All questions carry equal marks

1.a) A three hinged arch, of horizontal span L and central rise yc is hinged at the springs
and crown. It is subjected to a rise in temperature of toC. If α is the coefficient of
expansion of the arch material. Obtain an expression for the vertical rise of the
crown.
b) If L = 20 m, yc = 5 m, t = 100 C and α = 18 x 10-6/ 0C, find the vertical shift of the
crown. [8+8]

2.a) What is the effect of temperature rise in three-hinged and two hinged arches.
b) Derive the expression to find the horizontal thrust induced in a two- hinged arch of
horizontal span L, subjected to a rise in temperature of t0 C. If E I = flexural rigidity
and α = coefficient of expansion of arch material. [8+8]

3.a) What is the difference between three-hinged, two-hinged and fixed arches in respect
of indeterminacy?
b) Formulate the three equations to evaluate the horizontal thrust (H), moments MA
and MB at the fixed ends A and B of a fixed arch of horizontal span L, central rise
yc (EI = flexural rigidity). [8+8]

4. Using Kanis’s method analyze a two continuous beam ABC having the span
AB = 4 m and BC = 5 m. The end A is fixed while the end C is simply supported.
On AB there is u.d.1. of 20 kN/m while carries a load of 10 kN at 2m from C. The
moment of inertia of BC is twice that of AB. Sketch the B.M. and S.F.D. [16]

5. Analyse the two-span continuous beam loaded as shown in figure by the slope
deflection method, if the moment by inertia of span AB = I, while that of BC =
3I.Sketch the B.M and SFD. [16]
6. During loading the support C of the continuous beam ABCD shown in figure settles
by 10 mm. Using moment distribution method, obtain the support moments and
sketch the B.M.D. Take E = 200 x GN/m2 and I = 80 x 10-6m4. [16]

7. Write the flexibility matrix for a straight prismatic member AB having length L.
C.S.A (A), modules of elasticity E, flexural rigidity EI, if it is (a) Simply supported
as shown in figure (a) and (b) cantilever, fixed at A and free at B as shown in figure
with reference to the coordinates shown in figure. [16]

8.a) What is Finite element method? Summarize the steps involved in the Finite element
analysis procedure.
b) Briefly discuss the use of one, two and three dimensional elements used for
discretizing in finite element method along with axisymmetric elements. [8+8]
