1.a) State ohm’s law. What are its limitations?


b) Derive an expression for the effective resistance of three resistors connected in series.
c) Derive an expression for the effective resistance of three resistors connected in parallel.

2.a) Using star delta transformation find the current and power supplied by the battery as
shown in figure.
b) Describe in detail the steps to apply superposition theorem. [10+6]

3.a) What is meant by inductance? Obtain the expression for the same.
b) A magnetic circuit has a uniform cross sectional area of 5 sq.cm and a length of 25 cm. A
coil of 100 turns is wound uniformly around the magnetic circuit. When the current in the
coil is 2A, the flux is 0.3 wb. Calculate
i) Magnetizing force.
ii) Relative permeability.
iii) Magnetic flux density. [6+10]

4.a) A capacitor having a capacitance of 10 µ F is connected in series with a non inductive


resistance of 120 Ω across 100V, 50Hz. Calculate the power, current and the phase
difference between current and voltage.
b) In a R-C series circuit, voltage across the combination is given by 40 Sin(2000t + 45),
R = 10 Ω . The current leads the voltage by π radians. Find the value of C. Also find the

expression for current. [8+8]
5.a) Draw a no load phasor diagram and explain it.
b) Enumerate the various losses in a transformer. How can these losses be minimized.

6.a) Derive from first principles an expression for the emf induced in the armature of the DC
machine.
b) Explain in detail, the principle of operation of a simple loop DC generator. [4+12]

7.a) Explain the working of a alternator in detail.


b) Derive the emf equation of the synchronous generator. [8+8]

8.a) How can the range of a voltmeter be extended?


b) How can the range of an ammeter be extended?
c) Give the advantages of moving iron instruments over moving coil instruments. [5+5+6]

1a) What is electric current? Explain in detail the conventional flow of electrons in a circuit.
b) How are the materials classified based on their conductivity? Explain with suitable
examples. [8+8]

2.a) Find the equivalent resistance between the terminals x and y in the circuit as shown in the
figure.

b) Describe in detail the steps to apply Thevenin’s theorem. [12+4]

3.a) Obtain the expression for reluctance in a composite magnetic circuit.


b) A circular ring of magnetic material has a length of 1m and a cross sectional area of
0.001 sq.cm. Saw cut of 5mm width is made in the ring. Calculate the magnetizing
current required to produce a flux of 0.1wb in the air gap, if the ring is uniformly wound
with 200 turns. Take relative permeability of ring material as 500. Neglect leakage.

4.a) Explain the behaviour of AC through R-L-C Parallel circuit.


b) The applied voltage to an AC circuit is V = 200 Sin 314t, and the current flowing is
i = 20 Sin314t. Find the following
i) Peak values of voltage and current.
ii) Frequency of the voltages and current.
iii) Effective values of voltage and current.
iv) The circuit element and its value.
v) Power factor.
vi) Draw the phasor diagram. [6+10]
5. A 100KVA lighting transformer has a full load loss of 3 KW; the loss is being equally
divided between iron and copper. During a day the transformer operates on full load for 3
hours, on half load for 4 hours, the output being negligible for the remainder of the day.
Calculate the all day efficiency. [16]

6.a) Differentiate between lap winding and wave winding.


b) A dynamo has a rated armature current at 250A. What is the current per path of the
armature if the armature winding is lap or wave connected? The machine has 12 poles.
c) Give the applications of the DC generator and DC motor. [4+8+4]

7.a) Explain the revolving field type and the revolving armature type alternators.
b) A 6 pole DC generator is running and producing a frequency of 60 Hz. Calculate the
revolutions per minute of the generator. If the frequency is decreased to 20 Hz, how
many number of poles will be required if the generator is to be run at the same speed.
c) Give the difference between a DC generator and an alternator. [6+6+4]

8.a) Differentiate between moving coil and moving iron instrument.


b) Explain with neat sketch the air friction damping. [8+8]

