Is the youth synonym of rebelliousness? Or did

the youth become a simple advertising trend?
In June of 2014, will be completed one year
since the great public manifestations began
to occur all around Brazil. The protesters,
comprising mostly of young people - if we
define them only by age - have achieved space
within the great national and international
media. Since then the protest continued, with
lesser intensity, but always with the same
purpose: change. In the same manner that the
Youth and Rebelliousness festival was not
elaborated from the public manifestations of
June 2013, it does not try to simply reflect
upon the protests.
Therefore, we ask: is rebelliousness intrinsic
to young people? At the same time that juvenile
alienation is being discussed, around the world
there are movements popping out which scream:
we are not satisfied. Such as all unsatisfaction,
it is originated from the environment, the
society in which such movements are inserted.
And also presents itself with a proposal
of change, a path pointed out. Within this
context, the cinema, an art that has always
been supported by the young, becomes crucial
to understand the past and the present and to
speculate upon the future.
The Youth and Rebelliousness festival brings to
Rio de Janeiros Caixa Cultural 14 contemporary
movies, produced in the last 20 years, from
different directors and nationalities that
concern the representation of the young in
its political and social context. During two
weeks, the public from the fluminense capital
will have the opportunity to see memorable

Juventude sinnimo de rebeldia?
Ou juventude se tornou apenas um
apelo publicitrio? Em junho de 2014,
far um ano que comearam as grandes
manifestaes por todo o Brasil. Os
manifestantes, formados em sua maioria
por jovens - se os definirmos apenas pela
idade -, ganharam espao nas grandes
mdias nacionais e internacionais. De
l pra c os protestos continuaram, com
menos intensidade, mas sempre com o mesmo
objetivo: a mudana. Mas assim como a
mostra Juventude e Rebeldia no foi
elaborada a partir das manifestaes de
junho de 2013, ela no pretende apenas
refletir sobre os protestos.
Por isso, ns perguntamos: a rebeldia
intrnseca aos jovens? Ao mesmo tempo
em que discute-se a alienao juvenil,
ao redor do mundo estouram movimentos
que gritam: no estamos satisfeitos.
Como toda insatisfao, ela fruto do
meio, da sociedade em que tais movimentos
esto inseridos. E tambm apresenta-se
como uma proposta de mudana, um caminho
apontado. Dentro desse contexto, o
cinema, uma arte que sempre se apoiou nos
jovens, torna-se crucial para entender
o passado e o presente e para especular
sobre o futuro.
A mostra Juventude e Rebeldia traz
Caixa Cultural do Rio de Janeiro
14 filmes contemporneos, produzidos
nos ltimos 20 anos, de diferentes
diretores e nacionalidades que tratam da
representao do jovem em seu contexto
poltico e social. Durante duas semanas,

and Mathieu Kassovitz (Hate), as well as other
filmmakers which are not in the mainstream, such
as Stuart Townsend (Battle In Seattle), Shane

(Something in the Air), discuss relevant and
omnipresent themes of nowadays: drugs, political
terrorism, sex, education, music, violence,
protests. Some of these movies were not even
commercially released in Brazil or they are
already out of catalogue; this way, the Youth
and Rebelliousness festival gives this unique
opportunity to many carioca spectators, so they
may watch these great works.
The curatorship was assembled from a wider
specter of the meaning of being young and
rebellious, with the selected movies picturing
young people searching for answers against
the oppression imposed upon them. Right or
wrong, conscious or naive: it does not matter.
They only give back to society what they have
received from it. Or as in the ending sentence
of Hate: It is the story of a society which
falls and repeats, during the fall, as to
comfort itself: So far, so good. So far, so
good. So far, so good. The important is not
the fall, its the landing.

