Nearly 100 Calgary-based ready mix

truck drivers stood solid on numerous
picket lines, a day after Burnco Rock
Products Ltd. initiated a lockout and
turned to the non-union Strathmorebased plant to continue their operations.
Members of the Teamsters Local
Union 362 were locked out Monday at
five Burnco plants Okotoks, Airdrie,
Cochrane, and two sites in Calgary following a standstill in contract negotiations.
Discussions had been ongoing between the union members and the company since May 31 when the contract
expired. Days before union members
were expected to vote on a presented
offer, employees found themselves lockout. As a response to the lockout, the 96
employees picketed at six different locations, including Strathmore, where local
drivers are making up for the shortage.
This is a non-union plant and theyre
doing all of our work in the city, so we
are out here today to slow the process
down, said strike captain Tyler Welsh
in Strathmore on Aug 11.
If they were just doing their own
work we wouldnt be here, but theyre
not. Theyre going into Calgary and doing our work. So now its affecting us.
We were going to vote on an offer this
Thursday but they locked us out on
Monday. They locked us out before we
even had a chance.
The parties were stuck in a mandatory two-week cooling off period after
mediation, and in that timeframe the
union applied for a strike vote on July
30. Although Burnco did present union
representatives with an offer on Aug. 4,
business agent for Teamsters Union Local 362 Bernie Haggarty set the vote for
Aug. 13 to allow those affected to have
one-week notice. As Burnco representatives felt this was a substantial delay,
the company hoped the lockout notice
would prompt the offer to be presented
to affected employees sooner.

Stab victim checked

into hospital
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

A young man was brought
to the Strathmore Hospital
early Saturday morning, after an accidental stumble
caused him to fall onto a paring knife, leaving him with
life-threatening injuries.
The male, estimated to
be approximately 18 years
old, was carrying camping
equipment up a flight of
stairs from the Powwow in
Siksika on Aug. 8, when he
tripped and fell onto a knife.
The blade pierced the individual near his heart and after ambulances brought him
to the Strathmore Hospital,
STARS Air Ambulance was
dispatched at 5:48 a.m. and

New recruits
Sultan Nelson (middle) was
surrounded by his family to
take his Oath of Office in front
of town council on Aug. 5.
His mother, Councillor Denise
Peterson (second from left),
swore him in.
Firefighter Paul Kerpel (r) also
took his oath Aug. 5. Councillor Pat Fule swore him in. Steve
Bowden and Lesley Boutilier
were among the four new firefighters, but were absent during the council meeting.

Miriam Ostermann Photos

transported him to Calgary

Foothills Hospital.
It was bad the way it
went down, said Gleichen
Staff Sgt. James McLaren.
Thats all it was, it was an
accident. It was a little bit
confusing when we first
took statements, because it
originally wasnt reported
to us, it came through EMS.
Then we had to play catch
up to get our investigation
done. Its a pretty thorough
investigation that weve
done.
McLaren
added
that
roughly a half-a-dozen stabbings occur in the area per
month, but they usually resemble pokings and slashings. The incident is said to
be non-criminal.

New legislation calls for new

fireworks bylaw
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

As the hammer was brought down in
Ottawa to affect legislative changes to
the Natural Resources Canada Explosive Act and Regulations and a new Alberta fire code 2014, which was adopted at the end of February, Strathmore
introduced a new bylaw to solely focus
on the issue of fire works. The new bylaw, a linchpin to the all-encompassing
original fire bylaw, will serve to accommodate the newfound need to deal
with fireworks within the town.
The Explosive Safety and Security
Branch (ESSB) an organization which
also adopted other modifications to the
Alberta Building Code and the National
Energy Code for Buildings five months
ago - monitors and polices fireworks
within Canada through the Explosive
Act.
As a result of the changes, Strathmore is required to monitor recording
of files, reports, and returns in relation
to fireworks. While the issue was previously identified in the existing 2005 fire
bylaw 05-02, the information contained
therein remained basic.
The new bylaw that Im proposing
identifies what the fireworks are in the

Town of Strathmore, and it also provides details for the licensing of pyro
technicians and persons to fire or set
off fireworks, said Muir Furzer, Strathmores fire chief, at the town council
meeting on Aug. 5.
It also provides documentation to
provide a paper trail to monitor the different types of fireworks that are being
used in Strathmore, and the different
levels of certification by pyro technicians that are hired by different venues
within Strathmore. This is the idea of
our bylaw.
As fireworks are explosive devices,
classified as dangerous goods under
the Alberta Fire Code when used improperly, bylaw 15-16 prohibits the
possession, purchase, sale, storage, or
discharge of fireworks by anyone who
does not posses a valid Fireworks Display Supervisor card.
While Furzer said the new bylaw
will provide authority to use greater
enforcement in handing of fireworks,
when asked whether the town bylaw
officers would be required to use a
different level of vigilance by Councillor Denise Peterson, he said the bylaw
under the Municipal Government Act
(MGA) provides the municipality with
a system for licences, permits, and ap-

provals. Furthermore, it will aid in the

protection and the safety of Strathmore
residents.
Councillor Peterson stated she believed it to be an excellent bylaw that
was well presented and established, a
comment that was echoed by Councillor Brad Walls.
I commend [the fire chief] on getting a bylaw together so that we would
be able to record and figure out whos
doing what, and I really like this bylaw
I think its going to be really good for
this town, said Councillor Brad Walls.
Town council unanimously approved
the stand-alone bylaw, with its purpose
to regulate fireworks within Strathmore,
during their regular council meeting on
Aug. 5.

