2a) Explain briefly various loss mechanisms in storage tanks for volatile liquids.
b) What are flanges? With the help of neat sketches explain the construction and
application of lapjoint and screened type of flanges. [8+8]

3a) Explain the nature of various stresses in a pressure vessel subjected to combined
loading.
b) Mention the significance of reinforcement to nozzles. What are the methods of
designing reinforcement to nozzles? Briefly discuss any one method with an
example. [8+8]

4a) Discuss the merits and demerits of fixed tube sheet, U tube and floating shell and tube
heat exchanger.
b) Derive the equation for the effectiveness of a parallel flow heat exchanger. [8+8]

5) Give the classification of Evaporator types and briefly explain each type. [16]

6) A distillation column is to be designed to separate A and B continuously. The feed is


35% of A and 65% B at its dew point. The distilled and residue compositions are
0.95 and 0.025 respectively.
a) Find the quantities of distillate and bottoms per hour?
b) Find the number of equilibrium stages required in the column if the
reflux ratio is 2.5? Assume the relative volatility as 2.5. [16]

7) Acetic anhydride is hydrolyzed in a CSTR by using large excess water. The initial
concentration of anhydride is 0.38 min −1 . Compute the volume of CSTR and PFR for
doing the above job. [16]

b) A high pressure steam pipe has 175mm inside diameter and 225mm outside diameter.
The pressure of steam inside the pipe is 250bar. Find out the maximum shear stress

3a) What is the purpose of conical heads? Determine the thickness of a conical head
having an apex angle of 450 . The diameter of the vessel is 1.8m. The allowable
stresses of the material of construction is 1200 Kg / cm 2 . Welded joint efficiency is 85
percent.
b) What is the function of gasket in flange joint? Explain the types of gaskets used in
flanged joints. [8+8]

4a) Make a comparison of double pipe heat exchangers and shell and tube heat exchanger
with respect to their performance, utility and economy.
b) An agitated and jacketed vessel contains M Kg of a liquid at a temperature t1 . The
specific heat of the liquid is C. It is heated by condensing steam at temperature T1 in
the jacket. U is the overall heat transfer coefficient. Derive an equation to find time
