Satyam - Question paper - 01 Conducted On -- 2-November-2003

PESIT, HOSKEREHALLY, Bangalore

Place :

COMPANY NAME : SATYAM

-----------------------------------------------------------DATE OF TEST : 2 Nov 2003
-----------------------------------------------------------PLACE OF TEST: PESIT, HOSKEREHALLY, Bangalore
-----------------------------------------------------------MODE : Off-Campus
-----------------------------------------------------------DURATION :
Hello,
This is Vinayak B. Joshi. Here is the satyam pattern which I faced at
PESIT,bangalore.
------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is it,
* Written test: 15-qustion. 1-mark for right answer, 1/4 minus for every wrong
answer.
I don't remember the questions exactly, but let me tell you.
1> e o e r e.... which is the next letter
2> A ship has a ladder which has 6 rungs. The first rung is 1 ft. above water. If tide
rises 1 ft for every 15 min. How many rungs will be under water after 1 hr.
3> Red, blak hat like questions which requires damn horrible patince ton look in to
the root of the problem and come up with answer. It was
from george summers.
4>Who is the billionaire among henry,everet..... Almost same question which was
asked in infosys october 12th test.
5> mango, orange problem.... basically from R.S.Agrawal book.
6> Two qustions from CAT logical reasoning. The ones having 4 figures, we have to
find the fifth. I was well prepared in that type. Most of the people got eliminated in
these kind of problems only. One should be very carefull while answering such
qeustions, b'coz you will find 2 figures which may look like right answers, but only
one has the exact relationship with the previous 4 figures. So, you should be carefull
in choosing such answers. I got them right.
7> Most of the rest were like george summers things, but modified perfectly. Like one
of them tell you the exact truth, one sometimes tell you the truth, one lies. So, startr
with which you see as wrong first. In my case I started with the thing which most
others thought it to be wrong. I wrote that as answer. I got it right.
8> A nawab gets out at a railway station 2 earlier to his scheduled arrival. He walks at
3mph speed. At the same time, when he left railway station a cab left his house so as
to reach the station just on time. He is walking towards his house. He got his cab on
the way and reched his house 1 hr before what everybody thought it as his scheduled
arrival. What is the distance between his house and railway station?
It is a very tricky railway station problem. Try to solve it. I will tell you the answer
later.

* GROUP Discussion:
1> Environmental pollution whose responsibility is it? {topic given to me}
2> Computer is a female or male?
I remember only this much. One should have a good command over the language and
the people around, then only he/she will be selected.
* HR-Tech interview:
It consists of HR-TEch both. A HR person and a tech engineer will be sitting
together. Such 6 groups will be there. So, one need not wait for more. He/she may get
any of these group. In tech interview tey will ask only about our project. Thatz very
easy. simultaneously HR person will interfere{if you are cruising smoothly in tech. ,
as in my case}and he is the person who will put you under sea. You will feel like a
fish put on road from water. It seems I did that one also perfectly. But, I should have
put my percentage as 75+ in the resume which they provide there. They provide there
own resume. So, I lost there in HR-Tech thing.
Few questions like:
" What is so special about software engineers?"
" If I give you a pen and make you to stand on top of this building and tell you too
calculate the total height of this building how will you do it?"
" Tell me about your personal life"{ probably here also I failed. I told about my family
and myself. I should has stressed more on my records"
-------------------------------------------------------Bye
Vinayak

Q: what r the prog. languages u had? I told Assembly,C,C++,JAVA,VB,VC++
Q: Which generation of language is Assembly? I told 2 gen, since firstly they used to
enter i/p in binary
then to simplify the work Assembly is introduced.

Q: What r 4th gen languages? I told i don't know
Q: What is STACK?
Q: Any other thing like STACK?

VOID pointers.
Q: What is the use of void ?
Q: Why do u need functions which return nothing?
Q: How do compile a JAVA program? Using JAVAC we compile and we get
'bytecode', then it is presented
to JVM which interprets the code and converts it into machine code.
Q: what is interpretation?
Q: What is differernce between Compilation and interpretation?
Q: In RDBMS what is referential integrety? I told about foreign and primary
constrains.
he said it is no where relevant to my question. I was calm.
Thats what i remember from my tech interview. What i feel is u only ANSWER TO
THE POINT ONLY.
then he has to ask something else or else he will dig deep from ur answers.
Again the HR took and started:

more than half an hour before a panel of three. LUCK also should favour.Any way
ALL THE BEST to all
for your respective endeavours.
Please somebody reply me, if possible , why i failed seeing my answers .

bye,

PESIT, HOSKEREHALLY, Bangalore

Place :

COMPANY NAME : SATYAM

-----------------------------------------------------------DATE OF TEST : 1 Nov 2003
-----------------------------------------------------------PLACE OF TEST: PESIT, HOSKEREHALLY, Bangalore
-----------------------------------------------------------MODE : Off-Campus
-----------------------------------------------------------DURATION :
Hello friends,

I received many mails congratulating me for getting job in SATYAM. Many asking
for details of SATYAM selection process and the QUESTION PAPER..

