The information in this brochure is based on many decades of experience in the manufacture and application of sealing
and bearing systems. However, unknown parameters and conditions may restrict general statements during usage. It is
vital that customers satisfy themselves as to the suitability of individual products through adequate testing. For this reason,
and due to the wide range of applications of our products, Busak+Shamban can accept no liability as to the suitability or
correctness of our recommendations in individual cases.
The application limits for pressure, temperature and speed given in this catalogue are maximum values determined in the
laboratory. During practical applications it should be remembered that due to the interaction of the operating parameters,
the maximum values must be set correspondingly lower. For exceptional operating conditions, please contact your
Busak+Shamban representative.
This edition supersedes all previous brochures.

Scrapers

Choice of the Scraper Element

Scrapers are installed in hydraulic cylinders to scrape any
dirt, foreign particles, chips, moisture, etc. from the piston
rods as they are retracted into the system, thus preventing
contamination of the hydraulic medium which would
otherwise result in damage to wear rings, seals and other
components.
Single and double-acting wiper scrapers can be used,
depending on the application and the seal system. They
differ quite distinctly in their function:
Single-acting scrapers are designed to keep out contamination from the outside. Double-acting scrapers have the
additional function of optimising the seal system and
scraping off the existing residual fluid film thickness to
avoid any external leakage. They thus form part of a functional unit and must therefore be seen in combination with
the seals.

Note on Ordering
All multi-element standard scrapers are generally supplied
as a complete set. The supply includes the scraper and the
matching energizing element. The O-Ring does not have
to be ordered separately. It is also possible, however, to use
other O-Ring materials from our O-Ring Catalogue.
In this case, please order the scraper and O-Ring separately. We will quote you the sizes of the O-Ring on request.
When ordering the scraper separately, it is then not necessary to quote the O-Ring material code in the Order No.
shown in the ordering examples on pages 10, 14 and 18.
Older designs of scrapers no longer contained in this catalogue naturally continue to be available. For all new
applications, however, we recommend the use of the
scraper types and preferred sizes (DIN/ISO series, wherever possible) listed in the catalogue.

In order to satisfy the different technical and economic

demands, Busak+Shamban has developed a complete
range of scrapers with optimised geometries made from
high-quality materials.

Other material combinations, special designs and any

intermediate sizes of TurconR materials up to 2.500 mm
diameter can be developed and supplied for special
applications, provided there is sufficient demand.

Before selecting the scraper and the material, it is essential

to know all the desired functional parameters. Table I on
pages 4 and 5 allows an initial selection of the scraper
type and material to be made according to the specific
requirements of the application.

The sizes contained in this catalogue are generally available from stock and can be supplied at short notice. We
reserve the right to modify our article structure without
prior notice.

The second column of the table contains the number of the

page on which further general information together with
specific design and installation instructions for the particular scraper type and materials (or material combinations
with multi-element scrapers, e.g. TurconR ExcluderR) can
be found.
The ABCD analysis shown on page 5 is based on a comparison of the different scraper types and materials. It is
intended to serve as an aid to selection. All scrapers satisfy
the requirements shown in their technical data and
application recommendations.
The final choice of scraper type and material must also
take account of the detailed information on the individual
scraper type elements.
Please do not hesitate to contact our Technical Department for further information on specific applications and
special technical questions.

Quality Criteria
The cost-effective use of seals is essentially influenced by
the definition of quality criteria. The seals manufactured
by Busak+Shamban are continuously monitored
according to strict quality standards from the material
acquisition through to their delivery.
Certification of our production works in accordance with
standard EN ISO 9000 series meets the specific demands
on quality control and management in purchasing,
production and marketing to assure the quality of our
products.
Our quality policy is controlled and implemented
continuously via a structure and procedural organisation
and in the form of working and testing instructions in all
strategic and operative sectors.
Quality planning begins with the careful choice of the raw
materials, the compliance with the specified formulations,
manufacturing methods and the regular control of the
process parameters. This continuous monitoring of all the
phases of production helps to ensure the constant high
quality of our products.
All tests on materials and guide elements are performed
according to the relevant international standards and test
regulations, such as e.g. the random sample testing in
accordance with ISO 2859, part 1 or MIL-STD-105E or
the testing of O-Rings in accordance with ISO 3601.
Our sealing materials are produced free of chlorofluorinated
hydrocarbons and carcinogenic elements.
The 10th digit of our article number is defined as a quality
characteristic. A hyphen in this position confirms the
standard quality and the compliance with all the
information given in this catalogue on the quality and
condition of the products. Customer-specific demands
are indicated and monitored with other characters in this
position.

