CONCLUSIONES LOGICAS
PARTE III
CONSEJO O SUGERENCIA
Observa estas 2 estructuras gramaticales:
a) Subject + HAVE BETTER + verbo sin "to"
You had better take Chemistry this semester.
b) Subject + HAVE BETTER + not + verbo sin "to"
You had better not take Philosophy this semester.
"to".
estudiantes hispano-parlantes).
EJEMPLOS:
Incorrect: You had better to study if you don't want to fail in OM
exams.
Correct:
You had better study if you don't want to fail in OM exams.
OM)
BROMAS APARTE... ESPERAMOS QUE HAYAS COMPRENDIDO !!
Bsicamente usamos USED TO con el infinitivo de un verbo (used to do,used to go, etc.) para
dos tipos de casos:
to play tennis a lot, but now he's too lazy (Ernesto sola jugar mucho tenis pero ahora est
demasiado perezoso).
2. Situaciones del pasado QUE YA NO EXISTEN: We used to live in a small village, but now
we moved to Milan (Solamos vivir en un pueblo pequeo pero ahora nos mudamos a Miln).
La estructura USED TO + INFINITIVE expresa siempre pasado, no es posible el presente. No
puedes decir: I use to dance (Suelo bailar) Para ello cuentas con el Simple Present que
expresa "hbito en el presente": I dance (bailo, suelo bailar).
La forma interrogativa es DID + PERSON + USE TO + INFINITIVE(obviamente siempre en
Simple Past): Did you use to eat a lot of candy when you were a child? (Solias comer muchos
caramelos cuando eras nio?).
La forma negativa es DIDN'T USE TO + INFINITIVE (obviamente siempre en Simple Past):
Luciana didn't use to go out very often when she was single(Luciana no sola salir con

MUST BE
Analiza cuidadosamente esta situacin-ejemplo:
Monica is a very good tennis player, and not many players beat
her. But yesterday she played against Bill and Bill won. So,
Bill must be a very good player (otherwise he wouldn't have won).
Ms ejemplos:
1) Lucy, you've been traveling all day. You must be tired.
(= I am sure that you are tired.)
Luca, has estado viajando todo el da. Debes estar cansada.
2) Your exams are next week. You must be studying very hard right now.
(= I am sure that you are studying.)
Tus exmenes son la semana prxima. Debes estar estudiando mucho ahora.
3) Manuel knows a lot about films. He must like to go to the movies.
(= I am sure he likes to go to the movies.)
CAN'T BE
You've just had dinner. You can't be hungry already.
(= It is impossible that you are hungry.)
Acabas de cenar. No es posible que ya tengas hambre.
(= Es imposible que tengas hambre).
Analiza ahora estas 4 estructuras gramaticales con MUST BE y CAN'T BE:
You/he/they must be thirsty/hungry, etc.
(Debes tener/Debe tener/Deben tener sed/hambre, etc).
You/he/they can't be thirsty/hungry, etc.
You/he/they must be studying/waiting/coming, etc.
(Debes estar/Debe estar/Deben estar estudiando, esperando, por venir, etc).
We went to Roy's house last night and rang the doorbell. There was no answer.
He must have gone out (otherwise he would have answered).
Ms ejemplos:
1) The phone rang, but I didn't hear it. I must have been asleep.
Son el telfono pero no lo oi. Deb haberme quedado dormido.
2) I made a lot of noise when I came home. You must have heard me.
Hice mucho ruido cuando llegu a casa. Debes haberme odo.
3) She passed me on the street without speaking. She can't have
seen me.
No me debe haber visto.

Ejemplos: The government should put more
buses and subway lines, El gobierno debera (tendra que) poner ms
autobuses y lneas de subterrneo. (Y juro que no estoy pensando en
Argentina!!).
Ejemplos: I think that the
government should put more buses and subway lines, Pienso que (Creo que)
subterrneo. (Otra vez!!); Do you think OM Personal should be free?,

REGLAS BASICAS:
c) No utilices WILL en lugar de COULD o WOULD.
EJEMPLOS:
INCORRECT
I wish that I received this letter before the office closed.

I wish that I had received this letter before the office closed.
I wish that I could have received this letter before the office closed.
I wish that I would have received this letter before the office closed.

modernas.

VERBOS MODALES
MUST /mst/ - TO HAVE TO /tu jv t/ (deber, tener que)
oraciones interrogativas y negativas se construyen sin el auxiliar do: Must you go? (Tienes
que irte?). Must slo tiene la forma del presente: I must leave early (Tengo que salir
temprano). Cuando necesitamos otras formas verbales usamos to have to: He will have to
determinado comportamiento: The children must be back by four (Los chicos tienen que
volver a las cuatro); I must stop smoking (Tengo que dejar de fumar). Cuando las rdenes so
impuestas por un agente externo (una ley, una regla, etc.) usamos to have to: The doctor
says I have to stop smoking (El mdico dice que tengo que dejar de fumar).
En negativo, must not o mustn't expresan una prohibicin:
You mustn't open other people's post (No debes abrir la correspondencia de otras
personas).
una ausencia de obligacin: You don't have to go if you don't want to (No tienes que ir si no
quieres)

VERBOS MODALES
Los siguientes verbos son auxiliares modales:
CAN COULD MIGHT MUST SHALL SHOULD WILL WOULD.
Los verbos modales comparten ciertas caractersticas. Observa:
INFINITIVO SIN "TO".
She can drive. Ella puede (sabe) conducir.
I must get my hair cut. Debo hacerme cortar el pelo.
2. Con estos verbos no se usa DO ni DOES para el interrogativo.
Can Lucy sing in French? Puede (sabe) cantar Lucy en francs?
Should I go home now? Debera irme a casa ahora?
Simplemente se agrega NOT o N'T.
I would not (wouldn't) like to be a teacher. No me gustara ser maestro/a.
You must not (mustn't) steal. No debes robar.
Para el negativo con WILL (will + not) se prefiere usar la contraccin WON'T.
It won't rain tomorrow. No llover maana.
a las tres terceras personas del singular (he, she, it).
He can dance very well. l puede (sabe) bailar muy bien.
She should try harder. Ella debera esforzarse ms.
It will rain very soon. Llover muy pronto.
futuro. CAN es el nico modal que tiene pasado directo = COULD (pude, pudo,
poda, saba). Observa:
I could swim when I was three. Yo poda (saba) nadar cuando tena tres aos.
EXPRESANDO OBLIGACION
Observa las siguientes oraciones:
- We have to know daily what the prices are.
- Every day Robinson has to fax his opinion on the politics.
modales:
OBLIGACION
o NECESIDAD
OBLIGACION MODERADA
o CONSEJO
AUSENCIA DE OBLIGACION
o NECESIDAD
have to
should / shouldn't
don't have to
must / mustn't

needn't
need to
don't need to
I have to attend a meeting. (The boss has asked me to attend the meeting).
negativas de must y have to:
You mustn't tell Monica about this. (Don't tell her)
You don't have to tell Lisa. (You can tell her if you want to, but it isn't
necessary)
No tienes que comentrselo a Lisa. (Puedes comentrselo si lo deseas, pero
no es necesario).
