Listen closely as you drive across the U.S. 331 Clyde B. Wells Bridge this summer and you'll
hear it. The "ping-ping-ping" of diesel-powered impact hammers driving piles for the new
Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge. Permit restrictions preclude impact pile driving during October and
November, so the goal is to complete this portion of the work by September 30.
Next the construction team will begin setting concrete girders. The girders are arriving by barge
from a fabrication yard in Mississippi. Boaters are urged to keep a safe distance from the
construction activity and be mindful of their wake.

WALTON CO. SHERIFF RESPONDS TO COMPLAINT
ACCESS FOR WORKING MOMS FOCUS
OF MONTH-LONG CAMPAIGN
The group filed a complaint with the Sheriff over the application of the official
motto of the United States and the State of Florida to patrol cars. (The decals were
provided at no cost to taxpayers). Annie Laurie Gaylor P.O. Box 750 Madison,
WI 53701 Here is Sheriff Adkinsons response: dated August 4, 2015.
Ms. Gaylor,
Thank you for your correspondence. I respect and appreciate the religious convictions or lack thereof of all citizens. I will continue to dutifully enforce the law and
protect the rights of all parties, regardless of my personal opinions, as I have for
my last 23 years in law enforcement. I see absolutely no conflict in this matter.
You are obviously unaware that in God we trust is the state motto of the state
of Florida, and has been since 1886. This was reaffirmed in 2006. Additionally, it
is the motto of the United States. I would also point out that the motto is inside
the badge that has been on the side of our vehicles since the inception of marked
patrol cars. As far as the use of tax payer money, I am very proud to say that although it was my intention to pay for them personally and that numerous sheriffs
office members wanted to contribute; a local business has asked to provide them
(Triangle Chevrolet). I will not debate the merit of your understanding of constitutional law in regard to this matter. Suffice it to say that I am very aware of the
parameters in which our office should operate. We diligently strive to provide
principled, fair and professional services (law enforcement as well as other community based services). The disdain of a small minority should never, absent
legitimate grievance, take precedence over the majority. Therefore, in this issue I
am unwilling to compromise.
If the Freedom From Religion Foundation wishes us to take them off our vehicles
I suggest that they get a Judges order, or a new Sheriff.
Sincerely, Sheriff Michael A. Adkinson, Jr. / Office of the Sheriff, Walton Co.

Study finds more men using them to achieve 'perfect' body, may
qualify as new eating disorder
Fitness buffs who are obsessed with bodybuilding, and the bulging
biceps and "six-pack" abs it produces, are overusing supplements to the
point that the practice might qualify as a new kind of eating disorder.
A survey found that more than 40 percent of these men indicated that
their use of supplements such as whey protein, protein bars, creatine and
glutamine had increased over time, said study author Richard Achiro, a
Los Angeles psychotherapist.
Further, one of every five men said they replaced regular meals with
dietary supplements that are not intended to be meal replacements.
On the more extreme end, 8 percent of the men said their physician told
them to cut back or stop using supplements due to an actual or potential
effect on their health, and 3 percent had been hospitalized for kidney or
liver problems related to the use of these supplements. Quite a few men
are indeed using these supplements in a way that can adversely affect
their physical health," Achiro said. "Most alarming is that 30 percent of
those men have said their own use of these supplements has concerned
them."
Responses to questions from an eating disorder questionnaire indicated
that the men are using these supplements for many of the same reasons
women turn to bulimia or anorexia The male standard of beauty emphasizes big muscles and a lean frame, so it stands to reason that men obsessed with their body image would turn to supplements and exercise
rather than fall into an eating disorder that would cause the body to
waste away, Achiro said.
"Basically, men have different standards and ideals than women when it
comes to their bodies, and it makes sense that an eating disorder would
be expressed differently in men than in women," The men were asked to
complete an online survey about a variety of subjects, including supplement use, self-esteem, body image, eating habits and gender role
conflicts.
Although these supplements are legal and sold over-the-counter, overusing them or substituting them for food can cause serious health problems. Men can wind up suffering from dehydration, kidney problems and
diarrhea by eating too much protein from whey powder or bars or taking
too much creatine, an organic acid that supplies energy to muscle.
Men have become more self-conscious of their bodies as women have
achieved financial independence and started judging men on their
appearance, much as men have traditionally judged women.
Make certain you can handle what you are attempting to accomplish.
Whether it be Mass muscle or heart health supplements have advantages
as well as advantages. Check with a Dr. to ensure you dont overdose.

