George Green Does
District

WITH

MIKE
REYNOLDS

Councilman

George Dont you know who I

am? Green has been throwing his
weight around again, this time trying to
get road crews to work on his block, beyond
the scope of their assigned tasks.
You might remember Green as the
Councilman that attempted to have the Comal
County Fair Associations fairgrounds lease
revoked as retaliation for Fair staff declining
to allow Green to park in a restricted area,
and his obligatory charges of racism on the
part of Fair staff that followed. Thats not the
only time hes done something like that, only
our favorite. In short, the Councilman has a
long history of demanding special treatment
around town, which has only gotten worse
since he took office.
At the July 13 Council meeting, George
stepped down from the dais, and took center
stage at the podium, in full concerned-publicservant mode, to explain to Council that part
of Loma Vista street, the section between
Becker and I-35, was supposed to have
been approved by Council for repair with
the rest of Loma Vista, but had not. Green
took two conflicting tacks to make his point.
The first was that it was overlooked, and the
other was that, in retrospect, it should have
been included, as evidenced by this quote:
Its like building a home. You can start out
with all the features you select and pick and
somehow or another by the time you get to
a certain stage of that home build that, hey,
something has been left out.
According to Green, it was negligence
in planning on the part of City Staff, and
negligence in voting on the part of the
Council he sits on, AND not negligence at
all, but rather a need that revealed itself after
the fact and now needs to be addressed.
TXCITIZEN.COM

Councilman Green, like so many

other amateur thinkers, talks in
circles and puts forth multiple
arguments at once, hoping
that one will stick and the
balance be disregarded. Its
like hes never read this column.
The It should have been in
the original street plan assertion was
rebuffed by District Six rep Leah Garcia, who
said: We voted, though, back in February
after we reviewed this in the fall, and that
was all that was included was a portion of it,
not the whole street. And Im really familiar
with this street, and the other end of it that
didnt has a higher (street condition) rating
and is in a lot better shape than the part they
redid. So, you know, I could see maybe with
the budgets going forth, but we all voted for
the same thing. And it was in there in black
and white at the time.
Green responded with this: Its just like
building a home. I mean, not until you get
to a certain point, and I caught it while they
were out working the streets
Garcia: But you should have caught it
when we voted on it. We could have talked
about it then.
Green: Again, if youve been in a
building process, there are a lot of eyes that
have been on the documents that everyone
has signed off on, but theres still things that
are overlooked and I think this is one that has
been overlooked, because again, it should
have been the entire street of Loma Vista
because it doesnt serve the entire purpose of
what we were trying to do.
According to Green, it was originally
part of the total road plan approved by
Council earlier, and the fact that it actually
wasnt, was a mistake. The fact is, Green
doesnt read the agenda packets before
he votes. He just blames everyone else
when it doesnt say what he thought it did.
Or should have.

An attempt to reduce the amount of restitution

ordered paid to the family of a teenager
killed in an attack at Canyon High School
backfired as the judge ordered the convicted
teenager to pay more.
Joseph E. Garcia III, the attorney for
the teenager who was convicted in the fatal
2013 assault of Logan Davidson, requested
that the court reduce his clients $20,000
restitution payment, which was intended to
reimburse the family for Logans medical and
funeral expenses. Garcia argued that the
Davidson family had received money from
the States Crime Victims Fund and other
personal donations, so his clients part of the
restitution should be reduced by the amount
of those funds.
Instead,