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL THOSE WISHED ME.

Sorry, I was not in station for two day,so I am sendind the paper lately.
Here are some details of the SATYAM selection process I faced and the question
paper.

Venue: PESIT, HOSKEREHALLY, BANGALORE.

DATES:

1 st NOV 2003 : Aptitude test

Group discussion (GD)

2nd NOV 2003 : TECHNICAL And HR interviews.

Selection procedure:

Half an hour aptitude test comprising of 15 questions, each correct question carries a
single mark and a wrong question has a 1/4 negative marks i.e-1/4.

Remember negative marking will be there, don't try to guess the answers. First choose
the questions which are easy and not lengthy. Believe me many question were very
easy but only thing is they will try to confuse you .

Written test is only APTITUDE .Does not contain any technical questions. Most of the
questions were from "QUATITATIVE APTITUDE BY R.S AGGARWAL" and
"SHAKUNTALA DEVI'S PUZZLE BOOKS". No verbal questions i.e no synonyms
and antonyms.

I don't remember the all the questions ,I am sending all the questions I remember but
not in order.

a) Question on Data interpretation : Question no. 12 FROM PAGE 514

b) Question on Data interpretation : Question no. 3 FROM PAGE 492
c) Question on series :

97, 114, 133, ?

Ans: 154

d) Question of series but there were numbers instead of numbers. I don't remember
the series but I just give a idea of such question.

R, T, P, R, U , P , ?

e) Question on counting the number of triangles ,given a big diagram.

f)One Question was like this:

if bag of black and white balls are given and told you to pick any two if they are of
same color throw them out and add a single ball of other color from the infinitely
available pool. if this process of throwing out 2 and adding 1 continues, then
eventually the bag gets emptied. if the exact status of number of black and white balls
are given then ,==some question was given and answers had 3 choices

i) black ii)white iii)data is not sufficient

g) Very first question had 11 sentences, If figures out a number. you need to use these
sentences and find that number.

Ex:

1) Either 11 sentence is true or 10 sentence

2) Any one of sentence 8 or nine is false.
3) .......
........

10)the required number is a perfect quare

11)the required number is a odd number

some stuff like this. These type of question takes much time. Attend such questions at
last.

h) Question on finding the door numbers of two friends. some 5 or 6 conditions were
given. similar kind of problem can be found in "SHAKUNTHALA DEVI PUZZLE
BOOKS"

I remember only these many questions.I don't know whether they are going to repeat
the same paper or not but one thing the pattern and the types of questions will be same
as I even compared to the previous question papers available in CHETANA PAPERS.

Group discussion:

The main elimination round of the SATYAM . Each group contains 8 members. For
my batch HR asked us to suggest us the topic and all 8 suggested 8 topics out of
which HR choose a topic and it was " DO YOU PREFER ABROAD EDUCATION
OR INDIAN EDUCATION " We were given two minute time to note down the
points.

I thought Indian education is good but many would go for that topic. so I thought of
arguing toward the ABROAD EDUCATION and I started the discussion. As I thought
earlier all the 7 were towards INDIAN EDUCATION and only I was against it. So I
got much of the opportunity to speak and argue. i was defending all the 7. Discussion
was very nice. The discussion went on for 15 - 20 minutes( a bit long time compared
to other as our discussion for good).Even HR was very friendly and he also
participated as one of the participant which gave me still more confidence.

TIPS for GD:

a) Be careful while you choose to discuss towards the topic or against the topic.
b) Predict how others may depend and write downs short points in a scrap paper.
c) If possible try to start first , if not no problem but try to speak atleast not keep
mum.
d) Be fixed to your attitude, it is if the opposite person argues strongly don't leave
your topic go towards others.
e) Never be in a neutral state i.e talking both towards as well as against. One girl in
our batch did so. She was accepting both the arguments and she was eliminated.
f) It's a discussion don't make it as DEBATE ,be cool. Don't jump on others. They test
your patience too when you are at heavy argument.Patience doesn't mean silence but
talk smoothly , try to convince your offenders.
g) Always have a smiling face, that will carry you towards the success.
h) Finally don't forget the conclude the discussion highlighting your strong points.

TECHNICAL AND INTERVIEWS:

Finally technical and HR round were together.

These questions surely based on the person who interviews you.

TECHINICAL:- Explanation of your project will a must, Only Project which you
have done in your final sem will be considered and you need to face many questions
on your project. So brush up your final sem project well.

Questions on FAFL .

A) Define FINATE AUTOMATA

B) NFA
C) DFA
D) RELATED QUESTIONS

Questions on c,c++

malloc,calloc, their differences,syntax

OPERATING SYSTEM

Process scheduling algorithms (ex:- round robin ............)

