FSP Centenary Foundation Highlights World Communications Day

By Sr. Teresita C. Espina, FSP

Fr. Mario Sobrejuanite, SSP

The talk Living the Life

that Matters of Fr. Mario
Sobrejuanite, SSP was the
highlight of the two-fold
celebration of the Centenary
of the FSP Foundation and the
49th World Communications
Day on July 15, 2015 at Our Lady
of Manaoag Chapel, Limketkai
Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

Fr. Mario
gave a soulsearching
presentation
of how to live a
fruitful life and
leading others
towards
a
life full of
meaning. He
said that one
must realize
that he is only
a passerby; he
leaves behind
the treasures,
fame, power and people he
holds dear when he dies. A rich
person is not one who has the
most material things but one
who has the least needs.
He further stressed that
the true character of a person
is revealed by how he manages
when he has nothing, and how
he acts when he has everything.

Making the Message Matter

Fr. Mario Sobrejuanite,

SSP gave a talk, Making
the Message Matter to the
Oro clergy during their
recollection on July 14, 2015
at Patrick Cronin Formation
Hall. He said that the survey
conducted by SWS in July 1991
shows that there are 81% of
Catholics who attend mass on
Sundays. In 2013 it has gone
down to 37%, and for every
11 Catholics, one is thinking
of leaving the Church.
Various
reasons
include: fierce individualism,
rebellion against perceived
authoritarianism, secularism
and materialism, contempt for
things traditional, the scandals
in the Church, and because
the majority of Catholics are
sacramentalized but not
evangelized.
He
said
that
the
proclamation of the Word is
a challenge to re-incarnate
Jesus and make him visible,
tangible, understandable and
acceptable to the people of
today. How do we make the
message matter so that when
people go home, the message
becomes the source of
strength and pillar of support
for the next week before they
go to church again? he asked.
It was pointed out that priests
have the best product but they
dont know how to market it.
One has to promote market,
package, present, expose and
advertize the message in order
to make the message matter in
ones life.
He
gave
four
elements necessary in the
proclamation of the Word:
a) communication; b) know
God personally; c) know the
people to whom you proclaim
really well; d) recognize the
presence of the power of the
Holy Spirit.

Pope Paul VI once said

that modern man listens to
witnesses than to teachers; and
if he does listen to teachers, it
is because they are witnesses.
Being a witness means one
has lived a dynamic, profound
and personal relationship
with Christ. Pope Francis said
that preachers must be the
first ones to be moved by the
Word of God and incarnate in
his daily life.
People
thirst
for
authenticity and call for
evangelizers to speak of God
not in general and abstract
way, but to shepherd with love
and compassion. As ministers,
one must go ahead of the flock
so that one can bring them to
the right pasture, stay behind
the flock so that no one is
lost, and be in the midst of the
flock so that they will feel your
presence, he said.
Lastly, he stressed that
one can only be effective when
he is open to the wisdom and
power of the Holy Spirit, the
agent of renewal.
Fr. Steve Olario, one of
the reactors, commented
that there are few priests
in the parish and they are
overwhelmed by the structure,
systems
and
multiplicity
of things to do including
administering the Sacraments.
These are some of the factors
that affect the quality of
shepherding their flock.

Fr. Medallo Valmores,

another reactor, believes that
preaching needs humility.
He said that for 33 years of
preaching, there were times
that he feels inadequate
despite the preparation but
those were the Sundays
that were well-received and
well- appreciated by the
parishioners. We should be
humble enough that whatever
appreciation people give to us,
in all humility let us return it
to the giver who is God, he
said.
Fr. Joel Lasutaz, SSS, said
that marketing is giving value
to the message and giving
value to the people. People
are valued and that is what
other sects are doing. They
give value to the people and
the message, including the
structure of the building, the
media equipment, and the
sound system. If we do value
the Word of God, then we also
value our relationship with
him. Our preaching gives
value to the message through
the way we speak, the way we
deliver it just like promoting,
advertising, and packaging it,
he said.
Abp. Ledesma Ledesma
thanked Fr. Mario for sharing
a lot of pointers in giving
homilies and witnessing, and
the challenge of how priests
can share the message in
the Archdiocese. If all of us
focus precisely on this in
fact, in Evangelii Gaudium,
thats the longest section of
Pope Francis exhortation
about giving homilies we
can be authentic messengers
of the Word. We pray, with
the urging and help of Fr.
Mario, we can continue our
pastoral help to many people
in our congregation, he said.

Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences Office of Consecrated Life FABC-OCL SYMPOSIUM IV

Consecrated Life at the Service of New Evangelization in Asia

Redemptorist Center, Pattaya, Thailand

July 20- 25, 2015

Promoting a genuinely open and fraternal life in our communities,

appreciating the uniqueness of persons and cultures, and helping all
persons to grow up to Gods dreams for them;
Appreciating multiculturalism as a value, not as a burden; learning the
richness of the cultures and settings where people come from;
Treating our colleagues, employees and domestic help as treasured
partners, creating the atmosphere and the structures for competent lay
persons to work with us with justice and respect;
Promoting unity and healing where there is division, bigotry or violence
against groups.
III. Mission
As missionary disciples, all Christians, particularly religious communities,
are urged to go forth to the existential peripheries. (Pope Francis to all
Consecrated People, Nov 21, 2014). We are asked to move from our comfort
zones to the margins, from mediocrity to passionate commitment.

In this year of Consecrated Life for the universal Church, we, the 101 delegates
of Religious Women and Men, members of Secular Institutes and Societies of
Apostolic Life, Priests, and Bishops, representing 17 countries of Asia, shared
our experiences and reflected on the theme of Consecrated Life at the Service
of New Evangelization in Asia.
Through an earlier questionnaire, FABC-OCL asked religious congregations
about their understanding and concrete experiences of New Evangelization, the
challenges and megatrends confronting them in Asia, and the pastoral resources,
priorities and prophetic role of their communities.
We noted Pope Francis call to wake up the world through communion and
mission, and three characteristics of a Church engaged in New Evangelization: to
be a Church of joy and mercy; to be a Church which is poor and for the poor;
and to be an open Church.
We listened to the addresses of Cardinal Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the
Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life,
and Archbishop Savio Hon Tai Fai, SDB, Secretary of the Congregation for
Evangelization of Peoples.
We listened to country reports that gave us an appreciation of the distinctive
context of each country, as well as the common challenges confronting all of us.
In Pattaya, we also visited and learned from church-affiliated centers for orphans,
differently-abled persons and marginalized women. But most of all, we listened
to each others stories and peak experiences of Gods goodness and mercy at the
heart of our vocation. We have developed friendships and a feeling of belonging
to one family. In this light, we reiterate the call to fidelity, to communion and to
mission.
I. Fidelity to Jesus Christ and to the charism of each consecrated community
The New Evangelization thrust of the Church calls us consecrated men and
women to return to our first love, who is God in Jesus Christ to whom we are
consecrated and to whom we are to be configured. This means to encounter the
person of the Son anew and allow the Spirit to transform us into his likeness so
that we can bear witness to him and to the Gospel for all peoples. This implies:

The new evangelization is to be carried out by means of attraction, not

by proselytizing (EG, 114). This means that we do mission following the via
pulchritudinis, the way of beauty. It is through loving service that the beauty of
the Gospel and the Christian faith shines through.
Trusting in Gods enabling grace to respond with creativity and effectiveness,
we face several megatrend challenges in Asia such as:
Massive poverty and caring for the least and the lowly;
Migrants, refugees and human trafficking;
Indigenous people and preservation of cultures;
Religious freedom and peace building;
Family life and responsible parenthood;
Youth and new ways of communication;
Care of the environment and the earth as our common home.
We need to persevere in our dialogue with the poor, with peoples of other
cultures and religions, as well as with the youth and faith-seekers.
We trust in our brothers in the hierarchy as well as our co-workers among the
laity to regard us as equal partners in responding to the signs of the times. We
need a profound prayer life and contemplative eyes to see Christ in the faces of
the poor and the marginalized.
Commitment
We, consecrated men and women, are being challenged anew to turn our
eyes towards the world, to share the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of
women and men of this age, especially those who are poor. . . who are afflicted
[discriminated against, and marginalized]. (GS, No. 1) Pope Francis has
sounded the call for us, consecrated persons, to wake up the world and shine with
the radiance of joy.
We recognize that we often appear as spiritless, lacking the fervor of a radical
follower of Jesus Christ. We fix our gaze on Him, and allow Jesus to touch us
daily. And He will come to us again, bless us, giving us a new heart.
To be faithful to our vocation as consecrated persons, we need to be:
Mystics: women and men for whom God is our first love and the source of
our joy and strength;
Prophets: Convinced disciples for whom the non-negotiable absolute is the
Gospel of Jesus;

An integral and life-long formation, which focuses on radical living of

the Gospel nurtured by a life of prayer, simple lifestyle, humility, and
docility;
Owning and living our charism;
Undergoing a process of conversion which involves us as persons and as
communities, as well as our structures and institutions;
Rediscovering the beauty of consecrated life with its joys, hopes and
challenges;
Becoming prophetic in living the Evangelical Counsels;
Deepening an awareness of Gods readiness for reconciliation and our
forgiveness at all times;
Experiencing God in real-life situations (natural and human-made
disasters, political issues, etc.) as sources of hope and mercy.

Jesus came among us in tender compassion, drew strength from oneness with
God, walked through the world excluding no one and used power only to heal
and do good. We want to walk through Gods world as He did. We rely on Gods
tender mercy, and on one another, and on all women and men of good will. And
we want to support anyone who wants to walk the path as Jesus did.

II. Communion
Taking up the Holy Fathers directive to religious to be experts in communion
and prophetic witnesses living by Gospel values, we commit ourselves to living
the inclusive love and solidarity that Jesus taught and lived by:

Like her, we, too, center our life on Gods word, trust God to give us wisdom
and strength, and say a full Yes. Then, like her, we hasten to serve those who
need us most.

Servants: Loving and humble men and women who truly put the needs of
others above our comforts, and who want to make a difference by creating a
world of mutual respect, care and compassion.

We seek the motherly intercession of Mary, the best model of discipleship

and Star of the New Evangelization. She listened to Gods word, trusted God,
said a whole-hearted Yesand then hastened to serve.

(The conference participants included 20 bishops [including three cardinals], 29 priests and brothers, 45 religious sisters, and 7 members of secular institutes. The participants included
bishops from China, Nepal, Mongolia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Korea, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the Philippines.
The FABC-OCL bishop-members are: Bp. Winston Fernando, SSS (Sri Lanka), chair; Abp. Albert dSouza (India); Abp. Antonio Ledesma, SJ (Philippines); and Bp. Silvio Siripong
Charatsri (Thailand), of the host Diocese of Chantaburi. Sr. Deanna Combong, RA, is the OCL secretary.
Archbishop Ledesma prepared the preliminary Lineamenta for the conference. He also helped draft the conferences Final Statement together with Fr. Joe Mannath, SDB, Sr. Victorina
Palanca, ICM, and Sr. Judette Gallares, RC. The statement is addressed to all religious communities in Asia.)

Catholic Evangelizers Give Doctrinal and

Biblical Orientation

The Deaf Ministry of

Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Oro has been very active in
promoting awareness on the
importance of communication
especially to the hearing
impaired. It is a church and
community based service for
those with hearing difficulty
who would otherwise be
neglected and relegated to the
margins of society.
One of the programs of
the Deaf Ministry is to give
volunteers training in sign
language. Two SpEd teachers
and one SpEd refresher/
volunteer completed
this
years three-week training in
sign language from April 13May 02 at Arantes Residence,
Agusan, Cagayan de oro City.
They are namely: Ms. Jean
Sabella, Ms. Maribel Salvidad

and Ms. Mary Joy Peligro.