Its hard to precise what is youth. Who dont
consider themselves young nowadays? The
concept of youth is quite flexible: from 18 to
40, all adults are young. Youth is a state of
mind, its a body way, its a sign of health
and will, its a consumer profile, a market
piece in which everyone wants to include
themselves. It seems humiliating not being
young and start in that life period in which
the most complacent ones look at us with mercy
and sympathy and, to not use the offensive
word - old age -, prefer the euphemism third
age. We passed from a long, very long youth,
straight to the old age, leaving empty the
place that should be occupied by the adult.
The filmmaker Jean-Luc-Godard, always tuned
on the symptoms of the contemporary suffering
and alienation, make the characters of his
movie, Praise of Love (2001), constantly repeat
the question: quest que cest un adult?
Evidently, Godard leaves the question without
an answer.
The youth prestige is recent: The Brazil
of 1920 was a landscape of old people,
wrote Nelson Rodrigues in an article about
his childhood in Alegre street. The young
boys didnt have function, nor destiny. The
time didnt bear the youth. The writer was
referring to the signs of respectability and
seriousness that every young boy had hurry
to bear, in the first half of 20th century. A
man of 25 years old already had the mustache,

Difcil precisar o que juventude.
Quem no se considera jovem hoje em dia? O
utilizar a palavra ofensiva - velhice -,
preferem o eufemismo terceira idade.
Passamos de uma longa, longussima
juventude, direto para a velhice,
deixando vazio o lugar que deveria ser
ocupado pelo adulto. O cineasta Jean-Luc
Godard, sempre antenado nos sintomas do
sofrimento e da alienao contemporneos,
faz os personagens de seu filme, Elogio ao
amor (2001), repetirem insistentemente
a pergunta: quest que cest un adult?
Evidentemente Godard deixa a questo sem

were more valued when they started the
productive/reproductive phase of life than
when they still inhabited the limbo between
childhood and adult life called youth or, as
became a habit after the 1950 decade, the
adolescence.
Nevertheless, the future writer of the year
2030, when writing his life memories in the
beginning of the third millennium, may claim:
The Brazil of 2004 was a landscape of young
people. Over more than 40 years, we are all
young. Every time that the expression in
my time... is used, it refers to the golden
years of life, the youth. Therefore, it was
one or two decades before of my time, that
the teenagers and the young began to come out
of a certain culpable and obedient obscurity
to which medical and moral discourses had
relegated them, to become a population strip
privileged by cultural industry.
The puberty as a sexual maturing phase
of children, that marks the transition of
the child body to the adult functions of
procreation, has a place in all cultures. From
the Classic Greece to Brazilian indigenous
societies, the pubescent is yet recognized
as so, and the passage from childhood to
the adult life is accompanied by rituals
which main function is to symbolic reinstate
the body of this that is no longer a child,
in a way that it start to occupy a place
among the adults. However, the concept of
adolescence, that goes in certain countries
until the end of the youth (nowadays,

his 20s a teenager), has an origin and a

story that matches with the modernity and

the industrialization. The adolescence in
modernity has a moratorium sense, extended
period of waiting lived by those who are no
longer kids, but still didnt embody the
adult life. The concept of adolescence is
tributary of the incompatibility between
sexual maturity and marriage unpreparedness.
On the other hand, also, the gap between the
full acquisition of adult physical capacities
- strength, dexterity, ability, coordination,
etc. - and the lack of intellectual and
emotional maturity, needed to start in the
labor market. The progressive raise of school
formation period, the high competitiveness of
labor market in capitalist countries and, more
recently, the lack of jobs force the young
adult to live more and more in the condition of
teenager, depending on the family, away from
public life decisions and responsibilities,
incapable of deciding his own destiny.
In these circumstances, the adolescence could
only become a critical age. But as in the
capitalist economy, do boi se aproveita at o

