1. (a) Explain different laws of fluid friction in detail?

(b) A siphon of diameter 20 cm connects two reservoirs having a difference in
elevation of 20 m. The length of the siphon is 500 m and the summit is 3
m above the water level in the upper reservoir. The length of the pipe from
upper reservoir to the summit is 100 m. Determine the discharge through the
siphon and also pressure at the summit by neglecting minor losses and taking
coefficient of friction as 0.005. [8+8]

2. (a) A pipe containing water at 172 kN/m2 pressure is connected by a differential

gage to another pipe 1.5 m lower than the first pipe and containing water at
high pressure. If the difference in heights of the two mercury columns of the
gage is equal to 75 mm, what is the pressure in the lower pipe? G of mercury
= 13.6.
(b) Obtain an expression used in inclined manometer and explain its use. [10+6]

3. (a) What is meant by smooth boundary and a rough boundary?

(b) Describe briefly the phenomenon of boundary layer separation.
(c) At what wind speed must a 127 mm diameter sphere travel through water to
have a drag of 5 N. [4+6+6]

4. (a) Prove that the boundary shear stress is directly proportional to the pressure
gradient and the boundary spacing for the case of laminar flow between parallel
flat plates when both the plates are at rest.
(b) What do you know about Couette flow? Explain [8+8]

5. (a) Give the complete classification of types of flow.

(b) Given the velocity field
v̄ = (6 + 2xy + t2 )ī − (xy 2 + 10t)j + 25k̄
Determine the acceleration of a particle at P(3,0,2) and at time t = 1. [8+8]

6. (a) Write a note on viscosity and compressibility.

(b) Calculate the velocity gradient at distances of 0,10,15 cm from the boundary
if the velocity profile is a parabola given by u = Ay 2 + By + C and with
the vertex 15 cm from the boundary, where the velocity is 100 cm/sec. Also
calculate the shear stress at these points if the fluid has a viscosity of 8.2 poise.

7. (a) What is sonic velocity? On what factor does it depends?.
(b) A gas velocity of 300 m/s is flowing through a horizontal pipe at a Section
where the pressure is 60 KN/m2 and temperature 40o C. The pipe changes in
diameter and at this section pressure is 90KN/m2 if the flow of gas is adiabatic
find the velocity of gas at this section. [6+10]

8. (a) What is momentum equation? Give applications of the equation.

(b) Water under a pressure of 345 kN/m2 is flowing through a 30 cm diameter
pipe at the rate of 0.25 m3 /s. If the pipe is bent by 135o to the horizontal,
