Interactors of Holy Spirit launch 2015-16 peermentoring program to assist their schoolmates improve academic performance
One of the major service projects planned
by the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School for Rotary Year 20152016 is Peer Mentoring.
The first mentoring class was conducted on
July 25, 2015 with ten (10) Grade 7 students who had been referred by their advisers as having difficulties in certain subjects.
The students were given review lessons in
Math, Science and English by Grade 7 Interactors assisted by senior Interactors
from Grades 9 and 10.
On August 1, 2015, the second mentoring
class was conducted, this time attended by
twenty (20) Grade 7 students. Their mentors came well-prepared with posters and
quiz notes. The students with the highest
scores were given tokens by the mentors.
Both mentors and students partook of
snacks provided by RCHS.
The peer mentoring or tutoring classes are
being scheduled two (2) weeks before and
two (2) weeks after the students periodical
examinations (the first one slated week of
August 3, 2015). These classes will be
held in August 2015, October 2015 and
January 2016.
During the first two mentoring classes, officers of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School led by President Jannelle Larbio were grouped to provide assistance to the junior mentors depending on
their academic or subject proficiency. They
will be monitoring the progress of the students tutored to ensure that they keep up to
speed with their class.
Youth Service Chair PP Marcia Salvador
has been providing guidance to the Interactors in this on-going program.

some 33 participants last July 27 & 28, 2015
at Pepetons Grill.
The participants who passed the assessment
done by TESDA were given certificates and
licenses acknowledged both here and abroad
that is valid for 5 years.
PP Linda Palattao, RCHS Livelihood committee chair, gave the inspirational message during the awarding of certificates. Present during the closing ceremonies were Rtn JR Delgra, WCP Angel E. Castro and PP Linda
Palattao.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
District 3780, Quezon City
Be Inspired, Be Involved, Be Innovative
(Inspirational message delivered by District Youth Service Chair PP Benjamin Tan Alonzo, MD, during the Joint Induction of the Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy
Spirit last 26 July 2015 at the Don Enrique Heights Clubhouse)

President Angel Castro, Youth

Service Chair PP Marcia Salvador,
fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, Guests, Ladies and
Gentlemen,
Good Afternoon! I would like to
take this opportunity to commend
the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit for
being awarded as the Most Outstanding Club in Youth Service for
the past 2 years. Your labor is not
in vain. When you invest your time, talent and treasure on our
youth, you also invest in the future of your Rotary Club and in the
future of our country as well. And I think unti-unti nyo ng nakikita
yan some of your Interactors are already Rotaractors and who
knows, 5 to 10 years from now, your Rotaractors will be your fellow Rotarians. It happened in our club and in other clubs who
sponsored Rotaract Clubs, it will surely happen to you as well.
It is such a pleasure to be with you all on the occasion of your
Joint Induction. Rotaractors and Interactors, your sponsoring Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit is so proud of you. They
are all praises when it comes to the kind of service you extend
and they are very glad that all of you are their partners in service.
For that, give yourselves a round of applause.
Just a few pointers that I hope youll
always remember.
Since this is a Joint Rotaract and Interact Induction I want you to
remember 4Rs and 3Is. Makinig kayong mabuti. May prize
mamaya ang makakapagsabi sakin ng 4Rs and 3Is.
What are the 4 Rs you will learn or gain in this organization? First
R is Respect. In order to get respect, you have to give it and not
just to the elders and the higher-ups, but to everyone. You respect
the opinion of other people. Listening is one way of showing you
are respecting the person. Lalo na ngayon, sometimes we are too
involved with our cellphone, na when someone is talking to us, we
dont look at the person and listen. Oo lang ng oo minsan kasi
busy sa Clash of Clans pero pag tinanong mo kung naintindihan
yung sinabi, hindi pala. So guys, do you understand what Im trying to tell you about respect? Good! Diba masarap kapag pinakikinggan ka?. And this also avoids misunderstanding kase when
you are really paying attention, you can clarify or validate if tama
ba pagkakaintindi mo.

we do things around here? Rituals is about how we do things.