Q: What value does a cemetery have?

A: : A cemetery is a place where lives are

commemorated, deaths are recorded, families

are reunited, memories are made tangible,
and love is undisguised. Communities accord
respect, families bestow reverence, historians
seek information, and our heritage is thereby
enriched. Testimonies of devotion, pride, and
remembrance are carved in stone to pay warm
tribute to the accomplishments and the life,
not the death, of a loved one. The cemetery
is homeland for family memorials that are a
sustaining source of comfort to the living. A
cemetery also serves the purpose of creating
a location for a family to visit to express their
grief in the years following a death. In many
cases when cremated remains are scattered a
family will purchase a plot so that they have a
location to visit and a permanent remembrance
of the deceased.

Centennial celebration
Ready mix truck drivers Stephane Joly (l-r), Jason Forthing, Tyler Welsh, Don Morros, Tony Mackinnon, and Steve Laking picketed outside the Strathmore BURNCO Rock Product Ltd. on Aug. 11.
After a standstill in negotiations, BURNCO locked-out 96 union drivers, and utilized the services of
Strathmore-based truck drivers.

Strathmore-based driver to carry the load

Continued from Page 1

They decided they werent going to
present our offer to the membership on
a timely basis, so we just had to show
them that were serious and that it was
our intention, through the lockout, to
give them an opportunity to hold a vote
on the offer prior to the lockout going
into affect, said Michael Powell, chief
executive officer with Burnco Rock
Products Ltd., who added the strike efforts are slowing down services.
These employees are important to
us, theyre important to the service we
deliver. Obviously theyre impeding
the work of the Strathmore drivers, but
we have a contingency plan that were
working and trying to get the material
to our customers the best we can.
According to Haggarty, the company
has been utilizing replacement workers, plant workers, and management
some flown in from other parts of
western Canada - to work out of Strathmore. For those standing on the picket
lines, including half a dozen employees
who protested in Strathmore on Aug.
11, issues are not concerning money,
but rather seniority, respect, and safety.
While their demands include double
time after 12-hour work days, most
drivers are outraged with proposed
changes to their seniority statuses.
For employees such as Don Morros, who worked his way up the ladder over the past 18 years currently
sitting close to the top 10 protecting
their seniority is of utmost importance
to insure their lifes work wont turn
obsolete.
Its a good company I enjoyed coming to work here, but I was talking to

union reps here and seniority is the

mainstay of the union, its what Ive
worked for, said Morros.
When I started I was 29 years old
and at the bottom of the list. Now Im
starting to move up. Theres a hundred
and something drivers and I think Im
up there number 12 or 11 and they
want to take that away from me. Its just
not right. Thats not going to happen.
Its not an issue of money. I understand
with the economy if they want to do
a wage freeze I dont think anybody
would have a problem with that, but
they said it has nothing to do with seniority but it does.
However, according to Powell, stripping employees of their seniority is not
part of the offer, but instead the company was looking to tweak seniority to
allow Burnco to work more efficiently
and to better service their customers.
He added such elements include the
hire and use of more drivers allowing
for shorter shifts and addressing some
safety concerns. Yet Haggarty, who was
present at the negotiating table, disagreed.
They want to strip the seniority
language out of the collective agreement, he said. To them theres no respect. They think they can bully them
around? Theyre not going to take it.
Its not about the money. Were realists.
We understand that the economy has
turned and the price of oil affects us,
but were not about to let the seniority
be stripped for one.
Powell said he is looking forward for
the employees to have an opportunity
to vote on the proposed offer. Currently
the vote continues to be scheduled for
Aug. 13.

and will continue to improve with all cancers.

In an effort to modernize Strathmores fire bylaw,
and divert from stereotyping and discrimination,
town council approved an amendment that also
tackles the issue of fire pits a growing concern for
local politicians.
Bylaw 05-02, which was established in 2005, was
outmoded and required adjustments to the fire safety inspection procedures, fee for servicing scheduling, removal or reference to fireworks, and fire pit
application and permitting.
The new bylaw will regulate Strathmores fire pit
types, sizes, fees, and allow for additional control
lacking previously with numerous illegal fire pits
and inadequate record keeping.
While the amendment focuses on bringing the
bylaw up-to-date, council remained concerned
about fire pits currently situated within the town
boundaries.
The terminology that we used in the old bylaw
was very dated and if I may say so prejudicial and
sexist, and I wanted to have something that was
politically neutral and so I had to remove some of
the language, said Muir Furzer, Strathmores fire
chief. The fire pits have been a big challenge for
the town over the years. Under the old bylaw we
didnt have that control. Basically a person applied
for a fire pit and it was accepted as is, no discussion. We kept the reports, but they had no significance. They had no meat.
The proposal, which was brought before town
council on Aug. 5, aims to provide fire service and
develop regulations for controlling open fires. The
new permits will require an applicant to provide
the town with documentation about the fire pit,
drawings, engineering for elaborate systems, and
photographs of its proposed location. An inspector
will then sign off and issue a permit number. While

