I give my highest recommendation to Dr. Monika Kiss for this promotion. Dr. Kiss has been my teacher,
advisor, and a good friend for the last 6 years. While I was working on my undergraduate degree, she
advised me frequently and expertly on planning my course schedule. I was in the process of completing
two degrees with little overlap in major requirements, and Dr. Kiss made sure that I would be able to
complete my curriculum on time and in a manageable pace. I believe that I could not have done this
without her guidance.
Over the course of 4 years, I have taken a little over 10 different math courses instructed by Dr. Kiss, and
each of them have been challenging but fair. Each course expanded my way of thinking and challenged
me to do more than what is required. Besides the actual course materials taught by Dr. Kiss, her
teaching style challenged me to think critically. I personally enjoyed her way of gauging our knowledge
with tests, rather than focusing on remembering equations or proofs as every other math course I have
taken have, it focused on the inner workings of the proofs and solving methods that were discussed in
class. I remember not getting a grade as high as I thought I would on my first test that I took with Dr. Kiss;
I had simply memorized all the proofs that we went over in class, rather than trying to understand the
logic behind the proof. This was more than enough to get the highe st grades consistently in every other
class I have taken before, and it would be enough in other classes I would take in the future. Every class I
have taken with her followed this model, which has forced me to learn the material well rather than
simply memorize it long enough to regurgitate it on the test. Dr. Kiss has an amazing ability to explain
complex and arcane mathematical concepts in a way that is both understandable and enjoyable. Many
proof based classes I have taken with her would have been much harder and not as valuable in my
overall education. I believe that this ability to communicate makes Dr. Kiss the best professor that I have
ever had.
Dr. Kiss has introduced and implemented many new exciting ideas and programs to Saint Leo University
and I am proud to have been part of those new activities. The collaborative efforts of the mathematics
club at Saint Leo, led by Dr.Kiss has one of the smallest yet one of the most active and influential student
groups on campus, instrumental in bringing great programs such as Math circles to Saint Leo. She has
also mentored and advised many students, including myself, in creating and research many math related
projects, most of the time helping us come up with research that involves our personal interests out side
of "traditional" mathematics, such as music, videogames, and biology. She also participates in programs
in her personal time, and at times at great cost to expand her knowledge and expertise, so that she can
bring back those experiences for all of her students at Saint Leo as well as her students in Math circles. I
full-heartedly believe that she will continue to contribute greatly to the Saint Leo mathematics program
as well as any student that she works with.
