A place for kids

Katz JCCs new after-school program
for middle schoolers offers structured
independence, community service

United States Army LTC Ed Croot (right) introduces Cherry Hill resident and Our Community Salutes
founder Kenneth Hartman during a ceremony at Little Mill Country Club in Marlton last Tuesday.

Army bestows highest civilian

honor to Cherry Hill resident
Kenneth Hartman is the founder of Our Community Salutes
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
In 2007, Cherry Hill resident
Kenneth Hartman was serving
on the Cherry Hill Public
Schools Board of Education

when the board was discussing

the high school graduation program.
During these discussions,
Hartman discovered the district
wasnt recognizing students who
were enlisting in the military

after graduation.
This wasnt just something
Cherry Hill didnt do. Hartman
realized there was little being
done for kids choosing to go into
please see HARTMAN, page 6

When the Katz JCC was considering a new after-school program

for kids in grades six to eight, officials didnt want it to be just a
place to do homework or play
games.
My purpose was to create a
program that is not only a cool
program for sixth to eighth
graders, but make it an enticing
and interesting program, said
Kenny Einhorn, director of children and family programs for
Katz JCC.
The JCC ended up creating J
Crew, an after-school program
where middle school students
have the chance to participate in
community service and leadership opportunities as well as give
the students a choice in what activities theyd like to participate
in.
Set to begin in September
when school opens, J Crew is an
after-school program specifically
for kids in middle school. Unlike
the Just 4 Kids after-school program for kids in kindergarten to
fifth grade, J Crew will allow the
kids to have greater independ-

ence and choice in how they want

to spend their time.
Its a lot more flexible program, Einhorn said. Were
going to give the kids structured
independence. If they decide they
want to go play basketball for a
half hour and the gyms open,
thats OK.
A large component of J Crew is
the opportunity to perform community service both on and off
the JCC campus. Kids will have
the chance to participate in community service and Mitzvah projects at the neighboring Saltzman
House for seniors.
Well probably do some projects outside of the JCC such as
meet at the Animal Orphanage,
Einhorn said. Weve also been in
touch with the Jewish Family
and Services program.
One of the goals Einhorn
hopes to achieve with J Crew is to
help the teens become leaders in
their communities. The JCC
plans to have a number of speakers talk to the kids.
We will line up a number of
speakers, such as business leaders, maybe the mayor and other

in our opinion

Smile, youre on camera

State Police outfitting troopers with body cameras; more could come across state
ew Jersey State Police are
spending $1.5 million to outfit
1,000 troopers over the next
nine months with body cameras. Its a
hefty price to pay for technology, but a
very small one when considering the
good it will do.
Body cameras for police have become increasingly popular throughout
the country following police shootings
that made national headlines in places
such as Ferguson, Mo.
Troopers will wear the body cameras on either their shirt or their hat,
and will be required to turn them on
during traffic stops, protests, investigations and while making arrests.

Your thoughts
What do you think about police officers
being outfitted with body cameras? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Acting state Attorney General John

Hoffman said the cameras will act as
an objective witness in police-involved
shootings and other use-of-force incidents.
Some local police departments, such
as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and
even Rowan University, have already
adopted body cameras for their police
forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local departments buy cameras.
Police body cameras are a wonderful
idea, and any state money that can be
used to help local departments outfit
their officers with them is a good
thing.
The safety and security of the people
of New Jersey are of the utmost importance, above all other concerns of
living in our state. Any initiative that
improves that safety and security
while at the same time serving as an
objective judge for citizens and officers is something that should be explored and implemented.

Hartman: Credit should go to grads

HARTMAN

the military instead of college.
When I looked around, it wasnt just
Cherry Hill, but it was across Camden
County and in the state and out of the
state, he said.
Hartman decided something had to be
done. In 2009, he founded Our Community
Salutes, a volunteer-run nonprofit organization holding an annual event to honor
area high school graduates enrolling directly into the military. The entire organization would be funded through donations
from citizens, veterans organizations and
private businesses.
Six years later, Our Community Salutes
now has more than 50 chapters in areas as
close as South Jersey and Philadelphia to
as far away as Puerto Rico and Hawaii. The
chapters have honored hundreds of high
school recruits and have drawn crowds of
as many as 10,000 people.