Furzer assured council that limitations are in place

regarding the size of a fire pit and the various types
of pits available, council was disheartened to hear
the amendment will have no affect on existing pits.
You build a fire pit thats half the length of the
yard and as tall as the building, you could barbecue
a cow on there, said Councillor Steve Grajczyk, regarding a specific pit in town. They smoke tremendously we must control it somehow.
According to Furzer, who said hes been approached about several such sites, some of these
fire pits slipped through the cracks previously and
now the towns hands are tied. However, the permit
is not transferrable to new ownership of the property, if the current occupant were to move.
Under the new bylaw, a new fire pit application
permit allowed for all fire pits to be registered within the town as of Jan. 1, 2015.
So when a person comes back and hes going
to ask I want to build this big Taj Mahal, we have
first say on it, said Furzer. Under the bylaw - a fire
service bylaw - the fire chief has the final authority
and can say yes or no. I can guarantee you based
upon whats happened the last couple of years, its
going to be regulated very strictly.
Fire pits will now be issued serial numbers in order to be tracked by the town. According to Furzer,
more than 500 permits have been issued over the
past three years and the creation of a database was
established two years ago.
Council also raised concern with insurance and
informing the public. In response, Furzer mentioned including a letter into residents utility inserts upon approval of the amendment.
I think its really timely and extremely useful,
and I believe there are many homeowners in our
community that want to ensure their fire pits meet
code, said Councillor Peterson.
Strathmore town council approved the amendment, fire bylaw 15-18, unanimously on Aug. 5.

Music Festival aims to keep STARS in sky

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Born out of the devastation of the
catastrophic 2013 Alberta floods, the
Southern Alberta Music Festival continues to gather momentum and once
again raises money for a crucial emergency service STARS Air Ambulance.
The two-day-long country, blues, and
rock n roll event is growing exponentially in popularity and for the second
year is donating its proceeds to the
charitable, non-profit organization.
Because were rural and if anything
were to happen out here, STARS is so
important to rural communities, said
Donna Biggar, manager for Aspen
Crossing. Since we had the flood the
first year, we thought it just feels good
to do it for a good cause, and to have
the local artists working for the same
kind of things that need donations in
their own communities. STARS seems
to fit all of southern Alberta, so thats
kind of why stars was picked.
When organizers Jason Thornhill
and Larry Vannatta launched the festival in 2013, proceeds were donated to
High River the first year, and STARS the
second year. Having already attracted
200 people in its infancy, crowds have
continued to grow each year and numbers are expected to accumulate to 500
spectators this year.
Continuing to feature local southern
Albertan artists such as Drew Gregory,

Sykamore, and Lyndsay Butler, 23 musicians were selected from a line-up of

40 acts.
Thats kind of the theme behind this
whole thing, give everyone a chance to
play, said Vannatta, who will continue
with tradition and perform this year. I
would think a lot of it has to do with
the atmosphere of having fun and being friends. Nobody has a big head
here. There are no stars but theyre all
stars, because its all going to a good
cause, which is STARS. A lot of people
send in their stuff to us, and of course
we cant put in everybody.
Dr. Greg Powell founded STARS Air
Ambulance in 1985, known back then
as the Lions Air Ambulance Service.
Over the past three decades the service
has expanded to include bases in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan
and Manitoba, and flew 1,839 missions
last year.
As the organization is non-profit and
relies on donations an average flight
costing $5,400 with costs not being recouped by the patient fundraisers,
such as the Southern Alberta Music
Festival, are crucial to their operations.
Last year the event donated $6,000 to
the organization.
Events like this really do play a huge
role in STARS in helping us with all of
our training programs, with our emergency link centre, with the actual helicopters and in whatever capacity we
can just being there for the next patient,

New classes offered for parents

JENN PAGE
Strathmore Pregnancy Care Centre

The Strathmore Pregnancy Care
Centre is aware that early interactions
with children not only improve their
mental development but their emotional and physical development, and
are therefore launching three different parenting classes.
The Babys First Year class is for
any parent, ranging from first-timers
to those more experienced but wanting to continue to grow their skills.
This class allows parents to include
their child in an interactive playtime
over a six-week period.
Topics addressed range from welcoming the new baby into the family
and home, infant behaviour, physical
development, physical safety, emotional and social safety, as well as how
and when to discipline. This class offers practical advice and encouragement, the opportunity to discuss
questions and concerns, and helps to
build confidence as a parent.
Our Literacy, Parenting and Rhythm
Time class is full of energy and excitement. This eight-week class for

parents and tots provides a safe place

to learn and have fun with others in
a similar stage of life. Classes will be
geared to the age and literacy level of
the children in the class.
During the rhyme portion of the
class, there will be singing and sharing nursery rhymes to introduce language, rhyme, rhythm and music.
Reading is another important literacy
skill and books with colourful pictures are a great place to start with
young babies.
Reading to your child can help them
develop language and recognition
skills. This class is a positive way to
bond with your child in a fun and interactive activity.
The Parenting Education program
helps those wanting to increase their
knowledge and skills in parenting.
This six-week program is designed
to focus on the critical years, age two
to 12, by building strong parent-child
relationships, and instilling important
qualities such as self-esteem, courage,
responsibility and cooperation. This
program will also teach effective communication skills and how to better
understand the behaviour of the child.