What makes us Rotary or Rotaract or Interact is on the way we do
things. The way we do our induction, our District Assembly, District Conference, our regular meetings, fellowships and our projects is what makes us stand out and different from other organizations. Also, there are certain protocols that we follow in Rotary
and youll eventually realize later on that these protocols were put
into place so that things will be orderly. Standards and protocols
are the guidelines of operation in communication or in a formal
setting. Nowadays the ability to interact quickly and efficiently is
considered the cornerstone of any organization or business. Pero
hayaan na natin ang inyong District Secretary to explain to you
more about protocols.
Let me move on to the last R. Relationship. The most important
R that youll develop is Relationship. In Rotaract and Interact,
youll build relationships that are meant to last. In Rotary, we are
not just an organization, we are a family. We dont believe in dispensable relationships. In this family we will meet mentors or big
brothers and big sisters who can offer us valuable pieces of advice. We will also meet people with the same interests or hobbies,
and you know what they say about birds with the same feathers...
yes, they fly together. And if youre blessed, just like my daughter
who is a former Rotaractor, you might find your lifetime partner
here. Pero saka na yon, mga bata pa kayo. Ika nga nila, study first
before love. So those are my 4Rs Respect, Responsibility, Rituals and Relationships.
Ano naman ang 3 Is that you need to develop in order to grow in
this organization? First Be Inspired. Do things passionately and
when I say passionately I mean with energy, enthusiasm and
positivity. You should not be hindered by your status in life, your
circumstances, and your lack in experience or wisdom. Instead be
inspired by the lives of those people who have humble beginnings. If they can rise above the challenges of poverty, dysfunctional family, some wrong decisions, surely you can also do that.
Do not limit yourself. When you dream, dream big not just for
yourself but for the people you love and the people that you want
to help.
Second Be Involved. Dont just be a fence sitter or a wallflower.
We are all meant to shine so go out there, and dont be afraid to
do the dirty job. Willingly extend your helping hands, not just to
the Rotarians, but more importantly, to those poverty-stricken
communities who need help. Let me borrow the words of the activists, Kung hindi tayo, sino? Kung hindi ngayon, kailan? Its better when everyone is involved and when we all work together.

Second is Responsibility. You will have a sense of responsibility

when you are involved in Rotaract or Interact. When you are working on a project, there will be tasks assigned to you and you need
to be responsible and reliable enough to finish it. Rotaract and
Interact will keep you busy with worthwhile activities and events.

And lastly Be Innovative. In this day and age, we need to think

outside of the box. Hindi pwede yung ituloy lang natin ito para
madali. If you think you can improve something, be brave enough
to voice it out and suggest. Initiate change and be resourceful.
Introduce and implement new ideas. When there are obstacles
and challenges, thats actually the time to be creative and create
solutions. But do not be afraid to make mistakes knowing that next
time you will be able to get it right.

Third is Rituals. O baka sabihin nyo, ano ba tong nasalihan ko,

may ritwal? Let me assure you that our rituals are not something
weird or scary. Have you heard about the statement, That is how

So those are my 3 Is. Be inspired, be involved and be innovative.

To make it short, Be a gift to the world! Thank you and Mabuhay
ang Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs of Holy Spirit.

Educational assistance grant to cover monthly expenses of one

Holy Spirit beneficiary starts as school year in the University of the
Philippines begins

As PP Marcia Salvador watches, Alyan Silos receives

from FCP Dr Eui Bong Jung an educational assistance
grant to help defray her expenses for the next 3 months.
The monthly stipend is being provided by Atty Park and
members of his law firm in Korea. FCP Atty Park is a
member of RC Sae Gwangju D3710, sister club of Holy
Spirit in Korea.
From a less fortunate family, Alyan graduated last March
2015 at the top of her class with the distinct honor of
Valedictorian of the Holy Spirit National High School.

She is now taking up BS Chemistry at the University of

the Philippines in Diliman QC. A former Interactor, Alyan
is now a member of the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit.
The other equally outstanding young lady in the picture is
Resha Avelino, immediate past president of the Interact
Club of Holy Spirit National High School and of the Supreme Student Government (SSG) of the school with enrolment of over 4,000. Resha is now a member of the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit, too.

Holy Spirit members also continue to provide scholarships and educational assistance to deserving youth, such as the following for example:

Free tuition scholarships for deserving students enrolled in 2-year courses such as computer programming at Central Institute of Technology. Honorary RCHS member PP Edmund Chiu has started to sponsor four (4) scholars.
Four-year college scholarship grant covering tuition, matriculation & miscellaneous fees, books and school supplies provided by PP Marcia Salvador. A Rotaractor of Holy Spirit taking up BS HRM has been enjoying this scholarship since SY 2012-13.
Sponsorship by BCP Marites Nepomuceno of eight (8) needy children through the World Vision Philippines, a
Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to reach their full
potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice and help communities become self-sufficient.

Rotary Information - AUGUST 2015 MESSAGES FROM ROTARY LEADERS

RI Presidents August 2015 Message

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging
on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for
godt: "Only the best is good enough." Today, Christiansen is remembered as the
inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks
beloved by children around the world. But
in the early days of the Lego company, its
signature product was a wooden duck
one built to the highest standards, out of
aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego's company history tells how Christiansen used his
ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:
One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: "It's
been a good day today, Dad. We've earned a little more." "Oh,"
said Dad, "what do you mean?" "Well, I've just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it's for the Co-op,
I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money."
He looked at me in dismay. "Godtfred, fetch those boxes back.
Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You're
not going to bed until the work's done and you'll do it all on
your own." There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson
for me about what quality meant.
Today, Lego's quality standards are legendary, and its products
are the most popular toys in the world: Lego pieces outnumber
humans 86 to 1.
We all recognize that this success stems directly from Lego's
business practices its insistence on quality, efficiency, and innovation. I compare this with our efforts in governance and accountability in Rotary, and realize that sometimes we fall short of
the standards expected.
The leaders at the Rotary International, zone, district, and club
levels have to maintain the highest standards in governance.
The RI president and directors must serve the membership in a
meaningful manner; zone leaders must deliver on the investment
Rotary makes in them; district leaders must provide dynamic
leadership in the district and focus on transparency in accounting
and timely reporting of financials; and club leaders must adhere
to proper reporting functions and get their clubs onto Rotary Club
Central.
Just as Christiansen refused to consider sending a lesser product to any of his clients, so should we refuse to consider giving a
lesser effort to any of our work. We must always demand the
best of ourselves in our professional lives, and especially in
our Rotary work.
For in Rotary, what is our product? It is not wooden ducks or
plastic bricks. It is education, water, health, and peace. It is
hope, and it is life itself. For this work, only our best is good
enough. I ask you all to remember this and to do your very
best to Be a Gift to the World.