sexual dissatisfaction under high hormonal

and lack of public spaces functions, ended

was the intelligence when we dabbled to

think beyond the university canons. Young was
the rebelliousness against the established
patterns, against the hypocritical moral that
sacrificed the body pleasures in the name
of an empty dignity. Young was the adhesion
to politic utopias that proposed a better
future. It doesnt stop being symptomatic that
today people of 40, 50 still get passionately
interested in politics, while the teenagers
seem overcome in doing the citizenship fight
a mere statement of the consumers rights.
Also is unnecessary to repeat that much more
powerful forces than the wishes of one or two
generations of children soon came into play.
That the capital forces - the same ones that
contributed to evoke sleeping juvenile spirits
and provoke the wave of young demands from the
1960 decades -, with their unbeatable sense of
opportunity, they knew how to reorganize the
chaos around the so called market logic. Being
young became a slogan, became a publicity
clich, and became a categorical imperative
- condition to belong to a certain updated
and victorious elite. At the same time, the
youth reveals itself as a really powerful
army of consumers, free from the moral and
religious breaks that regulated the body and
pleasure relation, and disconnected from any
traditional speech that could supply criteria
concerning the value and consistency, lets
say, existential, of a torrent of goods made,
from night to day, essential to our happiness.

evocar espritos juvenis adormecidos e
provocar a onda de demandas jovens da

o caos em torno da chamada lgica do

The culture of the young that starts to talk

in the 60s began way before and already could
glean all its features from the beginning
of the 50s. It was the profile of a teenager
different from previous generations, due to
his... number, wealth, self-consciousness. It
was about the first generation of privileged
North-American teenagers... The figure of
the teenager that in a way emerged was
associated, above all, with the urban life
and found its habitat in the high school that seemed changed into a cosmos of itself
- with the clubs, the sport activities and
other activities and accessory places like
the drugstore, the automobile, the pub
for the young. (...) A generation seen as
problematic, but, also, as a reflector mirror
of the post-war American society: a lot of
the insistence about the young as consumers
- new and gigantic market that opened itself
to the Coca-Cola selling, bubblegum, candies,
records, clothes, cosmetics, car accessories
and retail cars - could be transmitted, in
spite of the shades of scandal, to the secret
pleasure of seeing confirmed the consumer
philosophy that represented a bible of the
American wellbeing.
This teenager transformation in privileged
share of the consumer market inaugurated in
the United States, and rapidly disseminated in
the capitalistic world, brought some benefits
and new contradictions. In one side, the
association between youth and consumption
favored the flourishing of a teenager culture
highly hedonistic. The teenager of the last
decades of the 20th century is no longer the
big, clumsy and inhibited, with bad skin and
antisocial habits child, to become the model
of beauty, freedom and sensuality to all the
other age ranges. The post-modern teenager

Isleide Fontenelle, em seu minucioso

enjoy all of adult life freedoms, but is spared

of almost all of the responsibilities.
It seems that, on writing this, Im restricting
the focus of this analysis to elite teenagers,
the only ones who, in fact, can consume and
enjoy the young adult condition that desires
and whims are sustained by the parents.
Its not like that. In the society guided by
the cultural industry, the identifications
constitute themselves through industrialized
images. Few are those who are capable of
consuming all the products that are offered to
the contemporary teenager - but the image of
the consuming teenager, disseminated by the
publicity and by the television, offers itself
to the identification of all social standing.
That way, the culture of teenager sensuality,
of seeking pleasures and new sensations, of
the body fruition, of freedom, includes all the
teenagers. From mamas boy to the homeless
person, from the young underemployed that lives
in the slum to the college student of Morumbi
(or Leblon), from the dealer to the spoiled rich
girl, all the teenagers identify themselves
with the advertisement ideal of the hedonistic,
pretty, free, sensual teenager. Which helps,
evidently, an exponential raise of violence
among those who feel included by the image path,
but excluded from consuming possibilities. I
come back to this point later on.
The paradoxical effect of the field of
imaginary identifications opened by the young
culture is that it calls people of all ages.
The more time we can consider ourselves
young nowadays, the better. Better to the
disposable gadgets industry, better for the
publicity - better for us? The fact is that
in the last decades, we became perennial
young people. Why not? If in Nelson Rodrigues

para se transformar no modelo de beleza,
liberdade e sensualidade para todas as
outras faixas etrias. O adolescente psmoderno desfruta de todas as liberdades
da vida adulta, mas poupado de quase
todas as responsabilidades.
Parece que, ao escrever isso, estou
limitando o foco dessa anlise aos
adolescentes da elite, os nicos que,