The characteristics most frequently used to describe the

surface microfinish Ra, Rz and Rmax are defined in ISO
4287/1. These characteristics alone, however, are not
sufficient for assessing the suitability in seal engineering.
In addition, the material contact area Mr (previously percentage contact area tp) in accordance with ISO 4287/1
should be demanded. The material contact area is determined by the specific profile form. This in turn is directly
dependent on the machining process employed.
Further information on this can be found in our catalogues
Piston Seals and Rod Seals.
Busak+Shamban recommends that the following surface
finishes be observed:

The material contact area Mr should be approx. 50 to

70%, determined at a cut depth c = 0.25 x Rz, relative to
a reference line of Cref. 5%.
Groove Distance
When installing scrapers in conjunction with rod seals with
return delivery effect such as TurconR StepsealR K, we
recommend the following positioning:
- Distance between seal groove and scraper groove L
should exceed groove depth X
- Oil reservoir to collect the oil to be returned as shown
in Figure 1.

Scores, scratches, pores, concentric or spiral machining

marks are not permitted. Ideally dynamic sealing surfaces
should be polished spiral-free.

ca. 3 mm
L

As a rule, the surface finish is dictated by the requirements

of the piston rod seals used. For scrapers, the functional
reliability and service life also depend to a very great
extent on the quality and surface finish of the sealing surface to be sealed.

Scrapers

Installation Instructions
The following points should be observed before installation of the scrapers:
- Check whether the piston rod has a lead-in chamfer
- Deburr and chamfer or round sharp edges, cover the
tips of screw threads
- Remove machining residues such as chips, dirt and
other foreign particles and carefully clean all parts
- The scrapers can be installed more easily if they are
greased or oiled. Attention must be paid to the compatibility of the scraper materials with these lubricants.
Use only grease without solid additives (e.g. molybdenum disulphide or zinc sulphide).
- Use no sharp-edged installation tools
- We recommend that the scrapers be covered when
painting the cylinders.
Further installation instructions can be found under the
descriptions of the individual scraper types.

Storage
(The notes in italics only apply to elastomeric sealing
materials)
Seals and bearings are often stored as spare parts for
prolonged periods. With a few simple precautions, the
shelf life of these products can be considerably
lengthened.
Seals and bearings should be stored where they are safe
from damage by external influences. Deformation, in
particular, should be avoided during storage.
Under the influence of various external factors e.g. heat,
moisture, light, oxygen, ozone and as a result of contact
with liquid media, the properties of certain materials may
change. For example, deformation, ageing and
weathering can cause deterioration of the original
mechanical and physical properties, depending on the
material and shape of the parts.
Fundamental instructions on storage, cleaning and
maintenance of elastomer seal elements are described in
international standards, such as:
Storage of rubber products: DIN 7716/BS 3F68:1977
Maximum age limitation:

MIL-HDBK-695C or
MIL-STD-1523A or
DIN 9088

The individual guidelines give several recommendations

for the shelf life of elastomers, depending on the material
classes.

Busak+ Shamban
8

The following guidelines should be observed to maintain

the optimum physical and chemical properties of the
parts:
Heat
The ideal temperature for storage is between +5C/41F
and +25C/77F. Direct contact with heaters should be
avoided.
Moisture
Parts may be stored dry under normal atmospheric
conditions (65% rel. moisture 10).
Weathering
To protect them against damage, seals and bearings
should be kept in the original sealed packaging.
Ozone
Destruction of certain elastomeric sealing materials due to
ozone can be caused by the following machines and
equipment:
- Mercury discharge lamps
- High voltage equipment
- Electric motors
- Electric spark sources or discharges.