its crucial in terms of helping us, said

Megan Thomson, manager of events for
STARS.
STARS started in Alberta with the
intention to serve people either living
or traveling in rural or remote areas in
the province. The fact that we get support from the people who actually live
in those areas, is unbelievable. We are
here to serve the community, but we
also wouldnt be here without the support of the community.
While most of the proceeds are being
donated to STARS, Biggar said the festival is also important to the area, as the
Arrowwood Agricultural Society, the Arrowwood 4-H club, and the Mossleigh
Lions Club who run the beer gardens
also benefit from the donations.
The Southern Alberta Music Festival
will take place Aug. 21-21. Tickets are
$80 for the whole weekend, $70 for Saturday only, or $25 for Friday only. Pasture camping is available for $45 for the
weekend. For more information visit aspencrossing.com.

years ago. She trained in Canada,
the United States and India before eventually opening her practice in Strathmore last June. She
also helps treat anything from a
simple cold to chronic diseases

have a healthy pregnancy.
Eventually parents of autistic children began to approach
her as they were seeing autistic symptoms in their children
or were seeing regeneration in
their childs state with the other
modes of healthcare. Kiermay
makes sure to give her full attention to the case at hand and
does a lengthy diagnosis to find
the symptom that is particular to
that child. She explains that there
is a large spectrum of symptoms
that can show that a person has

autism; however she looks for

the one that stands out the most,
such as a verbal delay or a need
to be constantly around others.
Once she has given the child a
remedy she makes sure to monitor them closely by seeing them
at least once a month and doing
a GAPS protocol, which is essentially a casein and gluten-free
diet.
We support good nutrition so
that facilitates a detoxification in
environmentally toxics that may
be a contributor in autism, said
Kiermay.
She also makes sure to keep

e-mail so as to constantly teach
them about the 200-year-old
practice of homeopathy.
Kiermays work in her practice
is not the only way she is involved in helping those with autism. She has also done a number

Council approves new off-site levy rates

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

After months of working on a bylaw to bring offsite levy rates up to date, town council approved
the proposed 2015 rates a 10 per cent increase
from when the levies were last updated in 2010.
The off-site levy rates, a requirement for developers to pay for costs as a result of their development, were last updated to reflect the 2011 rates.
While off-site levy rates are difficult to compare
between municipalities, due to varying projects
and pricing, Werner Fisher, director of planning
and development for the Town of Strathmore, said
Strathmores rates are still among the lowest.
I believe that our rates are definitely, based on
what Ive seen, at the lower end, said Fisher. Our
general assessment is 96,000 per hectare. The increase of the rates, the actual off-site levy rate is
going up 10 per cent. A 10 per cent increase since
2010 is, I dont think unreasonable.
Strathmore collects levies for transportation,
sewer and water, and storm water management.
Over the last six months, the towns planning department, director of public works and Allnorth
Engineering prepared the bylaw, which was proposed during town councils regular council meeting on Aug. 5.
It sounds to me like the directors have done
their due diligence and it seems were on the lower end, were still going to have developers come

in so I support this, said Councillor Brad Walls.

According to town staff, developers did show
concern in regards to the off-site levy project
list. Contained on that list are: the master servicing study for the transportation plan; the master
servicing study for the storm water management
plan; the completion of a functional design of
George Freeman Trail; and proposed water transmission project, storm water project, and widening of George Freeman Trail bridge.
Most developers are concerned that we are
continuing to move those projects ahead quickly
as they need that information in their developments, said Strathmores Director of Engineering
Gord Elenko.
So those are projects that are on the off-site
levy project list and developers are keen on getting those projects moved forward so they can include that information into their current projects.
The Town of Strathmore enlisted Allnorth Engineering to review, update, and justify the capital
projects and new proposed capital projects listed
in the previous bylaw 11-04. Through existing
financial information and technical documents,
the town was able to identify the infrastructure
required for the future and the approximate cost
for a 20-year time period, when the population is
estimated to reach 29,381.
The new off-site levy rates came into effect immediately on Aug. 5, and the Bylaw 15-17 will be
made available on the towns website.

Province-wide open farms in Strathmore

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

A partnership between the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society and Community Futures
Wildrose championed for local businesses to be
a part of a province-wide initiative that is educating Albertans about the origins and production of
their food.
As part of the Alberta Open Farm Days, which
is currently in its third year, roughly 180 residents will have a chance to enjoy a farm-to-table
experience at the Rocking R Guest Ranch, which
showcases locally grown food and the talents of
Calgary-based chef Judy Wood. As part of the collaborative, two-day event, community members receive a back-stage pass to visit five local host farms
for a free educational experience.
Participating in the Alberta Open Farm Days for
the first time, the ag society and Community Futures Wildrose simply refused to pass up the opportunity when it presented itself this year.
Theres a real trend that people want to connect
more with the people that are providing the food
and are eager to support local food producers,
said Tera Spyce, supporter for the Alberta Open
Farm Days, with Community Futures Wildrose.
It needed a champion to get it going and I ap-

proached the agricultural society with the idea.