1.a) A copper wire of diameter 1cm has resistance of 0.15 Ω . It was drawn under pressure so
that its diameter was reduced to 50%. What is the new resistance of the wire?
b) State and explain Faradays law of electromagnetic induction. [10+6]

2.a) State Thevenin’s theorem. Discuss its significance on the network theory.
b) For the circuit shown in figure, find the resistance between the terminals A and B.
[4+12]

3.a) Prove K = M L1 L2 .
b) A primary coil having an inductance of 100 µ H is connected in series with a secondary
coil of 240 µ H and the total inductance of the combination is measured as 146 µ H .
Determine the coefficient of coupling. [6+10]

4.a) A series circuit with a resistance R = 10 Ω and inductance 20 mH has a current of


i = 2 sin 500t. Obtain the total voltage across the series circuit and angle by which the
current lags the voltage.
b) In a circuit the voltage across and the current through a load are given by (70+j0) V and
(6+j8) A respectively. Determine the active and reactive powers and also the power
factor. [8+8]

5.a) What is the difference between an ideal transformer and a practical transformer?
b) Derive the approximate equivalent circuit of a 1 phase transformer. [4+12]
6.a) Sketch the O.C characteristics of a self excited DC generator. Explain in detail about the
critical speed and the critical resistance.
b) Explain the motoring and generator actions of a DC machine. [10+6]

7.a) Give the constructional features of a synchronous motor.


b) Explain the working of a synchronous motor. [8+8]

8.a) Why is the scale of a MI instrument non uniform? Explain.

1.a) A 100W, 250V bulb is put in series with a 40W, 250V bulb across a 500V supply. What
will be the power consumed by each bulb? Will such a combination work?
b) State and explain Kirchoff’s current law and voltage law. [10+6]

2.a) A generator feeds a load resistance RL through a network. How can you find the value of
RL for maximum power transfer?
b) Using Thevenin's theorem, find the current through RL = 10 Ω , in the network shown in
figure. [6+10]

3.a) State and explain faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction.


b) Write short notes on Lenz's law.
c) A coil of 1000 turns of wire uniformly wound on a non-magnetic ring of mean diameter
40 cm and cross-sectional area 20 sq.cm. Calculate
i) The inductance of the coil.
ii) The energy stored in the magnetic field when the coil is carrying a current of 15A.
iii) The emf induced in the coil if this current is completely interrupted in 0.01
second. [5+3+8]

4.a) A coil of power factor 0.9 is in series with a 120 µ F capacitor. When connected to a
50Hz supply, the potential difference across the coil is equal to the potential difference
across the capacitor. Find the resistance and inductance of the coil.
b) A metal filament lamp rated 750W, 110V is to be connected in series with a capacitor
across a 220V, 50Hz supply. Calculate
i) The capacitance required.
ii) The power factor. [8+8]
5.a) A 3300/220 V, 30KVA, 1 phase transformer takes a no load current of 1.5A when the
low voltage winding is open. The iron loss component is 0.4 A. Find:
i) No load input power.
ii) Magnetizing component.
iii) Power factor of no load current.
b) Why is a transformer rated in KVA?
c) Explain the various features of an ideal transformer. [10+2+4]

6.a) Derive the expression for the armature torque and shaft torque of a DC motor.
b) The armature of a 6 pole, DC shunt motor takes 300 A at the speed of 400 revolutions per
minute. The flux per pole is 75 mWb. The number of armature turns is 500. The torque
lost in windage, friction and iron losses can be assumed a 2.5%. Calculate.
i) Torque developed by the armature.
ii) Shaft torque.
iii) Shaft power in KW. [6+10]

7.a) An induction motor cannot run at synchronous speed. Explain.


b) Briefly explain why a synchronous motor has no starting torque?
c) List some application of synchronous motor. [5+6+5]

8.a) Give some applications of the MI and the MC instrument.


b) When cost is the main consideration for an instrument, which method of controlling
torque is to be maintained? Why? [8+8]
