences of
IDA as low physical capacity,
low resistance to infections,
poor growth, and poor school
performance. Short memory
span, poor concentration and
irritability are also some of its
effects.
Furthermore, it has also been
shown that IDA can cause a
permanent deficit of at least 5
IQ points and reduced learn-
ing capacity by 10 percent dur-
ing school days.
2006 Efficacy Study
in San Juan
In 2006, Coca-Cola and the
FNRI-DOST sought to test the
efficacy of NutriJuice in a well-
controlled study involving 277
students from Pinaglabanan
Elementary School in San Juan,
Manila. Strict compliance to
inclusion and exclusion crite-
ria for participation in the
study was observed. NutriJuice
was directly administered to
all study children in a central-
ized setting for 100 feeding
days. At the end of the feeding
period, the study showed that
NutriJuice was able to reduce
IDA from 100% at baseline to
13% at endline.
2008 Effectiveness Study in
Quirino
In 2008, an effectiveness or
non-controlled study was con-
ducted by the FNRI-DOST
among 5,000 students in
Quirino province. During this
year, NutriJuice was also dis-
tributed to 1,500 students in
Bagong Silangan Elementary
School, Quezon City.
With the same daily feeding
schedule, students were given
the juice under normal setting
wherein the school teachers
managed the feeding program
and were tasked to distribute
NutriJuice to children covering
120 days. All children with
parental consent were given
NutriJuice and were examined.
Intake of NutriJuice resulted to
a reduction of IDA by as much
as 40.1%.
Additionally, the mean
weight and height of the stu-
dents showed significant in-
crease. Noteworthy to mention
is the increment in the percent-
age mean score of grades 2-6
schoolchildren in the areas of
English, Math and Science sub-
jects. Furthermore, 74.21% of
schoolchildren had complete
attendance during the 120 feed-
ing days. In most cases, children
become absent from school be-
cause of distance and/or lack
of food, either at home or to bring
to school. It follows that if chil-
dren are absent they learn less;
therefore attendance is an im-
portant part of their education.