Turcon ExcluderR 2

Turcon ExcluderR 2
The TurconR ExcluderR 2 is a double-acting scraper with
two geometrically different scraper lips which are installed
back-to-back. ExcluderR 2 is always installed together
with an elastic O-Ring in one groove. The scraper function
is performed by the ExcluderR 2. The O-Ring maintains
the pressure of the scraper lips against the sliding surface
and can compensate any deflections of the piston rod.

Material No. N 7038

ExcluderR 2 has a double function:

- To scrape contaminants from the retracting piston rod
and thus to protect the system from soiling, and
- To hold back the residual oil film on the extending piston
rod on the medium side.
ExcluderR 2 are used in conjunction with the rod seal
TurconR StepsealR K, i.e. seals with hydrodynamic backpumping function.
Advantages
- Outstanding sliding properties
- Stick-slip-free, no sticking
- Can compensate for relatively large deflections of the
piston rod or plunger
- Space-saving construction
- Very good scraping effect against outside contaminants, even with firmly adhered dirt, etc.

For specific applications, other material combinations as

listed in Table II, page 6 may also be used.
Design and Installation Instructions
ExcluderR 2 scrapers can be installed in split and closed
grooves (installation dimensions, see table V, page 10).
Installation in closed grooves is dependent on the rod
diameter, profile cross-section of the scraper and on the
cord cross-section of the corresponding O-Ring, see Table
IV.

TurconR ExcluderR 5

TurconR ExcluderR 5*
Description
The TurconR ExcluderR 5 is a patented double-acting
scraper with two geometrically different scraper lips which
are installed back-to-back. The scraper is installed
together with an O-Ring as elastic energizing element in
one groove. The scraper function is performed by the
ExcluderR 5. The O-Ring maintains the pressure of the
scraper lips against the sliding surface and can compensate any deflections of the piston rod.

Technical Data
Speed:

15 m/s for TurconR materials

2 m/s for ZurconR materials
with reciprocating movements

Temperature:

-54 C to +200 C (TurconR)

-30 C to +110 C (ZurconR)

Media:

Mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids,

flame retardant hydraulic fluids,
environmentally safe hydraulic fluids
(bio-oils), water, air and others,
depending on the O-Ring material
(see Table II, page 6)

O-Ring
TurconR scraper ring

Materials
The following material combination has proven effective
for most applications:
ExcluderR 5:

TurconR T46

O-Ring:

Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber

NBR, 70 Shore A
Material No. N 7038

Figure 4 TurconR ExcluderR 5

ExcluderR 5 has a double function:
- To scrape contaminants from the retracting piston rod
and thus to protect the system from soiling, and
- To hold back the residual oil film on the extending piston
rod on the medium side.
ExcluderR 5 are preferably used in conjunction with our
rod seals TurconR StepsealR K, i.e. seals with a hydrodynamic back-pumping function. In contrast to the ExcluderR 2,
they are used particularly for heavy-duty applications such
as in construction machinery, presses, etc.
Advantages
- Outstanding sliding properties
- Stick-slip-free, no sticking
- Tough scraper for heavy-duty operation
- Can compensate for relatively large deflections of the
piston rod or plunger
- Very good scraping effect even against firmly adhered
dirt, etc.
- Very good scraping effect from the inside against the
residual oil film adhering to the surface of the piston
rod
- Identical installation with that of the ZurconR ExcluderR
500
- Very high resistance to hydraulic media
- Available for all diameters up to 2.500 mm

For specific applications, other material combinations as

listed in Table II, page 6 may also be used.
Design and Installation Instructions
ExcluderR 5 scrapers can be installed in split and closed
grooves (installation dimensions, see table VIII, page 14).
Installation in closed grooves is dependent on the rod
diameter, profile cross-section of the scraper and on the
cross-section of the corresponding O-Ring, see Table VII.

Scraper DA 22

Scraper DA 22
Description

Technical Data

The scraper DA 22 is a double-acting polyurethane

scraper for installation in grooves to ISO 6195, Type C.

