ThisthesisexaminestheongoingtrendsindepictionsofNativeAmericanIndiansin
popularmainstreammediafromthelasttwodecades.Stereotypesingeneralandin
relationtoNativeAmericanIndiansarediscussed,andapatternofstereotypereactions
tocolonistsperceivedstrainsisidentified.Ananalysisofpopulartelevisionshows,
movies,andbookswithcontemporaryNativecharacterswilldemonstratenewtrends
whichwemightconsidertransformedoremergingstereotypesofNativepeopleinnon
Nativemedia.Thesetrendswillnotonlybeshowntohaveemergedfrommoregeneral
nationalandregionalstereotypesofNativeidentity,butwillalsodemonstratea
continuationofthehistoricalwillingnessofcoloniststorelyonmorevirulentNative
stereotypesincaseswheretheyperceivesomeNativethreat.Particularattentionwillbe
paidtothedenialofIndianidentityinthesoutheastandnortheastthroughcomedyand
mockeryand,ontheotherhand,theexaggerationofIndianidentityinthewestern
UnitedStatesthroughshapeshifting,paranormalencounters,mystery,andmore
