1. (a) Give the classification of solid state MW devices along with examples?
(b) Why conventional tubes and solid state devices can not be used at microwave
frequencies? [8+8]

2. (a) Describe and distinguish between the up converter and down converter modes
of operation of parametric amplifiers. List out their applications.
(b) List out the merits, demerits and applications of Tunnel diodes at microwave
frequencies. [10+6]

3. (a) Why do practical Klystron amplifiers generally have more than two cavities ?
How can broadband operation be achieved in multi cavity Klystron amplifier.
Beam voltage Vo : 800V , Beam current Io = 25mA, Frequency f = 10GHz ,
Gap spacing in either cavity d=2mm, Spacing between two cavities L=3 cm
Effective shunt impedance Rsh = 40KΩ.
Determine :
i. The electron velocity
ii. The transit time of electron
iii. The input voltages for maximum output voltage
iv. The power delivered to the load. [8+8]

4. (a) Compare and contrast Microwave integrated circuit with Monolithic Microwave
integrated circuit.
(b) What are the requirements to be considered for designing of a Microwave
integrated circuit?
(c) Explain the applications of Microwave integrated circuits. [6+5+6]

5. (a) How is bunching achieved in a cavity magnetron. Explain the phase focusing
effect.
(b) Discuss types of magnetrons and list the important applications. [8+8]