criteria, the longevity patterns, the limit to
what we can demand or enjoy of our bodies? If
is still unknown of what the human machine,
made of appetites and language, is capable,
why the power of culture, of money, of
cinema and of television cannot freeze five,
six generations in a perpetual youth? The
psychoanalysis point of view.
Freud wrote about the adolescence way before
this emancipation, when it was only able
to watch the pathogenic effects of sexual
moratorium. The transformations of puberty is
the last and the leanest of his three essays
for a sexual theory (1905). As the focus of his
analysis is the sexuality, Freud gives priority
in the teenager the development of a new
sexual ending - the genitality, in contrast
with the polymorphism that characterizes
the childish sexuality - concomitant to the
maturity of genital organs, which becomes able
to exert its procreative function. The growth
of external genitals manifest, allied to the
internal genitals development, culminates in
the constitution of a complicated apparatus
that awaits its use. The consequences of this
waiting, much prolonged at the time, were
examined by him in posterior texts, in which
he addressed the pathogenic effects of the
virginity taboo or the relation between sexual
moral and neurosis.

22

The most relevant aspects of the three essays,

in what concerns the adolescence, its the
Oedipus complex intensification produced due to
the maturation of genital sexuality. For Freud,
the leftovers not resolved in the childish
Oedipus complex, that stayed like resting

pela publicidade e pela televiso,

oferece-se identificao de todas
as classes sociais. Assim, a cultura
da sensualidade adolescente, da busca
de prazeres e novas sensaes, do
desfrute do corpo, da liberdade, inclui
todos os adolescentes. Do filhinho de
papai ao morador de rua, do jovem
subempregado que vive na favela ao
estudante universitrio do Morumbi (ou
do Leblon), do traficante patricinha,
todos os adolescentes se identificam com
o ideal publicitrio do adolescente
hedonista, belo, livre, sensual. O que
favorece, evidentemente, um aumento
exponencial da violncia entre os que se
sentem includos pela via da imagem, mas
excludos das possibilidades de consumo.
Volto a esse ponto mais adiante.
O efeito paradoxal do campo de
identificaes imaginrias aberto pela
cultura jovem que ele convoca pessoas
de todas as idades. Quanto mais tempo
pudermos nos considerar jovens hoje em
dia, melhor. Melhor para a indstria
de quinquilharias descartveis, melhor
para a publicidade - melhor para ns? O
fato , que nas ltimas dcadas, viramos
jovens perenes. Por que no? Se no tempo
de Nelson Rodrigues todos queriam ser
velhos; se cada poca elege um perodo
da vida para simbolizar seus ideais de

during its latency period - approximately

between the 7 and the 12, 13 years old - come
again to produce disturbing effects on the
psychism from puberty on. The adolescence
crisis is comprehended, in psychoanalysis,
as a return to the Oedipus crisis in huge
proportions; in the teenager, the incestuous
desires become more frightening, due to
hormonal/genital maturity, and the oedipal
rivalry with the parent of the same sex
enhances, allied with motions of freedom
proper to the ambiguity (not a child anymore/
yet not adult) of this period.
A contemporary scholar of adolescence, JeanJacques Rassial, writes that the teenager
sees himself, in no time, exceeded by his
body, without a solid base to constitute
an attitude, a posture, and a personality
that will follow his physical growth. For
that, he tries to avail himself of fetishobjects: the girls bra, the boys razor,
etc., which holds, as appendices of the body,
the growth that he demands. The analysis of
Rassial helps us to comprehend the privileged
place of the teenager as a consumer, in every
social standing. Expensive or cheap, sold in
malls or in street sellers, the accessories
compose the adolescent mask, functioning as
transitional objects that help in the difficult
task of enrolling this new body, strange even
to the subject itself, in this place also in
transition between the childish and adult
life that he starts to dwell. In our secular
societies, in which it lacks rites of passage
to sign the entering in the adult life, the
consumer goods and the spaces available to
teenagers to attend - the snack bar, the funk
party, the disco, the mega street concerts substitutes the typical rites of pre-modern
cultures. The young also create their own