Over 70 farms are participating on Aug. 23, and
locally include Country Lane Farms, Field Stone
Fruit Wines, Four Sister Farms, Poplar Bluff Organics, and Riqueza Riding Academy.
Poplar Bluffs Organics, a wholesale organic vegetable farm, supplies 70 restaurants in Calgary and
area, can be found in health food stores, and has
been featured on the Food Network. As one of the
participating farms next weekend, the 60-acre operation is opening up the doors to their organic
carrot farm.
We thought it was important to be buying local produce and for people to know there are
vegetable being grown in this area, said Rosemary Wotske, co-owner of Poplar Bluff Organics.
Where we are here in the Strathmore area is probably one of the best places on the planet for growing root crops.
To take part in the Alberta Open Farm Days culinary event on Aug. 22, which features entertainment including main act Over the Moon activities and a dinner, tickets can be purchased for $75
each, or $125 for two, through Eventbrite or by
contacting Rocking R Guest Ranch at (403) 9346974. For more information about the weekend

O brother, where art thou?

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
A couple of weeks ago, I had a chance to watch
the chuckwagon races in the town booth. We use this
booth to thank volunteers, board members, and if
possible, people whove worked in other ways to help
Strathmore.
I actually got crap from my publisher for slacking
on my column lately, but heck ... hes got to be getting
his moneys worth! I mean, free, is free! Colin Huxted
was also there, and the whole booth had made small
wagers on the various chucks. When his own sponsored teams lost in a few heats, he had an explanation.
If youve bought a tarp for advertising, you dont
want to be the winner, he said. If my chuck goes too
fast, you cant read my name! Remember, we have a
lot of seniors in the crowd, the slower my team goes,
the better my advertising is!
When you think about it, it makes a lot of business sense! I mean, if the Huxted Chuckwagon wagon
crosses over the finish line turtle-like, his name will be
seen that much longer! Okay, it may sound like weird
logic, but maybe theres a touch of genius to that idea!
My only brother from Vancouver was also visiting
this past week. My brother is married to a nice, retired
teacher, and shes a pretty patient person. Shed have
to be, because when she and Gary drive out here in
one shot, he hates to stop not even for bathroom
breaks! He does know where some roadside outhouses are, but theyre always on a pretty tight schedule.
One of the last times Gary was out, we were at the
Chestermere pub. If youre a long time reader (I know
why would you be?!), then you remember this story. That last visit of his found us at the Chestermere
pub, and he met us there, carrying what I thought
was a purse. Now this is Southern Alberta, and briefly,
I feared for our lives! Truth be told, I dont care what
men carry, but it really did look like a purse, and I
may have jokingly said that. With a death-like stare,
Gary grimly stated, its not a purse, Pat. Its a satchel,
a carry-all lots of Vancouver men have them.
Okay, Gary, call it what you want whatever helps
you sleep at night. But, Ill make you a bet. If you have
all five things in your satchel that I name, its a purse!
With another glare (man, he does that a lot!), Gary
agreed.
Okay, here we go, I stated. Nail clippers, chap
stick, a file, band-aids, and a brush.
Gary grew pale, and slowly pulled out each of the
items!

Alright, now we can all agree that its not a satchel,

or an Indiana Jones bag, or one that Jack Bauer might
carry its a purse! I cried.
Alright, alright, call it what you want, Gary stated
glumly, as he began to put back the items.
Wait, wait, wait! I cried. Could I borrow the file
from your purse, I think I have a hangnail!
Ah, theres nothing like tormenting an older brother
you dont see often!
So back to this latest visit of my brother. Those
of you who know me, know I wear shorts as long as I
can, even into the winter. I also dont have any hair on
my legs, and they may not be the most muscular. Oh,
Ive heard them all: do I wax, or shave them? They
look like a big guy riding a chicken, and of course,
why dont I wear a skirt? People can be so cruel! I
noticed Garys legs were the same as mine!
Hey, you have no hair on your legs, either! You really are my brother! I cried.
With no hesitation, Gary replied, I shave them.
For a moment I was a bit stunned, and then I asked
why.
Well, you know that bicycle racers in Europe shave
their legs, dont you? I replied yes, even though I had
no clue about this.
Well, they shave their legs to cut down resistance,
and in case they crash, theres less chance of infection
on a road burn, he stated in a matter-of-fact way.
Uh, Gary youre 57, and you dont race bikes!
Why do you need to shave your legs? I asked.
Once again, I got his death-like glare! I was at a
loss, as to the intentional plucking of his legs!
He calmly replied that he does ride his bicycle a lot
around Vancouver, and that he takes spin classes. Spin
classes on a stationary bike.
Uh Gary, three questions do you tip over a lot in
spin classes? Nothing. Do you wear a helmet, too?
Nothing.
He did not seem to like this, and again came the
death-glare. Last question: when you ride your bike
in spin class, do you have a basket on the handlebars
to hold your purse?!
I ran out laughing, feeling his cold, icy stare on my
back!