The second batch had
their training on May 1131, 2015 from the parish
of
Mahinog,
Camiguin.
The 8 SpEd/teachers who
participated are: Frederick L.
Galla, Vanessa A. Vicente, Lara
Melissa M. Tabamo, Glenda
Galindo, Kimberly Rose S. Idol,
Clent Rey A. Abian, Venus A.
Small, and Jenneline S. Canete.
Now they have learned the
language of the deaf, with
Gods grace they can be
of greater help in the deaf
ministry program.
Communication is one
way of promoting love and
peace. Learning sign language
enables
communication
with the brothers and sisters
who are hearing impaired,
promotes friendship, respect
and as the ministry theme
says, makes a DEAFference.

Santuario Prepares for IEC 2016

September 19: The Eucharist and the

Dialogue of Cultures
October 17:
Santuario Eucaristico is launching
anew the Eucharistic Conferences
every 3rd Saturday of the month. This
is in view of the 51st International
Eucharistic Congress (IEC 2016),
which by Gods providence, is to be
held in Cebu in January 24-31, 2016.
The monthly conferences, which
used to be alternately Biblical and
Eucharistic Conferences, became in
2014 a monthly Bible Conference
at the request of the people who
expressed their desire to study and
learn the Bible. However, it has been
temporarily suspended this year. They
are now reviving it in response to the
pastoral call of the IEC to organize
Eucharistic Evangelization Programs
which is amply called Eucharistic
Symposium.
The
Santuario
Eucharistic
Symposium will be adapting the main
topics of the IEC 2016. The talks will
give a glimpse of the teachings of the
IEC 2016 and will surely deepen ones
understanding of the Mystery of the
Eucharist. Hopefully, this will empower
the participants to do justice and love
kindness by doing the corporal works
of mercy, out of the love of God in the
Eucharist. Below is the schedule:

Christ in the Youth, Our

Hope of Glory

November 21: The Eucharist: Dialogue

with the Poor and the
Suffering
December 5:

The Eucharist and Mary

Program Flow: Time: 8:30 10:30 am

Open Forum: 10:30 11:00 am
Snacks:

11:00 am

The invited speakers for the

symposium will come from the
Archdiocese, from the Congregation of
the Blessed Sacrament and from other
dioceses nationwide. Since this year is
the Year of the Poor, the speakers will
also link their talks with the theme:
Do Justice and Love Kindness.
Proposals and suggestions about
how learnings from the symposium can
be put into action will be welcomed. It
is hoped that every ESMP member may
not only be faithful to their monthly
pledge but also be concerned about
growing in faith through the Santuario
Eucharistic Evangelization.

A Journey of
By Sr. Pinky Barrientos, FSP
2nd of last series

Pauline heritage. The seed of

foundation was planted in Alba, Italy, on a
memorable night that divided the 19th and
20th centuries. The young Alberione, still a
seminarian at that time was praying before
the Blessed Sacrament exposed at the
Cathedral of Alba. While deep in prayer,
he felt the profound stirrings in his heart
to do something for the people of the new
century.
That initial spark from the Holy Spirit
finally took shape on August 20, 1914 upon
the foundation of the first branch of the
Pauline family, the Society of St. Paul; and
the birth of the Pauline charism, which
defines the spirituality and mission of the
Pauline family.
The congregation of the Daughters
of St. Paul was established a year later,
on June 05, 1915 with a handful of young
women whom Fr. James Alberione gathered
together to work for the apostolate of the
press. The fledging group led by Teresa
Merlo, who took the name Thecla on
her profession day in honor of St. Pauls
first woman disciple. She became the
first Mother General of the Daughters
of St. Paul, and closely collaborated with
Alberione in founding the other Institutes of
the Pauline Family. Today the Daughters of
St. Paul have 2,267 sisters whose apostolic
presence is spread in 51 countries across
five continents throughout the world.