Judge

Charles

Stephens

ordered that the convicted teens family

should pay $6,000 more to reimburse the
Crime Victims Fund.
I get that, I understand that, Garcia
said, referring to Stephens order to reimburse
the state fund. I really have no issue with
that. We just figured, if there were funds
gathered by the Mothers of New Braunfels
and other charitable contributions that went
to both of the families, those amounts should
have been put into the equation.
The attorney said there has been no
decision yet whether to appeal the restitution.
I havent really spoken to my clients
about what they want to do, he said. At
some point, they may just want to let it lie and
put it behind them.
In November, 2013, the convicted teen
punched 15-year-old Logan twice in the face
as Davidson exited a classroom, causing his
classmate to die from a lacerated vertebral
artery in the neck. The teenager said he
threw the punches to get Logan to back off.
During the trial, witnesses testified that
the day before the incident, Logan hit the
defendant in the crotch, leading the teen

with a variety of things. Witnesses testified

that the defendant had told Logan and
others to stop your shit. While the others
stopped, Logan was said to have continued
throwing things, even hitting the defendant
in the face with an eraser.
Video of the attack shows the defendant
ambushing Logan outside the classroom.
After a brutal first punch, Logan turned to
the wall, whereupon the convicted teen
grabbed Logans backpack, and spun the
victim around in order to land an equallybrutal second punch. After the second punch,
Logans head hit the wall and he collapsed,
unresponsive. He died the next day.
The State had originally charged the teen
with murder and manslaughter. Before Stephens
gave the jury sentencing instructions, however,
defense attorney Garcia asked the judge to
also add the charge of misdemeanor assault.
Stephens agreed, prompting an objection by
prosecutor Tiffany Leal. The State appealed the
judges decision to the Third Court of Appeals,
who ruled in favor of Stephens.
The jury eventually convicted the teen
of the misdemeanor assault after a day
of deliberations. After the verdict, Garcia
said jurors had told him that had the State
charged his client with aggravated assault, a
felony, they likely would have convicted him
of that charge.
Besides the restitution, Stephens also
ordered the convicted teen seek counseling,
be put on probation until he turns 18 and

FEATURE STORY:

Wine and Wine and we dont want to put it in a headline.

By Nick Rogers

percent of new cases found are in women

After an 8-year battle, breast cancer claimed

under the age of 45.

Last years event went even better than
expected. Kelly put the word out on social
media, and more than 20 women showed up.
Aideen said the most important lesson
for women is to understand their bodies and
what is normal.
While everyones normal is different,
women need to be aware of what is
normal to them so if something changes,
they can know what to look for and what
to do about that.
Although Aideen is quick to note that she
is not an expert in the field of breast cancer,
she does know how to point women in the
right direction.
I want to give women an avenue to
someone to whom they can ask questions,
she said. Its not necessarily my specialty
nor necessarily within the comfort zone of my
own medical career, but Im a girl, too, and I
can help find the right people.
For Larry, the goal is simple: to save lives.
If we can educate one person and
save just one life, thats all there is to
it, he said. Early detection is the key
because you never know when or if it can
hit. The women we have lost meant a lot to
a lot of people. An ounce of prevention is
absolutely true.
For April and Hannah, they are grateful
to Larry and Kelly for establishing the event
so others might be alleviated of the suffering
their mother went through.
I would like to encourage women to
come to the event, and if not, meet with their
close friends and family, April said. Dont
be afraid to talk about it. Crack open a
bottle of wine to lighten the mood, and check

the life of 45-year-old Kim Dupre in 2013.

Because there is a strong genetic link to breast
cancer, Kims two daughters realized they
needed a better understanding of the disease.
Even though April and Hannah Dupre
are young women, they know that it is never
too soon to be concerned about breast
cancer. But cancer is a touchy and frightening
subject, and difficult to talk about.
As friends and neighbors to the Dupres,
Larry Johnson and Kelly Mochel wanted to
find a way to make the subject easier to
broach, a way to make talking about breast
cancer more comfortable.
Larrys

solution

was

Wine

and

Boobies Night.
We know breast cancer is genetic, so
ahead of time you can learn to stay on top of
it, he said. I think Kim was first diagnosed
when she was 38 and died when she was 45,
which is way too young. We love Hannah
and April and we wanted to help them.
April and Hannah are young, so it was
important to teach them to not be afraid, be
comfortable with yourself and what youre
feeling, and know yourself, Kelly said.
The point of the evening is to let the
women to have a little wine to relax into
talking about breast cancer. The event is, as
Larry notes, boobies only.
There are no guys allowed, he said. The
girls can come in to learn about breast cancer
and how to examine their breasts, without the
guys around. This is important because we lost
Kim, and weve lost friends. These are mothers,
daughters and wives, so this is serious business.
Larry and Kelly then enlisted the help
of another neighbor and friend, Aideen
CdeBaca, the ICU charge nurse at Christus
Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels.
Aideens role is to help the women understand
a little more about their bodies and how to
examine themselves.
TXCITIZEN.COM