Banking should be something you do, not somewhere
you need to go, said Scott

Haden, the president of Chinook Financial. So if you

are on the tractor, or at the
rink with your kids and you
have a cheque that you want
to deposit in your account,
then you should be able to
do it offsite without having
to run to the site.
One of the reasons for this

Haden said that it is all

Cemetery restoration
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The village of Rockyford is
investing thousands of dollars
to restore one of their historic
landmarks, just as their centennial celebration is quickly
approaching in 2019. The
Rockyford Union Cemetery is
the first of many sites receiving a facelift over the next
four years, and is estimated to
cost anywhere from $50,000
to $80,000.
With the villages 100th
birthday celebration only a
few years away, citizens have
turned their attention to preserve such crucial milestones.
I think when we see these
milestones in our municipality, we have to remember how
we got to be 100 years old,
said Rockyford Mayor Darcy
Burke.
Theres a lot of history in
that cemetery, it goes back
to before Rockyford was incorporated as a municipality. The gravesites and head
stones, a lot of them are deteriorated. Theyre apart of the
rehabilitation process and felt
as though as a part of our history.
Burke added that this
would be the first restoration that has been done to
the cemetery dating back to
when Rockyford was first established.
He said that this would be a
great way to recognize those
who settled the areas; they
played a key role in establishing the community.
And that was by our early
settlers and those folks that
decided to set our municipality in motion, he said. I think
thats all a part of preserving
our heritage and our history.
What caught Burkes atten-

tion about the project was the

survey that was conducted in
the cemetery and the findings
that were discovered in the
process.
He said that the findings
revealed unmarked graves
and that the process will be
to find those graves and identify them through historical
records.
Mary Marshman spearheaded the project in memory of
her late husband Dwayne,
whose dream was to restore
the cemetery and make a
piece of history look presentable in honour of the ones
that established this community.
Weve worked on that
cemeteries for years together, said Marshman.
Thats always my husbands dream to restore that
cemetery to its original state
as much as we could.
A group of enthusiastic individuals will be helping with
the restoration while there
will be a cemetery maintenance company coming in
with supplies to insert pieces
of the project.
The domes are of cement, said Marshman. Over
time they disintegrate and
they dont do that anymore
for gravesites. Some of them
well be able to do, the people that are doing it, thats
their specialty. They also do
other cemeteries. Theyve
brought in a couple of grave
tops, domes from other cemetery, that no longer want to
do that.
As a part of the restoration,
there will be a plaque put up
in memory of the people that
are buried in cemetery.
If people are interested in
donating, they can go to the
Village of Rockyfords office.

Strathmores Field Stone Fruit Wines were recognized for some quality wines they had produced in
three separate prestigious competitions recently.
At the All Canadian Wine Championships in Prince
Edward County, Ont. there was a record 1,356 entries
from 237 wineries and Field Stones Strawberry Dessert Wine won in the Soft Fruit Dessert Wine category.
In the North West Wine Summit, Field Stone racked
up the awards including a bronze medal for the
Cherry Fruit Wine, silver medals for the Black Current Fruit Wine, Bumbleberry Fruit Wine, Strawberry
Dessert Wine and Wild Black Cherry Dessert Wine.
Then they took home gold for the Raspberry Fruit
Wine, Raspberry Dessert Wine and the Black Currant
Dessert Wine.
Additionally, they received The Superlative Award
for the best of region for its Raspberry Fruit Wine, a
Winery of Distinction Award as one of the only 14
wineries to win at least three gold medals, and a cov-

eted Crystal Rose Award for the best fortified wine in

the competition for its Raspberry Dessert Wine; and
for the first time a Best Value Award for the Raspberry Fruit Wines.
Lastly, on a provincial scale, Fruit Stone received the
Best in Class distinction for its Strawberry-Rhubarb
Fruit Wine.
Despite a limited fruit year due to hail, Fruit Stone
partner Elaine Gill was pleased to have the winery
recognized in short list for the distinction award.
Only 14 wineries get this distinction here out of
(all the) wineries, said Gill. Its very gratifying and
encouraging when some of these wine competitions
give us gold medals and awards like this.
Gill added that for wines to be noticed, they have to
be balanced for the judges.
You have to have a good flavour without being
overpowering, said Gill.
The wines tastes vary from year-to-year and Gill
said that is because of the fruit changing every year
and that you have to be adaptable at competitions
such as these.

Field Stone Fruit Wine once again earned

themselves numerous awards this year, taking home bronze, silver, and gold medals at
various competitions. Marvin and Elaine Gill
show off some of their winnings.