Last Tuesday, the United States Army

honored Hartman as the recipient of the
Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, the
highest medal the Army awards to citizens. Hartman received the medal for his
work in founding Our Community Salutes
and making it the nationwide organization
it is today.
However, Hartman feels much of the
credit should not go to him, but rather to
the high school graduates who make the
decision to enlist in the military over college and their parents for supporting them.
To Hartman, the Outstanding Civilian
Service Medal is so much more than a oneman honor.

Getting Our Community Salutes going

Less than 1 percent.
That is the percentage listed on the Our
Community Salutes website of high school
graduates who choose to enlist in the military over college. That is the percentage
Hartman was hoping to touch when he
began Our Community Salutes in 2009.
Theres lots of recognition for kids

going off into the service academies,

Hartman said. This is for the less than 1
percent of all high school kids at 17 and 18
who chose to serve their country and, in
some cases, go to war.
To help get OCS off the ground, Hartman reached out to LTC Ron Tuczak, who
was a recruiter for the United States Army.
I said I got this idea, Hartman said. I
dont know where Im going to have it, how
Im going to have it or how Im going to do
it, but can you help.
Tuczak immediately sensed the organization could greatly benefit recruits enlisting in the military.
I thought it would be a positive, being
in the Army and my job was to put people
in the Armed Forces in the New Jersey and
Philadelphia area, Tuczak said. Anytime
we can connect with young people and be a
part of the community, its a better thing.
Tuczak reached out to recruiters from
the other military branches to help gather
a list of seniors OCS could honor at a cereplease see ORGANIZATION, page 14

important individuals in the community, Einhorn said.
Some of J Crews programming will be similar to Just 4
Kids. There will be homework assistance available, kids will have
access to all of the JCCs facilities
and there will also be special
events.
To get the kids to the JCC each
day, transportation is being provided for free from the middle
schools in Cherry Hill, Marlton
and Voorhees as well as Kellman
Brown Academy in Voorhees.
Understanding the number of
after-school activities middle
school students have, Einhorn
said kids dont have to come to J
Crew right after school. Participating kids can be picked up later
in the afternoon if they want to
stay at school for a club or activi-

ty.
Einhorn said there was a lot of
demand for a separate afterschool program for middle school
students. The JCCs goal was to
come up with something to keep
the kids social and active.
Instead of them just going
home and being on the computer,
we wanted to have them in a social setting with other middle
school kids, he said.
Einhorn hopes J Crew not only
gives middle school students
something to do after school, but
also gets them more involved in
their communities.
We have some regular scheduled programs at the JCC for that
age group, he said. So hopefully
theyll want to take part in our
other teen programs.
Registration is now open for J
Crew. For more information on
the program or how to register,

In the meantime, Hartman
wanted to gather donations and
volunteers to help put on the best
event possible.
I literally went around tin cup

me to help fund this thing, he
said.
Not only was he able to gather
donations, he was able to establish relationships with businesses willing to donate services to
the event.
For seven straight years, a
printing company has been printing invitations to the kids, Hartman said. Camden County Technical High School produces the

West Jazz Ensemble play at the
dinner. Its really a grassroots
community-based organization.
Hartman also wanted the ceremony to be held at a prestigious
venue. He established a relationship with The Mansion in
Voorhees. Every ceremony since
the organizations founding has
been held there.
The first ceremony went off
perfectly in 2009. Little did Hartman know there would be dozens
of more ceremonies to be held in
places he would never imagine
over the next few years.

Becoming a national nonprofit

After the first ceremony, Our
Community Salutes began to capture the attention of people outside of South Jersey. A story
about the organization ran in a
military recruiter magazine and
helped spread the news nation-

wide.
Hartman began to receive
emails and phone calls from people across the United States who
wanted to get involved. Hartman
began to invite those people to the
ceremonies in South Jersey to see
how they were done so they could
be emulated in other regions.
Over the next few years, OCS
chapters began popping up in
every region of the United States.
Hartman said the tight-knit military community and its willingness to support new recruits was
a big reason the organization became so big.
It grows in so many ways because of the chemistry created at
these events, Hartman said. It

Cherry Hill American Little League 10U wins tournament

Homegrown plants produce

savings and education
By Freeholder Michelle Gentek

Special to The Sun

The Cherry Hill American Little League 10U tournament team won the Sacred Heart Slugfest Tournament
championship on July 27, defeating Taney, 10-5. The American team included Luke Ambrosino, Alex LaRusso,
Antonio Carrero, Lucas Flynn, Devon Stopek, Colin Costello, Max Rider, Trent Doughty, Connor Gahm, Alex
Smith and Andrew Condurso. The team was coached by Jim LaRusso, Henry Carrero and Rich Ambrosino.