I think its extremely important to have

an awareness of your own body and what
you can do to maintain health, Aideen said.
In a country where medical care can be so
unaffordable, it can be scary for a lot of people
if they dont know where to begin, particularly
young people. If I can help, then I am happy to.
Aideens goal is to open discussions
about the topic and help the women feel a bit
more comfortable.
It can be scary, so I approach it this
way: Im a girl and I have the same the
equipment you do, and so I have the same
worries you do, she said. Potentially we all
have the same concerns, so we have a glass
of wine to relax a little bit. This reduces the
stress about asking questions that may seem
personal and hard to ask.
Aideen does have one advantage when
it comes to understanding the disease: Her
brother, Dr. Kienan Savage, is the head
breast cancer researcher at the Northern
Ireland Cancer Institute and is one of the
foremost experts in the field. A brother on
the cutting edge of breast cancer research
allows Aideen to pass along the latest
information to other women.
What makes Wine and Boobies night
unique is the mood. The evening allows
women to relax and have fun, drink wine and

eat boob-shaped pastries. This helps them

openly discuss a difficult topic.
The atmosphere at last years event was
serious but not uptight, Kelly said. It was fun.
A lot of girls bonded together. So even though
it was like a party, it was about a serious
thing. For the young girls, it helped them
become more comfortable with themselves.
They dont have be afraid, just be aware.
According to the younger women, the
comfortable atmosphere indeed helped.
We all immediately felt open with one
another and it was very private, April said.
The wine lightened the mood and made it
easier for everyone to talk openly.
Quincey

Kendrick,

another

young

woman who attended last year, agreed.

We got a lot of information, it was
very informative, she said. But I felt really
comfortable and everyone was hilarious.
Statistics certainly reinforce the importance
of the subject. According to the CDC, breast
cancer is the second most common cancer
among American women, behind skin cancer.
In 2011 (the latest year with comprehensive
data), more than 200,000 women in the U.S.
contracted the disease and more than 40,000
died from it. And, while most cases diagnosed
are in women more than 50 years of age, 11

yourself and your friends.

Wine and Boobies night will be held at Larry and Kellys

home at 158 E. Camp St. While a firm date has yet to be
set, the event will be held within the next couple of weeks.
The TX Citizen will post the date and time on its Facebook
page at facebook.com/txcitizen.

Hard Knockin

Pre-season Top 25 polls have been released,

high school football training camps have opened
and this Sunday well actually get to watch some
(albeit terrible) NFL football with Minnesota and
Pittsburgh playing each other in the annual preseason Hall of Fame Game from Canton Ohio.
Next week also marks the beginning of Hard
Knocks, the HBO NFL series documenting a
specific team during their training camps in the
lead up to the regular season. This year, that
team is the Houston Texans, and hopefully the
show can breathe some life into whats been an
otherwise bland franchise.
Before Texans fans get upset, let me
cover a few things: 1) The team I like, the
Tennessee Titans, are a bit of garbage fire of
a franchise right now and even though their
future has promise with Marcus Mariotta as
their quarterback, the Titans are a few more
4-12/5-11 seasons away from contending.
2) I grew up an Oilers fan, so I have cheered
for Houston football before. 3) JJ Watt is the
best football player on the planet and is a
generational player. You know how people
talk about Jerry Rice? We will talk about Watt
in the same manner 20 years from now.
Seriously. Here are his cyborgian
numbers just 4 years into his career: 68 games
(including 4 playoff games), 68 starts. 37
passes defended (by comparison, teammate
Kareem Jackson, a cornerback, has 40 over
the last 4 seasons). 57 sacks (third most ever
for a player in the first four seasons of their
career). 12 forced fumbles the last three years.
Last season, Watt scored five touchdowns
(including three receiving TDs) and recorded
a safety those 32 points were more than
WR Andre Johnson and all of the Texans tight
ends combined. In addition to his gaudy stats,
Watt is charming, marketable, charismatic
and well, dreamy. Yet, the Texans are still
considered to be vanilla yogurt to the NFLs
Baskin Robbins selection, with a 9-7 finish last
season, are two years removed from a 2-14
season and the two playoff wins came over
the Bengals (and playing post-season games

