Time: 3hours Max.Marks:80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
---

1.a) Differentiate between SI and CI engines.

b) Differentiate between internal combustion and external combustion engines.[8+8]

2.a) Describe phenomenon of pre-ignition in S.I. engines and discuss its effect on the
performance.
b) Discuss the factors which promote pre-ignition. [8+8]

3.a) What is ignition delay? Explain its importance with regard to normal combustion.
b) List out various factors that influence ignition delay in C.I. engines. [8+8]

4. A gas engine having compression ratio of 6 develops an indicated power of

16.7 kW. The gas consumption is 15.3 m3/h measured at 250C and at a pressure of
12.7 cm of water above the atmospheric pressure 73.75 cm of mercury. The
calorific value of gas at 1bar and 00C was 18700 kJ/m3. Find the ratio of the
actual and the ideal thermal efficiencies. Take γ =1.4. [16]

5.a) Give two merits of rotary compressor over reciprocating compressor?

b) 2 kg/s of air enter the LP cylinder of 2 stage compressor. The overall pressure
ratio is 9:1. The air at inlet to the compressor is at 100 kPa and 350C. The index of
compression in each cylinder is 1.3. Find the intercooler pressure for perfect
intercooling. Also find the minimum power required for compression and
percentage saved over single stage compression. [5+11]

6.a) What do you understand by polytrophic efficiency in axial flow compressors.

b) List out the advantages and disadvantages of dynamic compressions as against the
positive displacement compressors. [8+8]

7. In a Bell Coleman refrigeration cycle, 10450 kJ of heat is extracted from the brine
per minute, which is circulated around the cold chamber at 00C and 1 bar. The air
coming out from the cold chamber is compressed to 2 bar isentropically by the
compressor. The compressed air is cooled to 400C without pressure loss in the
inter cooler. The cooler air expands isentropically in an air expander to the cold
chamber pressure of 1 bar and again taken to the chamber. Find
a) COP and
b) Power required to run the compressor. [16]
8.a) A Sling psychomotor reads 450C DBT and 380C WBT. Find the humidity ratio,
relative humidity, dew point temperature and enthalpy of moist air?
b) What is evaporative cooling and where is it used? [8+8]