s era possvel observar os efeitos
patognicos da moratria sexual. A

e o mais enxuto de seus trs ensaios

Freud privilegia no adolescente o

com o polimorfismo que caracteriza a

a intensificao do complexo de dipo

like marijuana or beer, works as a proof or
challenge to decide the entry of new ones in
certain groups, establishing the connection
not only among the conservatives and the
knowledgeable, but also among those that are
seen yet as children and those who already
consider themselves stepping towards adult
life.
While the societies founded in the oral
transmission preserved, in their initiation
rites, the potential space of this no-place
of adolescence, bringing to light what in
there enters in the game of death and of

Rassial relates (with Freud, in another text)
the protection offered by the group with the
delinquency acts quite frequent among young
people from all social standing. Nevertheless,
he also observes that the delinquency is as
much pathological of one or another particular
subject as from society in its set. We can,
for example, understand the raise in juvenile
delinquency in our days among the effects
of what Ive been calling teenagezation
of occidental culture. The first that occurs
to me is the following: every adult feels a
certain bad consciousness in front of their
life experience. If the rule is to live with
the availability, the hope and the yearnings
of who is 13, 15 or 17 years old, what to
do of selectivity, distrust and even the

escreve que o adolescente se v, de

se valer de objetos-fetiche: o suti na

sustentem, como apndices do corpo, o
crescimento que ele reivindica. A anlise

defined profile, inevitable for those who lived
40 or 50 years? The adult that mirrors in
teen ideals feels uncomfortable facing the
responsibility of drawing his conclusions
about life and pass it to his descendants.
This means that the vacancy of adult, in
our culture, is unoccupied. Nobody wants to
be on the other side, the conservative side,
of the conflict of generations, in a way that
the called conflict, for better or for worst,
cleared away itself. Mothers and fathers dance
rock, funk and reggae with their kids, make
complicit commentaries about sex and drugs,
frequently position themselves on the side of
the transgression in the conflicts with the
school and with the institutions.
This freedom charges its price in helplessness:
the teenagers seems to live in a world in
which the rules are made by them and for them,
as if the parents and educators themselves
are committed with a lightness and a young
nonchalance. T nem a2, says the chorus

a healthy attitude if, instead of tolerance
and comprehension, they didnt reveal a great
omission in favoring minimum parameters to
orient their children growth. Its not like the
parents from before knew how their children
should face life, but they thought they knew;
and this was enough to trace a horizon,
constitute a reference code - even it was

observa tambm que a delinquncia

seu conjunto. Podemos, por exemplo,
entender o aumento da delinquncia
juvenil nos nossos dias entre os efeitos
do que venho chamando de teenagizao
da cultura ocidental. O primeiro que me
ocorre o seguinte: todo adulto sente
uma certa m conscincia diante de sua
experincia de vida. Se a regra viver

what the Other knows falls apart, and the

experience itself loses meaning. In addition,
as no place of discourse production stays
empty very long without any adventurer to step
ahead, watch out! The authoritarian State, pure
and simple, can sometimes produce adults that
intend themselves teen. In this case, instead
of the elaboration of the experience, we would
have State reasons (or worse, World Bank
reasons) dictating what to do with our lives.
The devaluation of experience empts the
meaning of life. I dont talk about experience
as an argument of authority - I know because
I lived. Especially in a plastic and fast
culture like the contemporary one, few things
we can teach to others from our experience. At
most, that the alterity exists. However, the
experience, as well as the memory, produces
subject consistency. I am what I lived.
Discarded the past, in the name of an eternal
youth, it produces a void that is hard to
stand.
It seems contradictory assume that a teen
culture can be depressive, mainly when you
bet in the empire of sensations - adrenaline,
orgasm, cocaine - stir up the gang. But its
what I have been noticing, at least among
young people from middle class, that I receive
in my practice office. Depression and, what
is more concerning, phobic crisis - which
the contemporary psychiatry named as panic
to change anguish in a symptom that can be
treated with medicines.
Panic: to enter in the adult world with the
help of the adults, who all want to belong
to the young world. Without identifiable
standards. Panic: enter in adolescence and has