K. R. Ravi RAVINDRAN
President 2015-16

Foundation Chairmans August 2015 Message

The Rotary Foundation has traditionally
used a few annual goals to guide its
planning for the next Rotary year. However, there is a more comprehensive
plan in place for the current Rotary
year. At their October 2014 meeting,
the Trustees utilized the spirit of the RI
strategic plan by approving four priorities to stay in place for the next three
years:
End polio, now and forever.
Strengthen Rotarians' knowledge, engagement, and financial support of The Rotary Foundation.
Increase the quality and impact of Rotary's humanitarian
service effort through Foundation grants and the six
areas of focus.
Enhance the image and awareness of the Foundation's
record of achievements, particularly the success of
PolioPlus and its 100-year record of doing good in the
world.
In addition to the agreed four priorities for the next three
years, the Trustees also approved four measurable goals
for each of the priorities. Therefore, we now have 16
measurable goals to guide our efforts. The goals can be
changed each year as progress is made on achievement
of the priorities, but for the current year our course is set
and for the first time, it is measurable!
I will be sharing some of the goals with you in future editions, but it is worth noting that the advent of measurable
goals for the Foundation came at a propitious time. RI
President K.R. Ravindran is a proponent of key performance indicators (KPIs) for the work of Rotarians in leadership positions, and the new measurable goals made it
much easier to develop some KPIs for our regional Rotary
Foundation coordinators and endowment/major gift advisers. The KPIs are still an experiment, and they will need
refinement and development, but they are a step in the
right direction as we try to take a longer look ahead each
year!

Rotary News - NO WILD POLIO CASE IN NIGERIA FOR ONE YEAR

Where in the world is NIGERIA ?

Population - about 175 million.
Has the 7th largest population in the world.
LAGOS is the biggest city with a population of
15 million.
Today, 24 July 2015, marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the
country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern
state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks,
the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving
just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.
Every Rotarian in the world should be proud of this
achievement, says Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran. We made history. We have set Africa on course for
a polio-free future. But we have not yet reached our goal of
a polio-free world. Raising funds and awareness and advocating with your government are more crucial than ever.
Progress in Nigeria has come from many measures, including strong domestic and international financing, the commitment of thousands of health workers, and new strategies
that reached children who had not been immunized earlier
because of a lack of security in the northern states.
Rotarys commitment has been the number one reason for
the recent success in Nigeria, says Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair
of Rotarys Nigeria PolioPlus Committee. We have infected
political leaders with this commitment. The government has
demonstrated this with political support and financial and
human resources. And
that went down the line
from the federal level, to
the state, to the local
governments.
Nigeria has increased
its domestic funding for
polio eradication almost
every year since 2012
and has allocated $80

million for the effort this year.

Funsho also applauds religious leaders who championed
the vaccination efforts to families in their communities.
Despite the historic gains in Nigeria, health experts are cautious about declaring victory. Funsho says the Global Polio
Eradication Initative partners must strengthen routine immunization especially in hard-to-reach areas, in addition to
boosting sensitive surveillance to prevent resurgence of the
disease. If no new cases are reported in the next two years,
Nigeria, along with the entire Africa region, will be certified
polio-free.
The virus can be introduced from anywhere where it is still
endemic, particularly now in Afghanistan and Pakistan, into
areas that havent had polio in years, Funsho says. It is
important we keep the immunity level in Nigeria to at least
90 percent.
For instance, Syria experienced a sudden outbreak of the
disease when 35 cases were reported in December 2013.
None had been reported there since 1999. Immunizations
become imperative for history not to repeat itself in Nigeria,
says Funsho.
In June, Rotary announced $19 million in grants for continued polio eradication activities in Africa, including almost
$10 million for Nigeria. Since 1985, when Rotary launched
PolioPlus, the program that supports the organizations polio
eradication efforts, its worldwide monetary contributions to
the cause have exceeded $1.4 billion.
Weve come a long way and have never been so close to
eradicating polio in Nigeria and around the world, but its not
a time to fully celebrate, says Funsho. We have some grueling years ahead of us before WHO can certify Nigeria and
Africa polio-free.