against Andy Daulton is the equivalent of

taking an open-book test while being allowed
to look at half of the answer key).
For Watts sake, the Texans HAVE to put a
better team around him, or risk him becoming
this generations Ken Griffey Jr., an all-time
great who never won a title. Houston sports
have a history of this by the way, Craig Biggio,
Tracy McGrady, Warren Moon, etc. (I realize
Im probably not making a lot of H-town friends
today um, how about that Carlos Correa?!).
With the quarterback battle looming between
Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett, Im not sure Id
hold out a lot of hope for the 2015 season
either. Hard Knocks should be entertaining
as always, but there might be a reason teams
have avoided the show like MMA fighters
should start avoiding getting in an octagon
with Ronda Rousey. In nine seasons of Hard
Knocks, less than half the featured teams have
gone on to reach the playoffs. Four head
coaches were fired/resigned within three
years of the shows airing. The average finish
for Hard Knocks teams is 8-8 mediocre, a
label the Texans are trying to shed.
Bill OBrien is a good coach. Watt is a
franchise cornerstone. If Jadaveon Clowney can
stay healthy, he can pair with Watt to create a
fearsome pass rush for years to come. Arian
Foster remains as one of the best running backs in
the AFC. Im not sure the Texans are in a position
to truly compete with the Colts for the division
title this year (although theyre probably a safe
bet to sweep Tennessee, dammit) but could they
be in the playoff hunt come December? If they
can stay healthy and get even decent play from
the QB position then sure, why not? For now
well settle for watching third string fullbacks and
barely NFL-caliber defensive tackles compete for
roster spots when the Texans make their Hard
Knocks debut next week. Maybe itll be the start
of adding some sprinkles to the vanilla.

ASK A MEXICAN!
By Gustavo Arellano portrayed

Dear Mexican: Some time back

you discussed the Chivas soccer
team. This reminded me of my time
in San Franciscos Mission District,
when the traficantes would whisper,
Chiva...chiva, (pronounced cheeba), as I walked down 16th Street.
At least, thats what it sounded
like. When I asked someone what
it meant, they said, stuff, which
seemed plausible enough. Now its
baby goats? I know slang etymology
is often hard to pin down, but why is
heroin referred to as chiva, if thats
the right word?
My Only Animal is a Chihuahua
Dear Gabacho: Dont ask me: ask
my pal Sam Quinones, the greatest-ever

reporter on Mexican immigration to the

U.S. and its effects on both countries,
and author of the magnificent new book,
Dreamland: The True Tale of Americas
Opiate Epidemic. His response: Oooh
estimado, thats no goat theyre offering
for sale. Thats black-tar heroin. Chivas
are indeed a soccer team, and chiva
means goat, the meat that goes into that
delicious birria and barbacoa that the
folks from Jalisco and Michoacn make
so well. But on the street, its slang for that
sticky, semi-processed kind of heroin that
looks like rat crap, and tends to block up
all your arteries and then pretty soon, you
get infections and gangrene, then flies
start buzzing the infected area, and, trust
me, no one wants to talk to you after that.
So you want to stay away from the chiva
those heavy breathers are offering on the
street. Theyre supplied by our traficante
friends from northwest Mexico, whom we
have to thank for the decapitations and
wanton massacres of late. Stick with the
barbacoa. Itll just get your fingers messy.