Some parents dont care - I dont know if they
should. More and more, the teenagers adopt the
clothes, the slang (not slang, dialect!), the
music, and the slum aesthetics. A friend tells
me that her sons friends took the characters
of the movie City of God as idols. What is
astonishing is that the boys dont have enough
age to watch the movie; they identify with
the representation of the representation: the
charisma of the characters is passed through
advertising clips on TV or in chats with
older friends. Another colleague, resident of
Pacaembu, says that his 15-year-old son got
over an insecurity and anxiety crisis when he
started to attend the most dangerous sector
of the court of Gavies da Fiel6, trying to
mix themselves with periphery soccer fans. My
daughter colleague started a friendship with
the boys from his neighborhood slum and goes
out every night to spray paint on wall and
smoke with them.
It can be a protection strategy. To a teenager
at the age to begin going out alone through
the streets - fortunately, not all comply
with the claustrophobic small life of a mall,
driver and DVD -, its safer to be mistaken
with a bro than with a playboy. Some
pose as outlaws: Its better to be friends
with the guys than to be the stupid one that
they are going to rob. One polarization that
our violent and competitive society created
its not between rich and poor, white and
black: its between smart and stupid. Of

encounters with an eventual out law. However,

its not only about protection. The teenagers
are not trying to deceive the outlaws: they
are identifying themselves, in fact, not
necessarily with the criminals, but with the
marginalized, the boys and girls from the
periphery and from the slums. They identify
with the hip-hop culture: rap, skate, graffiti,
hat and sweatshirt. Theres a political
aspect in this attitude, absolutely. The
refusal of the prevailing consuming patterns
grows among teenagers in their social class
and a quest for authenticity as well, of
values that make more sense in the unfair
world in which they live in. Its true that
is a naive refusal, but also goes through
consumption: its about buying other clothes,
other CDs, go to other nightclubs. But as all
aesthetics comprises ethics, the choice of the
periphery model makes some difference. Its as
if we would only be able to find alternatives
to the lack of meaning in life guided by
consumption identifying ourselves with those
who doesnt have resources to consume.
I also see an exogamy movement, from departure
of the protected family circle to the broad
world - and the world outside the family,
today, has been increasingly presented to the
child and to the young as a world of danger.
Only that is not possible to live indefinitely
protected from the world. Lets to it, then.
Lets be dangerous.
None of this is too serious. Is preferable,
to the moral formation of a teenager, that he
sees the world as a jungle to venture than as
a boutique showcase. What is concerning, in my
point of view, its not the identification from
the elite boys with the excluded aesthetics,
but the identification with the violence. The

Outro conhecido, morador do Pacaembu,
diz que o filho de 15 anos superou uma

tentando confundir-se com os torcedores

cause for concern is when the curiosity and

the audacity in breaking with the narrow
circuit of bourgeoisie life result in the
identification with the criminal aesthetics.
That is not exactly the criminals language this, we only know in fact when we are in a
victims position. The style of criminal life
that teenagers try to imitate is the language
elaborated and in an aesthetics way by the
cinema, by rap, by television.
The phenomena of included identifications
with criminals reveals an unexpected effect
of the new wave that try to give visibility
to the excluded. They are many. I quickly
evoke: Trespasser, Something in the Air,
Bus 174, City of God, Carandiru and
others, only from the year 2003 till now.
Its because we live in a culture in which
the show dictates the citizenship standards,
organize the social relations, establishes
values, format the identifications. The movies
that report the misery, the criminality and
the police violence are the prey of this
contradiction: on trying to show what society
prefer to ignore, are necessarily spectacling
the evil.
Will it be inevitable that all the attempts to
report the violence by the cinematographical
(or televisual) imaginary way end up to
produce the audience identification with the
evil itself that is intended to challenge?
Why the crime reality, turned into spectacle,
seems to create a positive aura around the
criminal image? What would be the charisma
of the character Z Pequeno, psychopath
dealer from City of God, that makes a group
of teenagers to elect him as a symbol of
strength, boldness and the radically that they
wish for themselves?