Inspired by the zeal of the Apostle

Paul, who according to Alberione, would use
every available means of communication in
his time to spread the Gospel, he urged all
Daughters of St. Paul to travel the paths
of the world spreading the light of God
everywhere, carrying out a ministry similar
to that of St. Paul.
A hundred years after that initial
impulse, the flame of apostolic fervor
continue to burn in the heart of each
daughters of St. Paul. Despite diversities
in culture and language all the sisters are
united to a common goal to preach the
gospel and to make Jesus known in every
corner of the globe.
Every Pauline sister draws inner
strength from the well of Pauline spiritually
centered on Jesus Master, Way, Truth and
Life in carrying out of her apostolic ministry,
always striving to reach the same goal as
their patron, the Apostle Paul: It is no
longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.
The daily Eucharist, the Word of God, daily
prayer and fraternal communion are source
of light and support to help them discern
the signs of the times so as to respond to
the needs of the church and the World.
Venerable Thecla Merlo urged all the
Daughters of St. Paul to zealously proclaim
the gospel with hearts ablaze with Gods
love. How many people there are in
the world who do not know and love the
Lord! Apostles are needed but genuine

the apostolate of Jesus. the ever involving
technology of communication propelled
the Pauline sisters to embrace its challenges
with deep faith, always conscious of the

whenever they are, with whatever means
available. How many times do you ask
yourselves: how and toward what is
humanity moving, this humanity that is
constantly renewing itself on the face of
the earth(blessed James Alberione)
With the vast possibilities that
modern technology of communication has
open up, the sisters have enthusiastically
embraced its potentials to reach a broader
audience that would benefit from the
word of God. So, along
with book publishing and
other traditional means
of communicating the

even after the war is over in the battlefields, the silent COMPASSION BREAKS DOWN CULTURAL AND
war goes on in the hearts of the people of Mindanao.
RELIGIOUS BOUNDARIES
THE AWAKENING OF THE CHURCH

In another war in 2003, hundreds of Muslim and

Christian evacuees sought refuge at the parish church
and made the parish gymnasium their temporary home.
When the moon was bright, Muslim and Christian kids
would play together at the parish ground before the eyes
of the adults who squatted around the corners. At least
for a moment, the curse of war is forgotten. I remember
that day when they were returning to their places of
origin after six months. The Muslim evacuees were all
teary eyed men, women and children- as they bid us
goodbye. I guess the simple act of compassion shown
by the church had somehow corrected misconceptions
and broken down cultural and religious boundaries
that for many years had divided this small town.

The All-Out-War of President Estrada in 2000,

which displaced over a million civilians in Mindanao,
brought our parish in Pikit through a painful process
of soul searching. The parish, which was very
exclusive at that time, was divided whether or not to

and mediocrity, remembering the command of Jesus
in the Gospel that tells them to Love your neighbor as

HELPING THE POOR IS NOT A MATTER OF CHOICE

The parish then organized the Disaster Response

Team (DRT) composed mainly of young Muslim and
Christian volunteers. Whether under the scorching heat
of the sun or the pouring rain and amidst bullet fire,
these young volunteers distributed food to thousands
of starving evacuees in various evacuation centers
-Muslims, Lumads and Christians alike- demolishing
the myth that the war in Mindanao is religious in
nature. They would eat together at the same table, pray
together and even cry together when they would hear
that another baby had died in the evacuation center.
The parish soon realized that helping the poor is
not a matter of choice. For us Christians, it is a duty and
a social responsibility. After all, when you hear the cries
of mothers and children weeping in the night, you dont

of the oldest parishes in the Archdiocese of Cotabato.
Because of the Basic Ecclesial Communities or BECs,
Christians have developed deep religiosity and a strong
sense of community and responsibility towards fellow
Christians. What was considered as the strength of the
Church in Pikit, however, turned out also to be one of
her weaknesses.
Pikit Parish is situated right at the heart of an armed
rebellion being waged by the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front. The Christians are a minority, comprising only
35% of the total population. The MILF has maintained a
camp in the interior villages of the town.
CONSTANT WAR, SPORADIC PEACE