Dear
Mexican:
Perhaps
immigrants need a bit of a public
relations boost. Instead of being

who siphon off taxpayer money,
shouldnt someone point out that
they believe in America, and want
to be part of a free nation built on
American principles? This may go
a long way towards integrating the

Dear

Gabacho:

While

Theyre rapists. And some, I assume,

celebrate all the bad Mexicans that
come into this country without papers.
Lets celebrate people like my dad, who
came to this country with a fourth-grade
education and is the proud papi of four
college graduatesthree of them with
masters degrees. Let us now praise
the people savvy enough to not only
escape la migra, but then make a life of
themselves in los Estados Unidos outside
immigration law. The supposed losers of
society are who made this nation, from
former slaves to Jewish refugees to the
Yellow Menace, homesteaders, and yes,
Mexicans. Besides, when we do highlight
the absolute best Mexican immigrants we

those same Know Nothings like Trump just
dismiss them as illegals.

4-Bs Rush Giveaway

Editors Response

The San Antonio Express-News

reported on Sunday Aug 3, 2015
that Rush Enterprises family scion
Rusty Rushs total compensation in
2014 was $4,395,593 with a bonus
of $1,900,000. The companys net
income for the second quarter was
$19.6 Million.
Maybe the bonus would have
been $1,100,000 if the 4B Board
hadnt given Rush Enterprises a real
gift of $800,000.
The problem is 4B is swimming
in cash and looking everywhere to
find a home where they can legally
spend it. They get 25% of (local)
sales taxes and are pulling in about
$500,000 a MONTH. Meanwhile we
need more Police and Firemen and
should pay them more to attract and
retain them.
But they cant be paid with
4B money as that can only be
spent on economic development
type projects.
You have been involved with
petitions before. Rather than
continue to just write about 4B, you
could rally your supporters to force
a proposition on the ballot to reduce
4B from 3/8% to 1/4% which would
give the City about $2,500,000 in
funds to spend on other needed
projects.
Then the citizens can
decide how to balance economic
development with other city needs.
All of our Councilmembers
said they wanted to address our
crumbling infrastructure when they
were running for election. Now that
theyre in place, their stripes have
changed to corporate welfare led by
Michael Meek of the Chamber. The
more Chamber members, the more
dues they collect, and the more
money he makes.

Meeks 4-B and Chamber of Commerce have

Name withheld upon request.

been making the lives of local small business

owners difficult for a good long while. Indy
business owners need to stand up to 4-B and
the Chamber, and soon, because theyre
ready to pay off all manner of chain stores
to come here and replace every mom-andpop operation with a shiny new corporate
surrogate. Abandon all hope of preserving
small-town culture, and say hello to your
ever-expanding franchise ghetto.
We dont get involved with petitions
right now we do all the heavy lifting when it
comes to digging into these issues, and were
tired of pushing this stupid boulder uphill. The
small business people of this town continue to
join Meeks Chamber, supporting the guy that
will eventually drive them into bankruptcy.
Frankly, if theyre stupid enough to help Meek
get his way, we wont shed a tear for them
when theyre put down by yet another big
box store or restaurant conglomerate.
For the record, we dont care if the
big box stores come. They can build and
operate anywhere they can afford to. We
do care that taxes paid by local business
people are used to bring in the very
companies that will drive them under. Its
anti-free market. Its anti-competitive. Its
immoral. Its the kind of thing Americas
founders would start a war over.
You want change? Organize yourselves.
Shut down 4-B. Demand that the payments
of the millions of tax dollars the Chamber
gets annually be stopped. Its a private
club - they dont deserve public cash.
And for a gods sake, if you run a small
business, dont be a moron. STOP JOINING
THE MOTHER-####### CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE. Chamber President Michael
Meek is actively using your money, through
4-B, to render you irrelevant.

Trump and Truth-Telling

I dont like Donald Trump as a candidate.
Where I do know where he stands on the

though, that Trump has struck a chord

seems pretty obvious to me: Trump isnt

Whether I agree with him or whether