Suspension of disbelief brings

Twelfth Night into 2015
LAUREEN GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Artistic director Brad Graham and the
Suspension of Disbelief theatre company-based in Rosebud, opened their third
Shakespeare season Aug. 23, performing the comedy
Twelfth Night in
the Passion Play
sites Forum amphitheatre.
The story of
Twelfth Night is
all about mistaken
identity, Graham
explained in an
e-mail. A young
woman named Viola is shipwrecked
and, landing in a
strange
country,
she dresses as a
boy so she can get
a job as a messenger. But that confuses Countess Olivia, who receives
love
messages
from Viola on behalf of Duke Orsino
with whom Viola has fallen in love.
In the meantime, Olivias officious
head butler Malvolio has put the rest of
the households nose out of joint, so they
hatch a plan that involves more fake love
letters, Graham said. Add in a spiteful
maid, a drunken uncle, a dandy suitor,
and a Fool to keep things interesting!
Suspension of Disbeliefs cast, who
are also the crew, include performers familiar to those whove been to Rosebud
Theatre or enjoyed Suspension of Disbeliefs past shows: Glenda Warkentin as
Olivia, Kelsey Krogman as Feste the fool,
Andrew Cooper as foolish suitor Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and Caleb Gordon as
Malvolio. New to the cast this year are
Kendra Hutchinson, Byron Linsey and
Sarah Spicer.
Our biggest goal is always to make
the characters were working with and
portraying, (into) people our audience
can recognize, Graham said. The way
they speak is poetic, but it doesnt need
to get in the way of us understanding
them and the good story they have to
tell.
Graham is pleased about the way Suspension of Disbelief has grown in just
three seasons.
Weve managed to discover some
pretty great things about Shakespeare
and how his plays work, he said. I feel
like weve gained a pretty loyal following. Those whove taken the risk with us
and come out to see our work have been

pleasantly pleased with what theyve discovered.

Hed like to keep growing the company, perhaps expanding to two performances each summer, adding a tragedy
and running a longer season. For now,
he said, Im just grateful for the sharing thats taken
place between
a
450-year-old
writer, a group of
vital theatre artists, and an audience made up of
community that
were grateful to
be a part of!
Suspension
of Disbelief will
perform eleven
matinee and evening shows between Aug. 23 to
Sept. 6, all in the
forum space on
the Passion Play
site in Drumheller. Graham said
theyd appreciate
it if we let them know were coming, but
all performances are pay-what-you-will.

with all the adversity, said Bechtold.

Its life. Sometimes things just dont
work out. I spent time in every league
in Western Canada, I met some really
good people, met a lot of players and
a lot of coaches. I think its something
I want to do in my future is coach and
Ive learned a lot of different systems
and how theyre all orchestrated.
Bechtold highlighted a lot of memories of his road-trip across the nations
western provinces and he reflected on
some notable highlights in two stops.
He said that as a 19-year-old, he
had a great experience when he was
traded to Drumheller in November
and finished the season there where
the Dragons ended up making it to
the South Final but lost. Then this past
season he played for the Weyburn Red
Wings where he took on a leadership
role.
For his leadership qualities, he received the Most Popular Player Award
and Most Inspirational.
His father thinks this will be a great
place for him to play and hopefully
show what his capabilities are on the
ice.
I think its a great place for him to
play and great place for him to learn,
said John.
I think its really important that he
steps up his game. I think he did well
in a lot of those junior areas. I think he
has an opportunity to really be one of
the main players on the team.
According to John, he thinks Alex
can chip in more offensively with the
Clippers than he did in junior.
Clippers Head Coach Jamie Ramer is
excited to be coaching a second-generation Bechtold and said that he will
have to see where he fits until after
camp.
I guess what Id say I see in him,
one of his biggest assets, beyond his
skill and experience is just his passion
for the game, his passion to win and
compete, said Ramer. Obviously with
his size, he can be pretty potent up
front. I guess well see how our training camp goes to see where were going to have him this year. I think with
his shot and his work in the corners,
he can fit into a few different lines.
Bechtold plans to enroll in education
in hopes of being a teacher some day.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Thunder U21 girls fast
pitch team battled hard and finished fourth
with a 4-2 record at the Junior Western
Womens Championships in Surrey, B.C.
from Aug. 6-9.
Head coach Lanky Johnson said the
tournament was the best play all year
was this four-day championship final.
The club opened the tournament with
a convincing 6-1 win over Cloverdale before dropping a tight contest to Saskatchewan UK Royals 3-2 to close out Day 1
of championship. They opened up Day 2
with another 3-2 loss to the North Shore
Avalanche, before getting back on track
with a 7-0 win over Earl Grey of Saskatchewan.
After our third game with a 1-2 record,

during the team talk I reminded them

playing that little bit harder, is needed,
said Johnson.
Where you walk out at the end of the
game with a bruise or a scrape that win
or lose you left nothing behind. From that
point on they did dig even deeper and it
was a treat to watch them perform.
Saturday was the best day as the team
never looked back. They were able to beat
the Vancouver Bomb Squad 6-2 and edge
the Fury from B.C. 2-0. The Thunder went
into the playoff round as the third seed
and was matched up with the Bomb Squad
again in the playoff round, but fell 10-7.
Being the youngest team (18.43 years
old is our average age) and all others were
20-21 years of age, they realized that determination and team work is key and
they received a lot of compliments from
people there as well, said Johnson.

