THREE DAY NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON
MYTH, HISTORY AND SANSKRIT LITERATURE Understanding of the cultural heritage of a country cannot be complete without knowing its ancient literature. As far as India is concerned its ancient past is closely associated with Sanskrit language and its literature. Hence, a real comprehension of Indias ancient history would be possible only when the knowledge embedded in Sanskrit literature is studied well. The study of Sanskrit literature for understanding Indias cultural, social and political history needs to be carried out carefully. The great works Vedas, Itihasas, Puranas and many other genres of writings in Sanskrit contain abundant narratives which presumably are treated as historical records by a good number of people. But, a perusal of those sources would clearly reveal that such narratives are mythical accounts only. Myths, being the narratives codified in the early stages of history, basically are the world-view of a particular society. They are consisting of religious elements and the concept of the supernatural. At the same time, myths reflect the attitude of the people towards reality. So, myths play a significant role in the study of social, cultural, political and also scientific history of ancient civilization. Thus the study of myths contained in Sanskrit literature is of high importance in re-constructing the history of India. A multi-pronged approach is necessary in the study of ancient Indian history by analyzing the myths in Sanskrit literature. The perspectives of Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics and Cultural Studies would be of help for an effective study in this area. This task can neither be carried out by scholars of Sanskrit nor by historians alone. Therefore a joint venture with the collaboration of scholars from different disciplines is a desideratum. Keeping this view in mind the Department of Sanskrit Sahitya, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala (India), which has been taking continuous efforts in this direction, wishes to organize Three Day National Level Workshop on Myth, History and Sanskrit Literature from 05/02/2014 to 07/02/2014.
