Silence is the perennial source of all expressions

and it is the secret harmony of the nature. All sounds,
all expressions, all languages take form from silence,
are maintained in it and merge
into it alone. Silence is a state of
mind in complete repose, in the
height of emotions. Where words
fail, silence takes over. It is the
medium through which the
Supreme communicates with the
cosmos.
Compared to the depth and
the height silence can reach, all
the other means and ways of
expression are but shallow -plumbing the most superficial
layers of human personality, the
sense and the sense objects. The
more we realize its worth, the
deeper it enfolds us in its
profundity.
But hardly do we catch this
silence in its beauty in our busy
workday life just as we hardly
pause to recognize the unifying
whiteness in the multitude of
colours around us. Still, often unknown to us, it
descends on us bringing peace and calm to our
troubled minds, quietening the mind and raising it to
ineffable heights of aesthetic experience. The mind of
man suddenly expands in silence bringing him in
direct communion with the beauty within.

Why this transformation? Because silence is the true nature of the mind. In the deepest
core of our mind which we seldom have the time or inclination to delve into, there exists
nothing but absolute silence devoid of all traces of disturbances. It is to regain this true
nature that the mind frets and fumes. All the cry in the modern world against noise
pollution is nothing but the natural yearning of man for the soothing balm of silence. All
upasanas and yogic sadhanas culminate in teaching man to recognize the Silence within, to
achieve that state of peace and happiness when the minds ever fluttering wings will be
softly folded to glide slowly into SILENCE. The Pranava explains it as transcending the three
states of consciousness represented by A-U-M. One who has leant to plunge into its
depths at ones free will mark that one. He walks like a king among men.

Learning Times
"I dedicate this book to a child who is studying in class 12. Her
name is Snehal Thakkar. On 11 April 2002, when I reached Anand
by road in the evening, it was under curfew following communal
disturbances. The next day, at the Anandalaya High School, while
talking to the students, a question came up: `Who is our enemy?'
There were many answers, but the one we all agreed was correct
came from her: `Our enemy is poverty'". wrote Dr. Kalam, in
the beginning of his book Ignited Minds. Prayers to the departed soul and may the Force be with
us.
The poverty the child speaks of cannot be money it has to be knowledge. If a person is poor
in the wealth of knowledge, all other forms of wealth are insignificant, after all it is only with
knowledge that one can understand the value of wealth. There are many programs and activities
on imparting education, although it is not necessary that they ensure knowledge is shared.
A popular art that needs immediate revival is Story Telling. Story telling mostly or always
happens in the regional language. Story telling was always an integral part of our culture, however
the invasion of the idiot box and hordes of cable channels, have eroded into the minds of
children, who instead of learning about their own culture live in a bubble formed by the utopian
stories of foreign culture. The Jataka Tales, Hitopadesha, and the likes of them impart knowledge,
bring us closer to nature, teaches ahimsa, and above all develops the humane in the human being.

Satyameva Jayate nnt

satyamevajayatenntasatyenapanthvitatodevayna
yenkramantyayohyptakmyatra tat satyasyaparamanidhnam.

Truth alone triumphs; not falsehood. Through truth the divine path is spread out by
which the sages whose desires have been completely fulfilled, reach where that supreme
treasure of Truth resides.
Swami Vivekananda echoed this Upanishadic declaration on 12th November 1897
in his famous lecture at Lahore. He was drawing the attention of his audience to the
qualities among religionists based on their idea of God.
In 1947 our great Motherland shook off her yoke of slavery and chose the words of
Satyameva Jayate as part of our national emblem, because it was this conviction that
charged thousands of our countrymen to court arrest, parade before enemy guns and
martyr themselves. On 15th of August, amidst the wild cries of victims, mercilessly
butchered in different parts of our country by the so called truth seekers of various
religions, as our national flag flies atop our holdings, how many of us would remember
the full import of these words which give substance and sanctity to that flag? How many
would care to recall the great sacrifices that led to the unfurling of this beautiful flag on
that memorable day, on 15th August 1947? Do the self-styled custodians of our national
interests realise what it means and promises? Do they understand how truth and justice
are closely interlinked and together add dignity to man, his aspirations, happiness,
freedom and above all peace?
This truth, omniscient and omnipotent, forms the basic support, substratum and
goal of all that exists. Solidarity of all life, spiritual oneness of the entire creation, held
together as a WHOLE by indescribably subtle, yet stronger than the strongest of bonds
that of dharma are all part of that Truth which found actualization in the lives of our
people as truthfulness, justice, love, virtues and so on. In the community it expresses itself
as harmony and peace and in the universe as movement from the transient, material,
finite to indestructible, immutable, immaterial Infinite.
Truth of the matter is that there is no truth in the matter, in the names and forms
and ways in which it tempts the human mind and creates fragmentation and confusion in
his mind.
Whenever the Oneness of Truth is upheld and preserved there abide nobility and
virtue, peace and harmony. Love joins the parts into One. Sacrifices and service hold them

together as One. Realisation of this truth in ones life, in however simple a way, alone can
secure freedom from bondage, fear, hatred, violence and all those evil forces which are
mutilating our national integrity.
We are more than a century away in time from these utterances of the Great
Master, but none the wiser. When would we teach ourselves and our children the great
truth and significance of these words so that we can again face boldly challenges of
fragmentation and destruction?
