TheGatesheadMillenniumBridgeisapedestrianandcyclistbridge
spanningRiverTyneinEngland.Thebridgeisessentiallytwograceful
curves,oneformingthedeckandtheothersupportingit,spanningbetween
thetwoislandsrunningparalleltothequaysides.Toallowshipstopass
underneath,thiswholeassemblyrotatesasasingle,rigidstructure.Asthe
archtiltslower,thepathwayrises,eachcounterbalancingtheother,anda
pathwayovertheriverisformed.Theparaboliccurvesofthedeckextend
the105mcrossingdistancetoaround120m,givingenoughextralengthto
providetherequiredclearanceabovethewater.Theappearanceofthe

structureisbasicallyagianttrampolinethatencouragespeopletoembrace
theirinnerchildbyhoppingacrossthewater!Thisisabridgeconcept
proposedbyadesignfirminParis.
ThereisonesmallproblemwiththeParisianBouncyBridgethough:the
lawsuitswouldflowinlikethebutteroveraplateofescargot.Trampoline
injuriesareoneofthecornerstonesofpersonalinjuryliabilitythesedays.
Unfortunately,itisinsanelyeasytoinjureyourselfonatrampoline,and
eveneasiertobringalawsuitagainsttheownerifyouhaventsigneda
liabilitywaiver.Mostcommercialplaceshaveyousignonebeforebeingable
tousetheirtrampolines,butIcannotimaginetheParisiangovernment
beingabletogatherasignaturefromeveryonecrossingtheriver.