The height of the

summer growing
season is upon us,
and things are in
full bloom at the
Camden County
Greenhouse. The
newly invigorated
greenhouse is located at the Camden
County
Environmental
Campus at Lakeland. Dedicated
volunteers are currently growing
more than 15,000 plants that will
beautify the Camden County
Park System.
In years past, the park system
would purchase flowers from
commercial green houses, but
now the thousands of plants used
to enliven the county and the park
system are all locally grown in
county facilities. The greenhouse
is currently growing more than
5,000 winter pansy seedlings for
planting in this fall.
We completely transformed our
100-foot-long greenhouse that had
sat vacant for several years. In addition to supplying our parks
with vegetation, it hosts a unique
learning experience in collaboration with the Rutgers Master
Gardeners program.
This year, we also focused on
three main annuals: Petunias,
Verbena, & Lantana. They were
selected for their drought tolerance, ease of care and vibrant colors. This has created a substantial
savings since we were able to buy
much smaller plants and grow
them with the help of our Rutgers
Master Gardeners and volunteers
from local municipal green
teams.
Camden County Master Gardeners and certified community
greenhouse members are on
hand to teach volunteers the gardening process from seeds to full
grown plants. Children can come

here to see how

fruits and vegetables are grown, and
become inspired to
start their own
gardens.
We are continuing
to expand the programming offered
at the greenhouse,
and have great
plans for the future
of the environmental campus.
Currently, we are completing the
roof on our new potting shed at
the facility and are looking forward to opening the first certified
outdoor classroom in South Jersey through the Explore Nature
Program. These new features
will join the Camden County Sensory Garden, an immersive experience for children of all abilities.
The Camden County Environmental Campus is located at 508
Lakeland Road in Gloucester
Township. The newest addition
to the Camden County Park System has transformed an eightacre site at the Lakeland Complex
in the Blackwood neighborhood
into a hub for community gardening and environmental education.
We invite you to join are team of
volunteers that are working to
make Camden County greener. If
you arent able to volunteer,
please stop by the greenhouse to
say hello and check out all of the
great things going on there.

Focus should stay on non-profit

and its work, Hartman says
FOCUS
Continued from page 14
the country. One local veteran
who got involved locally is LTC
Bryan Dunn. A West Point graduate, Dunn first met Hartman
while attending graduate school
at Drexel University a couple
years ago.
I knew the truth in what he
was trying to accomplish, Dunn
said. I thought it was a great
idea.
Dunn did not enlist in the military right out of high school, instead choosing to go to West
Point. However, he remembered
hearing about fellow graduates
who enlisted in the military right
after high school.
I remember there being a
recognition for all the kids going

to college and West Point was one

of those colleges, he said. And I
dont think they said a thing
about my classmates that were
enlisting.
Dunn said getting personally
involved with Our Community
Salutes has been a touching experience.
I love seeing their wide eyes at
the pageantry and the sense of
community, Dunn said. We intend to say youve graduated high
school and youre doing something very honorable.

Its about the parents

and the kids
The Army contacted Hartman
in early June and said it wanted
to award him with the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal. At
first, Hartman wasnt interested.
It was unexpected and really

not necessary, he said.

After giving the award some
thought, Hartman decided to accept it. However, he didnt want
the medal to be all about him. He
instead wanted the focus to reside
on Our Community Salutes and
the good it has done for hundreds
of recruits across the country.
Its not about me, he said.
Its about the parents and the
kids. I recognized the attention
this medal brings to the organization.
Hartman didnt want to take
credit himself, but both Tuczak
and Dunn agreed Our Community Salutes would not be what it is
today without Hartmans resiliency and hard work.
It takes someone like him to
keep the ball rolling, Tuczak
said. When someone calls, hes
there 24-7 to provide that assistance.
He nailed it with the community aspect, Dunn said.
In the letter sent to Hartman,
the Army also acknowledged his
hard work.
Your unmatched patriotism
embodies the core values of a patriot and true humanitarian,
which reflects great credit upon
yourself, the United States Army
Recruiting Command and the
United States Army, the letter
read.
Our Community Salutes is continuing to grow. Last week, Hartman received multiple messages
from people in different areas of
the country interested in starting
a chapter. While the amount of
time running the organization
has increased over the last few
years, Hartman said being able to
support the military recruits and
their parents makes it worth it.

Community Salutes or to find out
how to get involved, visit
