b. GEOLOGY
The city of Manila and the rest of NCR lie on a continental shelf which has been
essentially formed by a ridge of volcanic tuff to the
The ridge is bounded by fluvial deposits of sand, gravel and clay. The east of
the ridge in Manila is similar deposits carried by Marikina River topping a valley
formed by downward and tilted fault.
A good part of Manila is situated in swamps and marshes, and its proximity to
the sea and waterways makes it strategic location for business, trade, and commerce.
c. TOPOGRAPHY
The Manila Citys topography is relatively flat with some portions below sea
level. During high tide the sea water goes about two kilometers inland along Pasig
River towards Laguna de Bay.
d. SOIL COMPOSITION
Major soils in the Soil Map of Manila consists of Eutropepts and Dystropepts
which both belong to the order Inceptisols.
Eutropepts are found on lime coating sedimentary rocks, such as marl or
terrace sediments, rich in primary calcium carbonate. On the calcareous marine
terrace areas, bordering various islands in the Philippines, Eutropepts are dominant.
e. WATER QUALITY
Successive changes in and around Manila Bay are largely due to the
intertwining impacts of continued industrialization, unrelenting increase in population,
and the incessant human activities catering to livelihood and habitation. These
factors are directly degrading the overall Environment of Manila Bay and these
impacts are manifested in the continued deterioration of the water quality.
f. CLIMATE
Under the Kppen climate classification system, Manila features a tropical
savanna climate (Kppen climate classification Aw). Together with the rest of the
Philippines, Manila lies entirely within the tropics. Its proximity to the equator rarely
going below 20 C (68 F) or above 38 C (100 F), Humidity levels are usually very
high all year round.
Manila has a distinct dry season from late December through May, and a
relatively lengthy wet season that covers the remaining period with warm
temperatures. In the rainy season. it rarely rains all day but the rainfall is very heavy
during short periods. Typhoons usually occur from June to September.
Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from 22C to 34C and is rarely
below20C or above 36C.
The length of the day varies significantly over the course of the year. The shortest day
is December 21with 11:17 hours of daylight; the longest day is June 20 with 12:59 hours of
daylight.
The earliest sunrise is at 5:26am on June 1 and the latest sunset is at 6:30pm on July 11.
The latest sunrise is at 6:25am on January 21 and the earliest sunset is at 5:24pm
on November 21
The median cloud cover ranges from 37% (mostly clear) to 86% (mostly cloudy). The sky is
cloudiest on August 23 and clearest on April 4.
The probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies throughout the year.
Precipitation is most likely around July 30, occurring in 77% of days. Precipitation is least likely
around April 2, occurring in 16% of days.
RELATIVE HUMIDITY
The relative humidity typically ranges from 51% (mildly humid) to 97% (very humid) over the
course of the year, rarely dropping below 41% (comfortable) and reaching as high
as 100% (very humid).
Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 0 m/s to 9 m/s (calm to fresh
breeze), rarely exceeding 17 m/s (gale).
The wind is most often out of the east (25% of the time), south east (12% of the time),
and west (12% of the time). The wind is least often out of the north (3% of the time), North
West (3% of the time), south (4% of the time), and north east (4% of the time).