Players enjoying
Elite development
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The annual Elite Hockey Development camps are in full swing at the
Strathmore Family Centre and players
from the peewee level all the way up to
junior can be seen skating to prepare for
the upcoming season.
We mixed most of the ages and its
really effective, said head instructor
Doug Raycroft. You get a kid like Kyle
(Crnkovic), hoping to make bantam triple A, and hes skating with guys that
went to nationals and junior hockey
players. He gets to ask them questions
and its really good for those guys and
its good for the older kids too to work
with those guys.
The camp focuses on preparing the
players for the season by working on
skill development and fitness.
For the instructors, its working on
getting the players out of their comfort zones and working them that much
harder so that they are better in many
aspects of their games.
We constantly tell them that we want
them to fail on the ice, said Raycroft.
In the summer we want them to be
pushing themselves so that they make
mistakes all the time. Thats how we
know theyre going to get better, if they
go slow enough to be successful all the
time then theyre not going to be playing at the level they need to.
Crnkovic felt that playing with older
players has been invaluable for furthering his development as he moves up
bantam this season.
Its pretty great so far training with
older guys, said Crnkovic. I think itll
get me ready for camp, theyre in good
shape and Im just trying to keep up
with them.
Crnkovic is striving to play with the
Rocky Mountain Raiders bantam triple-A
team out of Okotoks this year.
Local player Ray Warrack had a sole
focus of working on his stride in the
camp and felt it has improved in each
session.
Ive been hoping to work on my
stride and make it a bit more of a smooth
stride and working on my game to play
it at a faster pace, said Warrack, who is
eyeing a spot on the Wheatland Braves
peewee double-A team.
Elite Hockey Development has spots
available in the scoring clinic at the end
of August and players can go to www.

Kings introduce new coaches

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Shortly after Wheatland Kings coach
Jeremy Blumes was dismissed, a familiar name stepped up to the plate
while two new faces will round out
the staff for the 2015-2016 season.
Last years assistant Joel Robinson
and former elite athlete coach Emilio
Fouco will co-coach while Brett Hartos, a former junior B captain, will be
behind the bench for the first time as
an assistant.
Robinson is thrilled for the promotion to a co-coaching role, a challenge
that he has been waiting for and looking forward to taking on this season.
He feels that this is a step in the
right direction in moving up in the
coaching ranks.
I wanted to take on a head coaching role, said Robinson. Im a younger coach, so me getting into a head
coaching is something that Ive been
trying to do for a few years. I want to
get as high as I can in the coaching
world and this is just another stepping stone for me.
In the long run this is a team game
and I want to see our team succeed
and I think thats one of the biggest
reasons why Im coming on board as
a head coach.
Robinson wants to change the mentality of the team, and that will in-

GOLF TOURNAMENT
TEXAS SCRAMBLE

Strathmore Golf Course

clude more character in the room and more consistent

efforts into winning more hockey games.
It was a good first year last year, but I want to have a
team that were hard to play against, thats going to be
competitive and not going to win a game here, lose a
game here, said Robinson. I think thats something the
Town of Strathmore wanted, they wanted something thats
going to be more competitive this year.
He added the Kings received great support from the local fans in the playoffs last year, but would like to see
more of a consistent fan base throughout the season.
Coaches want to win championships and Robinson is no
different, but he knows there is a lot of work to do before
a long postseason is in the cards.
This has always been a learning curve for me and a
learning curve for any coach, said Robinson. You always
have different challenges here that are going to present
itself. I think a big part of that is having a good coaching
staff with yourself and having a good line of communication.
For Fuoco, it will be a chance to get back into coaching
elite athletes and developing them into successful players,
but he said at the same time he is trying to familiarize
himself with the systems.
Im extremely excited to get back to coaching young
men that have aspirations to play some competitive, elite
hockey, said Fouco. Im just getting acquainted with everything right now. Its all relatively new and fast, but the
feet will hit the ground and away we go.
Fouco has extensive coaching credentials having coached
his two kids in minor hockey, while he spent a lot of years
in the Calgary Spring Hockey League where he coached
successful teams.
He is hoping to play a key role in advancing young men
to the next level of their career by improving their skill set
so that they have the opportunity to make that next step.
Another addition to the staff this year, Hartos will be
debuting in his first season as a coach and has familiarity
with Robinson, and wants to develop as the team does
and help the Kings build on a great season from a year
ago.
The two-time city Junior B league champion and former
three-time league champion with the Calgary Blues, a few
years back, was known to be a great teammate in the room
and in the public and is wanting to bring that strength to
the club.
Wheatland Kings Manager Dale Peters thinks the cocoach format will be beneficial for both Robinson and
Fuoco because of their similar coaching styles.
We felt that was the best bet for Joel and Emilio, said
Peters. We think it creates a situation where you have
youth and you have maturity and I think thats what we
need in the dressing room.
One of the reasons I suggested co-coaching was that
both of them are very much alike and they think very
much alike.
The coaches will have a quick turnaround as they will
have to get prepared for conditioning camp Aug. 17-20 at
the Strathmore Family Centre.

Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