OPERATION BLUE
BIRD
As the new school year inches
closer, the Walton County Sheriffs Office is taking a close look
at how to to help keep our children safe as they head back to the
classroom. Starting August 10th
the Sheriff is initiating
Operation Blue Bird.
The focus of the operation is
school zone and school bus
safety. A Task Force will be assembling each day from patrol
positions to address traffic concerns in different school zones
throughout the county. Operations
will run from 7am to 8am and
from 2pm to 3pm and will include
deputies running radar, looking
for infractions, and following
school buses along their routes to
make sure drivers are obeying
traffic laws.
The Sheriff will also be deploying
digital message boards to be
placed at several intersections
throughout the county. We are
committed to keeping Walton
County's children safe,
said Sheriff Michael Adkinson.
They are our most important
asset.

Health Officials Urge Residents to Avoid Contact with Wild and Stray Animals
- The Florida Department of Health in Walton County (DOH-Walton) urges residents
to avoid contact with wild and stray animals to protect themselves from the risk of
rabies exposure. In Florida, raccoons, bats and foxes, and unvaccinated cats are the
animals most frequently diagnosed with rabies. Other animals that are at high risk for
rabies include skunks, otters, coyotes, bobcats, and stray or unvaccinated dogs and
ferrets. Each year, DOH-Walton receives reports of rabid animals. In 2014, one rabid
fox was reported in Walton County. Most recently, a fox with exposure to a pet was
reported in August.
Rabies is a potentially fatal disease. It is important not to handle wild animals, to be
aware of unusual acting animals and to keep pets vaccinated against rabies, said
Holly Holt, Administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Walton County.
Rabies is transmitted through exposure to the saliva and nervous tissue from a rabid
animal through a bite, scratch, or contact with mucous membranes such as the eyes,
nose, or mouth. DOH-Walton works with Walton County Animal Services in responding to incidents of animal bites, tests animals for rabies through the Department
of Health state laboratory and quarantines animals as necessary. DOH-Walton also
provides rabies vaccinations to victims of animal bites, the only known effective
treatment for rabies prevention in humans.
The following are steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones against
rabies:
Keep rabies vaccinations up to date for all pets. Keep your pets under direct supervision so they do not come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild
animal, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately and contact Walton
County Animal Services at 850-892-8682 or the DOH-Walton Environmental Health
Division at 850-892-8021. Call your local animal control agency to remove any stray
animals from your neighborhood. Spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number
of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or regularly vaccinated. Do not
handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.
Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Teach children never to
handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. Prevent
bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools,
and other similar areas, where they might come in contact with people and pets.

Small Town Living
By Rian Lyday
Living in a small
town...is like living in a
large family of rather uncongenial relations.
Sometimes its fun, and sometimes its perfectly
awful, but its always good for you. People in
large towns are like only-children.
Joyce Dennys
There is something to be said about small town living.
Today was the first day of school and I had the fantastic
opportunity to observe Freeport Middle School in all their
first day glory. I have lived in large towns and seen children struggle in a school system that looks at them as a
number, not a childwhere backgrounds and life stories
were a part of a folder, not part of a classroom. We moved
here to allow our son to experience a childhood that included librarians knowing his name, neighbors waving to
each other, and the waitress at the local restaurant asking
how your child is by name. Our son became more than a
number and instead, part of a family, when he entered
Walton County Schools. We are lucky. We live in an area
where school is a prioritychildren come first and education means something to every single member of our
county. People in our community are invested in our children. My new job allows me to visit numerous schools in
Walton County and each teacher I talk to feels the same,
they work hard to provide what is best for our students. I
had the opportunity to speak to the new teachers at Freeport Middle today and the most common reaction was how
fantastic the students were and how amazed they were at
the manners the children had in the classroom. In 2015,
that means the world. We live in a society where saying
yes maam and holding doors for people is an exception,
not a rule. Look around at our community, when you have
time, and appreciate the wonderful place we live in.
Teachers, custodians, secretaries, the Superintendent
every single person in this county works to make your
childs education the best they can. Of course I am immersed in education, so take my opinion for what it is
worth, but spend a few hours in your childs school one
dayyou will see that we are blessed to live in a county
where every child matters. Thank someone who has
changed your childs life and wave to your neighbor,
appreciate living in Walton County.

ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO
MATTER WHAT THE FRONT

SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND
READ THE BACK--CAREFULLY!
With all the food ...and pet products now coming from China , it is
best to make sure you read label at
the grocery store and especially
Walmart when buying food products.
Many products no longer show
where they were made, only give
where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code
to track it's origin. How to read
Bar Codes .... interesting!
This may be useful to know when
grocery shopping, if it's a concern
to you. The whole world is concerned about China-made "black
hearted goods". Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan
or China ?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode
are 690 691 or 692, the product is
MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan .
This is our right to know, but the
government and related departments never educate the public,
therefore we have to RESCUE
ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen
know that consumers do not prefer
products "MADE IN CHINA", so
they don't show from which country it is made. However, you may
now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 ... then it is MADE IN
CHINA

40 - 44 GERMANY