From 1997 until now, the people of this town have

experienced four major armed confrontations between
government troops and MILF forces that resulted in
massive evacuations of civilians, most of whom were
Muslims. Not only that, war has always been very divisive
and its corrosive effect on the relationship of people is
even more damaging than the physical destruction. In
war, even the civilians take sides the Christians with
the military and the Muslims with the rebels. And so,

A new context was evolving, therefore, a new

vision was required - one that responds to the demands
of the times. To imagine that vision, the church initiated
a series of consultations in the different districts and
BECs for the purpose of changing the vision-mission
of the parish. After almost one year of consultation,
church leaders during the assembly revised their
vision-mission. As expected, the new one was an
inclusive vision that integrated two very important
elements based in the context of the changing realities
in Mindanao and in the world. One was Inter-religious
Dialogue and the other was Peace-building. This new
vision-mission is now guiding the parish direction in
fulfilling her mission in the town of Pikit. The parish
has henceforth created a special ministry with full-time
staff members composed of Muslims and Christians
who implement Dialogue and Peace-building activities
at the parish and grassroots levels.
BUILDING BRIDGES RATHER THAN WALLS

Since then, the parish has been conducting

seminars on the Cultures of Peace and Dialogue. These
seminars, which normally last for three days are
participated in by Muslims, Christians and Indigenous
people. The main objective of the seminar is basically
to restore the broken relationship and to let the
participants realize that it is possible for Christians,
Muslims and indigenous tribes to work together for
peace and reconciliation even as a lot of people in
Mindanao believe it otherwise. The same seminars
have also been conducted with members of the military
and paramilitary troops, teachers, local government
officials, government line agencies and with the youth.
The parish also leads the annual celebration of
the Mindanao Week of Peace in Pikit, where different
sectors, including the local government unit and the
military, participate in various activities during the
week-long celebration.

June 17, 2012, the last day of the International Eucharistic Congress in
Dublin, Ireland, Pope Benedict XVI announced that the 51st International
Eucharistic Congress in 2016 will be held in Cebu City, Philippines.

What is a Eucharistic Congress?

A Eucharistic Congress is an international gathering of people which aims to:
Promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharistic in the life

and mission of the Catholic Church
Help improve our understanding and celebration of the liturgy
Draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist

The Congress normally takes place every four years.
The daily celebration of the Eucharist is at the heart of the Congress. The
wider program of the Congress includes other liturgical celebrations,
cultural events, catechesis, testimonies, and workshops during the
week of the congress.
Origin of the Eucharistic Congress

St. Peter Julian-Eymard

The work of the International Eucharistic Congress began in France in

1881 as a fruit of the Eucharistic apostolate of Saint Peter-Julian Eymard, the
Apostles of the Eucharist and of other outstanding figures such as:
Blessed Antoine Chevier
Antoine Chevier was a French priest of
the nineteenth century. He is the founders of
the work of the Prado, a clerical school.
Leon Dupont
He is known as The Holy Man of Tours,
or the Apostles of the Holy Face. He helped
spread various Catholic devotions such as
that of the Holy Face of Jesus and the nightly
Eucharistic adoration. He was declared
Venerable by the Holy See during Pope
Pius XIIs pontificate and currently awaits
Beatification.

Emilie Tamisier
She first proposed the ideas of rendering
public homage and veneration to the Blessed
Sacrament under the form and name of the
International Eucharistic Congress.
Spiritual and Social Importance of the IEC
The International Eucharistic Congress brings extraordinary honor to the
City and the Country hosting it.
It brings in many economic and social benefits.
More importantly, the moral and spiritual benefits are immeasurable.
The sharing of faith experience, occasioned by the attendance of delegates
all over the world, will bring a deeper appreciation of the Eucharist.
The Eucharist, the Sacrament of the Lords presence, is also the
Sacrament of His love. At the Last Supper, the Lord washed the feet of the
disciples, commanding them to wash each others feet. The Eucharistic
Congress gathers all to reflect on this mystery and to live it in their lives.

the different parishes of the

said.
We think of the strength

Despite challenges on all

constant reminder of Gods
fidelity and of his promise I am