illegitimate, who makes use of it. Powerless
in front of the social chaos, teenagers flirt
with the phantasy of becoming so violent (or
powerful) as the outlaws that intimidate them.
On the other side, an identifying effect
is originally from the spectacle logic. The
spectacle of crime, independently from the
author or moviemaker intention, makes the
outlaw a symbol of power that the image gives
to it. Power of visibility. Power of being.
Its necessary to build a new ethics of image
to cope with this contradiction.

The culture

The parents of middle class families are
concerned with the lack of ethics in the
teenagers conduct. They fear the bad influences
of the maloqueiros7 from the neighborhood but they dont realize that the worst examples
of irresponsibility and lack of education
derive from the own national elite, accustomed
to live with a series of illegal practices,
from highest to lowest order. A part of the
Brazilian leading class consider that the law
is only to frame others. The law is to the
jerks. The smart and privileged ones know how
to put themselves above or aside it. Whoever

more profound and efficient.
If, for the boys, the scape from the panic
can be identification with the outlaw that
threatens him, to the girls, its the
pregnancy. A sign, in the body, that keep up
with the imperative of the enjoyment, at the
same time, shows a strong argument to stop the
enjoyment.
Girls and mothers
If the boys walk around disguised as outlaws
to keep up with the threatening world that
awaits them and the imperative of the
enjoyment that is hanging over them, the new
millennium girls are becoming mothers sooner
and sooner. Like the women from indigenous
tribes, or like our great grandmothers except that in another cultural context -,
they are impregnating at 13, 14 years old.
Almost instantly after they start - I dont
know if early or not, so that also depends on
culture - to have sexual experiences.

The teenagers mothers belong to a generation

that brought down some taboos, as concerning
the women virginity as abortion, as a solution
considered legitimate for the cases where the
pregnancy is not desired. Today, the abortion
seem to recover the curse stigma that the
Church and the conservatives cast on it. The
pregnant girls became more horrified than her
parents faced with the abortion perspective.

the pregnancy is confirmed. The maternity once

more has the prestige in the post-feminism
generation.
Only that, unlike our great grandmothers, or
the young indigenous mothers, just a few of
the girls-mother of today are in conditions as
an adult to raise their children. When they
have the luck to count with family support,
they continue living in their parents house,
taking care of their babies as grown up girls
that still play with dolls, while father and
mother provide her livelihood.

The pregnant teenagers are stuck in the

contradiction that reaches all teenagers
nowadays: the lack of compass between an adult
sexual life, which accompanies the conditions of
biological maturation, and the social place of
dependency in relation to the family that gives
a childish condition. The liberation of customs
beneficiated the teenager with a big sexual
freedom, in the same culture where boys and
girls of 17, 18 years old are considered a little
more than children. They live with the family
and, when they are lucky, study, depending
exclusively from the adults work. The growing
restrictions of the labor market follow pushing
the end of adolescence each time further; in
the middle and high classes, the perspective is
to continue the studies way beyond graduation,
prolonging, with that, the financial dependency.
But, despite the fact that all the practical
inconvenient that a childbearing implies, there
is a kind of previous maternity acceptance that
rises with an incontestable value above the
disruptions that it leads to. We hope that, this
accident, arises a new meaning to the girls
life. That represents a positive turnaround, an
occasion to her growth. We hope that maternity
give a right way in the life of the transgressor
teenager.

