Introduction
Energy Saving.
Recuperator heat recovery units offer
various possibilities for energy saving
and an alternative for reducing energy
costs and atmospheric pollution.
Characteristics.
Heat-exchangers are exchangers that
enable heat to be transferred between
the input and the output air-flows based
on the difference in temperature.
Recuperator offer two series of static
plate exchangers (Series B and F) and
a rotary exchanger series (Series T),
whose characteristics meet the requirements of both the industrial and the
non-industrial markets.

Condensation.
Plate-type exchangers do not allow for
the passage of humidity from one flow
to another, but can transfer part of the
latent heat contained in the wet
exhaust air-flow; this happens
especially when external temperatures
are very low, so that the supply air
cools the wet exhaust below its dew
point and condensation is formed.

Reliability and High Performance.

The plate type are air-to-air heatexchangers that have no moving parts,
offering very high reliability and
performance; in addition, they make for
low energy consumption in associated
boiler equipment.
The heat is transmitted directly from the
higher to the lower temperature-flow;
the air-flow pattern is of cross-flow
design, and the exchanger's efficiency
is between 40 and 75%.
Sealing.
This type of heat-exchanger consists of
flat plates with swirl control, whose
spacing depends on the type of
application.
The exhaust and supply air-flows are
completely separated by means of
special seals.
Materials.
The plates are usually made of
aluminium, due to the latter's corrosionresistance, ease of manufacture, noninflammability, and durability. In special
cases, such as the presence of
corrosive parts, the aluminium can be
coated with anti-corrosion paint, while,
in the case of high operating
temperatures or special applications,
stainless steel alloys are used.

Quality
It is Recuperator's constant aim to
maintain the highest standards of
quality. Stated performance figures are
certified by tests carried out in
accordance with Eurovent rules by
independent organizations such as
Technikum of Lucerne (Switzerland)
and Istituto Ricerche e Collaudi Masini
of Rho (Milan).
The quality and performance of
Recuperator products are guaranteed
by a well-equipped research laboratory
and an ASHRAE wind-tunnel, where
tests are conducted periodically on
product lines.

All supplies of aluminium coils are

checked and tested using our Erichsen
test equipment, in accordance with DIN
Standard 50 101. Checks are repeated
during and at the end of the
manufacturing process so that the
physical characteristics of the materials
used are continuously monitored.

Special Applications
The air-flow direction is of no real importance. However, it is recommended that the exhaust air pass through the heatexchanger from the top towards the bottom in cases in which the formation of condensation is to be expected.

Some examples of the behaviour of the two air-flows, using a single heat-exchanger.
In special cases, it is possible to use several heat-exchangers to overcome inconveniences such as: lack of space, a major
difference between the two flows, etc. The drawings show a few examples.

Instructions Aluminium Version

Instructions on transport and assembly
of Series B and F.
Packaging.
The packaging of Series F consists of a
pallet-type base and three wooden
panels fitted on the equipment with a
strap.
For Model 06 and for finned lengths not
exceeding 1200 mm, packaging
consists of special triple-corrugated
cardboard.
Packaging for Series B consists of the
same type of special corrugated
cardboard.

pressure than that allowed, with

possible damage to the heat recovery
unit. Care should also be taken to avoid
foreign matter (rubble, paper, etc.)
being sucked into the system. It is
therefore recommended that the airducts be cleaned before installation, or
a temporary by-pass around the unit
set up, or provisional filters be fitted.

Preliminary Inspection.
Before removing the packaging it is
advisable to check that the heatexchanger has not been damaged in
transit; careful visual checking should
be enough to ensure that the
packaging is in good condition. It
should not be removed until the time
comes to connect the heat-exchanger
to the air-ducts or install it in the airtreatment units, thus avoiding any
soiling or damage of any kind.
When starting up the plant, care should
be taken to avoid "water hammering"
which could cause a higher differential

Installation.
The heat-exchanger may be installed in
air-ducts, or else inside an air-handling
unit. It is important that the plates
should be set vertically, to facilitate the
draining of condensation. In the airhandling units, the heat recovery unit is
lodged on proper slides and the seals
on supports (see Fig. 1), made easier
by the use of rubber weather bands.

19

Duct installation is illustrated in Fig. 2.

Heights, indicated by the letter A (35
mm for Series F; 8.5 mm for Series B)
represent the space required for
drilling; the heights indicated by B (30
mm for all series) indicate the space
within which no drilling may be done
(Fig. 2/a, 2/b). Models 14, 16, 20, and
24 are obtained by coupling 4 individual
elements. This work is carried out at
our workshop.
The exhaust air, which may produce
condensation or frost during the winter,
should preferably enter the heatexchanger from above.
The condensation will be collected in
the lower part of the duct or of the airhandling unit, where it will be advisable
to provide a discharge system
equipped with a siphon.

In installing plant with a by-pass it is

advisable not to fix ducts directly on the
damper.
Maintenance.
Recuperator units have no moving
parts, so mechanical maintenance is
not called for. To deal with dust or
pollutant substances, it will be

necessary to provide adequate filters

upstream of the heat-exchangers.
Units may be cleaned with compressed
air (in the case of dusty surfaces), at
the same time taking care not to
damage the plates and seals, or else
by using a detergent spray (e.g.,
Decade, ND-150, Chem Zyme,
Primasept, Poly-Det, Oakite 86M or the
like) to remove greasy deposits.
Strongly alkaline or other substances
corrosive to aluminium or the seal
should obviously be avoided.
NB: In countries subject to sandstorms,
it is necessary to provide sand filters
plus high-efficiency pouch-type filters
on the external air-intakes.

The holes drilled in the sections and

sides of the four corners have to be
made by the customer. The ducts are
held together with through-screws,
fastened with nuts and bolts (shown in
detail in Figs. 4 and 5).
Models 08, 10, and 12 are obtained by
combining four individual components
(Models 04, 05, 06). For efficient
sealing, a gasket between the flanges
is recommended.

Selection
Recuperator supplies its customers with
the REX program (Recuperator
Exchangers). This enables customers
to select the best heat-exchanger, since
it contains a price-list and all the
necessary technical information.

23

For air-handling unit manufacturers, a

personalized program is provided that
can be incorporated in the
manufacturer's selection program,
called REX_RECAM (Recuperator
Calculation Module).

All programs are available in Italian,

English, French, German, Spanish,
Turkish, and Norwegian, and can be
translated into any other language
required.
An instruction manual is available with
the programs, which are easy to use
and provide assistance in dealing with
requirements of all kinds.

24

Selection
The tables in Series B provide some basic factors for rapid selection.
Once the air volumes are known, it is possible to select the model suitable for the customer's requirements, including
dimensions, pressure drop, and efficiency.
The values given refer to the following conditions:
- Air renewal = exhaust air
- Input temperature of air renewal = 5C
- Temperature of exhaust air = 22C with 50% relative humidity
- Pressure drop on the exhaust side.
For an exact technical and cost evaluation, Recuperator recommends using its computer programs.