Pressure

Significant improvements are achieved with respect to the

profile geometry and material used compared with conventional elastomeric scrapers.

Scraper side:Atmospheric pressure

Seal side:

Pressures up to 2 MPa (20 bar)

a relief bore must be provided with
higher pressures

Speed:

Up to 1 m/s with
reciprocating movements

Temperature:

-35 C to +100 C

Media:

Mineral oils and greases, flame

retardant hydraulic fluids, etc.
see Table II, page 6.

Material
The scraper is manufactured with high precision from
high-grade polyester/polyurethane.
Figure 8 Scraper DA 22

Material:

The scraper lip is designed in such a way that it reliably

scrapes off the dirt but leaves a residual oil film on the rod
which is required for correct operation. The radial
squeeze is sufficient to reliably remove particles, dust and
water.

Hardness, Shore A: 93 5, measured on test specimen

The scraping lip facing inwards is designed such that it

assumes a sealing function even under pressure. The
static seal is achieved by a tight radial fit between the
scraper body and the groove.
The scraper is preferably used in conjunction with our rod
seals TurconR StepsealR K, i.e. seals with a hydrodynamic
back-pumping function.
Advantages
- Good scraping effect, even with firmly adhering dirt
- Wear resistant, long service life
- Retaining and return delivery function for residual oil
- Reduced friction compared to elastomer materials
- Standard element for standardized installation grooves

Scraper ASW

Scraper ASW
Description

Use in Bio-Oils

The scraper ASW is a single-acting polyurethane scraper.

The use of bio-oils in conjunction with polyurethane is subject to certain limit values. WUAQ3 is suitable for use with
vegetable oils (HETG) up to approx. +80C. In polyalkylene glycols (HEPG), the use is limited after testing to +60C.
Please contact us before using the seals with synthetic ester
oils (HEES).
Material
The standard material is a highly wear resistant polyurethane with good cold flexibility.
Standard material: Polyurethane, 93 Shore A
Material No. WUAQ3

Figure 12 Scraper ASW

The special feature of this scraper is an additional supporting bead on the inner surface. It prevents tilting or twisting
of the scraper in the groove. At the same time this support
improves the firm seating in the groove, thus preventing the
penetration of impurities via the back of the scraper. This
represents a technical improvement compared with similar
scraper types.
Advantages
- Simple groove design
- Very good scraping effect, wear resistant
- No tilting or twisting in the groove
- Simple installation
- Flush fitting with the outer surface

The scraper SA is a mould-vulcanised single-acting elastomer scraper. It is vulcanised into a metal race at the outer
circumference. The scraper can thus be fitted by pressing
into an open groove. The metal race is ground around its
outer circumference. In conjunction with the scraper oversize, an exact fit is obtained in the housing.

Materials
Standard material of metric size range
Inner scraper lip:

Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber,

NBR, 70 Shore A
Code N7

Metal housing:

Sheet metal 1.0204 (AISI 1008)

or similar
Code M

Outer scraper lip:

Brass
Code S

Figure 18 Metal scraper

The metal scraper lip is designed to remove firmly adhering soiling and ice particles. The secondary lip of elastomer material enhances the overall scraping effect, i.e. fine
sand grains, water and similar foreign matter are reliably
scraped off. Both scraper lips have a smaller diameter
than the nominal diameter of the piston rod, thus ensuring
a tight fit of the scraper lips. The metallic lip is guided flexibly in radial direction and can easily follow any possible
deflections of the piston rod.

Standard material of imperial size range

Inner scraper lip:

Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber,

NBR, 80 Shore A
Code N8

Metal housing:

Sheet metal 1.0204 (AISI 1008)

or similar
Code M

Outer scraper lip:

Brass
Code S

The metal scraper is available in a metric and an imperial

(inch) size range.
Advantages
- Very good scraping effect, even with firmly adhering
dirt, e.g. mud, ice

Other materials for scraper lips and housing available on

request.

- Very abrasion resistant

- Tight fit in the groove due to the metal case
- Easy installation in open grooves