A convivncia com a criminalidade dos

corrompe os adolescentes, principalmente
quando estes perdem a confiana na Justia

boa parte das novas geraes, de maneira

Until few decades ago, the pregnancy in

adolescence was a catastrophe or shame to
the family. The virginity valued that the
girls in the age of marriage and the early
pregnancy indicated something rotten in the
family, incapable of transmitting to one of
the daughters the bourgeoisie moral code that
would guarantee her a decent marriage, in the
future. The possibility of one with marriage
would compromise the possibility of success
in possible professional projects. Even to the
child father, in case he presented himself
as the responsible, the incident would bring
the inconvenient of a marriage before the
time, ending early a phase that was not only
studying and professional formation, but also
the right to have irresponsible fun, which,
until now, was reserved to the teenagers of
the male sex.
What means this enhancement of pregnancy
and early maternity, in the same culture
that faces adolescence as the golden age of
life, to be enjoyed with more freedom than
the one from the adults and with the same
childish irresponsibility? How to understand
this optimistic evaluation, promising of
adolescence maternity in the same culture that
projects under this phase of life the dreams
of impunity, freedom, lack of limits and the
supreme right to individualism, making thee
adolescence the ideal of adults, old people and
children?

a uma gerao que derrubou alguns tabus,

tanto no que se refere virgindade das
mulheres quanto ao aborto, como soluo
considerada legtima para os casos de
gravidez indesejada. Hoje, o aborto
parece ter retomado o estigma da maldio
que a Igreja e os conservadores lanaram
sobre ele. As meninas grvidas ficam
mais horrorizadas que seus pais ante
a perspectiva de abortar. A afirmativa
quero ter o meu filho j aparece pronta,
sem contestao, to logo a gravidez
se confirma. A maternidade volta a ter
prestgio na gerao ps-feminismo.
S que, ao contrrio de nossas
bisavs, ou das jovens mes indgenas,
poucas das meninas-mes de hoje esto
em condies de criar seus filhos como
adultas. Quando tm a sorte de contar
com o apoio familiar, continuam vivendo
na casa dos pais, cuidando de seus
bebs como meninas crescidas que ainda
brincam de bonecas, enquanto pai e me
providenciam seu sustento.
As adolescentes grvidas so presas
da contradio que atinge todos os
adolescentes na atualidade: o descompasso
entre uma vida sexual adulta, que
acompanha as condies da maturao
biolgica, e o lugar social de dependncia
em relao famlia que lhe confere
uma condio infantil. A liberao dos
costumes beneficiou o adolescente com
uma grande liberdade sexual, na mesma
cultura em que meninos e meninas de 17,
18 anos so considerados como pouco mais
do que crianas. Vivem com a famlia e,
quando tm sorte, estudam, dependendo
exclusivamente do trabalho dos adultos.

adolescncia para cada vez mais longe;

nas classes mdia e alta, a perspectiva
de continuar os estudos bem alm da
graduao, prolongando, com isso, a
dependncia financeira. Mas, apesar de
todos os inconvenientes prticos que
uma gestao na adolescncia implica,
h uma espcie de aceitao prvia da
maternidade, que se ergue como valor
incontestvel
acima
dos
percalos
que acarreta. Espera-se que, desse
acidente, decorra um novo sentido
para a vida da menina. Que represente
uma reviravolta positiva, ocasio para
seu
amadurecimento.
Espera-se
que
a maternidade d um jeito na vida da
adolescente transgressora.
At poucas dcadas atrs, a gravidez
na adolescncia era uma catstrofe ou
uma vergonha na famlia. A virgindade
valorizava as moas em idade de casar
e a gravidez precoce indicava algo de
podre na famlia, incapaz de transmitir
a uma das filhas o cdigo da moral
burguesa que lhe garantiria um casamento
digno, no futuro. A possibilidade de
um com casamento comprometeria a
possibilidade de sucesso em eventuais
projetos profissionais. At mesmo para
o pai da criana, caso se apresentasse
como corresponsvel, o incidente traria
o inconveniente de um casamento antes da
hora, encerrando precocemente uma fase
que no era s de estudos e formao
profissional, mas tambm de direito a
diverso irresponsvel, que, at ento,
estava reservada aos adolescentes do
sexo masculino.
O que significa essa valorizao da
gravidez e maternidade precoces, na mesma
cultura que encara a adolescncia como a

51

e crianas?
