1. a) Discuss the effect of the type of Notch and velocity of the hammer on the results
of the impact test.

2. a) Give the classification of Aluminium alloys. What is the basis for such a
classification?
b) What are the castable aluminium alloys? Explain industrial uses along with
composition of six Alloys? [8+8]

3. What is the selection criterion for reinforcement of the composite material? Explain
the requisites of the matrix material in detail. [16]

4. A continuous and aligned glass fiber composite consists of 20 vol % of glass fibers
having a modulus of elasticity of 72 GPa in a polyester resin, having a modulus of 28
GPa, calculate the following:
i) Modulus of elasticity of the composite in longitudinal direction.
ii) Load carried by each fiber and the matrix phases when a stress of 50 MPa is
applied on a cross sectional area of 250 mm2
iii) Strain Sustained by each phase when the above stress is applied. [5+6+5]

5. a) How the mechanics of materials approach is used to determine the apparent


young’s modulus for a composite with an arbitrary shape?

1. How are the structural components of an aircraft manufactured with nickel base super
alloys? Describe hot isostatic pressing of nickel based alloy powders. [16]

2. a) How Aluminium alloys are welded? What are the difficulties that have encountered
in welding of aluminium alloys?
b) Give the composition of any two high temperature resistance Aluminium alloys.
Explain are their applications. [8+8]

3. Discuss the following:


i) Filament winding method
ii) Reaction injection moulding

4. The composite consists of a continuous glass-fiber reinforced epoxy resin produced


by using 60% by volume of E- glass fiber having a modulus of elasticity of Ef = 10.5
×106 Psi and a tensile strength of 350,000 Psi and a hardened epoxy resin with a
modulus of Em = 0.45 × 106 Psi and a tensile strength of 9000 Psi, calculate:
i) The modulus of elasticity ii)Tensile strength and
iii) Fraction of the lead carried by the fiber of the above composite material stressed
under isostrain condition. [16]