Virtual memory
Cache memory

Networks:

Routing algorithms.

Many more questions which I don't remember.YOUR CONFIDENCE PLAYS A KEY

ROLE.

HR INTERVIEW:

As usual

TELL ABOUT YOURSELF

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS
HOBBIES
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE POINTS IN YOURSELF.

THAT'S ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL......................
If any one got use of this information just intimate me,

Dear friends,
I have made it through Satyam. Test n intv. were
on 13th n 14th sep. I wish to express my sincere
gratitude to the moderator of Chetana as well as to
all its elite members.
I thank you for all the help and support u have
provided.Wishing all the members the very best.
I applied through talent_search@satyam.com n a few
more ids of satyam , but i don't know in whose
response i got the call. i don't remember rest of
them.
Reagrds
Naveen
Some of the questions which i remember n the procedure
is given below:
First of all a quantitative test is there..
15 ques were there.
ques were like these..i forgot exact wording but this
will definetly give u some idea.

1. a- this is first sentence of

b- this sentence follow second sentence
c- this sentence shows that this is logest among
all the sentences
d- ____
e- ____
f- this sentence is last sentence of the paragrahph
now arrange the above self descriptive sentences to
form a paragraph.
2. there are this many numbers of i.___ a's, ii 1 b ,
iii ___ c's, iv i d's, v __ e's, vi __ f's, vii __
g's, viii___ h's, ix ___ i's in this sentence.
( all the numbers are in roman numerals )
ans- so u have to count number of a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i
in the sentence simple.
e.g there are iii number of 'a' in the whole
sentence.
remeber as u right iii a's u have added three i's so
number of i's will increase in this way.
3. some xyz has to fence his field , he planned to do
it by putting the fences 5 ft apart, but when he
actually started putting fences he found that he has
got 4 no. of pole less so he put them 7ft apart to
cover the whole boundary.
what is the total length of the boundary to be
fenced.
ans: 5x = 7(x-4)
x=14 .... implies boundary = 14x 5 = 70 ft
4.
there r some code given for some company.
like
PQRSTGHJKJ
4567812309
DUE TO SOME SECURITY REASONS THE CODES R CHANGED .
GOPEBZXCVL
1239067854
four ques based on it.. which can be simple solved
by comparing alphabets to their corresponding
numbers.
e.g if code was PQR what is the cost according to
the new code if code is chaged to XCV.. that's it.

5. one speed distance question.( i forgot it).

6. if there r five students ( A B C D E ) who can
comunicate through emails.. then some routes r given
like A- B
A-E
B-D
........
que is to find how can B comunicate with c in min
number of stoppages.( remebr if ther is direct route
from b to c then that is not the one with min
stoppage. min means atleast one, so don't consider as
direct from b to c)
7. onne was like that there r certain number wroitten
to the base 3 ... then to identify some relations
between no..
it was a question with 4 subparts n full page

a) Question on Data interpretation : Question no.

Questions on c,c++

malloc,calloc, their differences,syntax

OPERATING SYSTEM

Process scheduling algorithms (ex:- round robin ............)

Virtual memory

Cache memory

Networks:

Routing algorithms.

Many more questions which I don't remember.YOUR CONFIDENCE PLAYS A KEY

ROLE.

HR INTERVIEW:

As usual

TELL ABOUT YOURSELF

I. Hacking is a crime made possible by a relatively new technology,
which one of the reasons it is often poorly understood and reported.
Many computers, but no means all,are now linked togetherin networks which
allow users on one computer to communicate with others on the same
network. If a computer is not networked,no manipulation of its datafrom
another machine is possible. So long as users are authorised, networking
is just a way of making work easier and more productive.Hacking on the
other hand,is the unauthorised use of networks or unauthorised entty
into the computers themselves. Most people do not need to break into the
networks they use, since they are already accredited users.
33. Most hackers are authorised to break into networks F
34. Computers are only vulerable to the unauthorised manipulation of
their data via another computer if they are networked T

whichmay have to be brought in from other countries. The second is

releasing organisms into the wild(or on to farms, from which they might
escape)that are completely novel, beacause they have been genetically
engineered. There is nothing intrinsically sinister about engineered
organisms, but any novelty must be regarded as a potential invader.
37.Pest control does not threat the conservation of flora and fauna. T
38.Genetically engineered organisms must always be regarded as potentially dangerous. F

K.electronics technology is coming to the

rescue of helicopters which can
be grounded or crash in icy conditions the machines are especially
vulnerable to the build up of ice on both their rotors and engine air
intake when operating in cold damp conditions.the problem is 2 fold
ice increases the weight and the build upp makes the aerofoils
less efficient .now at last a detector has been devised which the company
hopes will mean safer flightsand less frequent grounding.unlike most
devices in use at present it can detect the liquid water content of cloud
above freezing level.so the warning is ginven before the potential hazard
is encountered.
39.an electronic device has been invented which will prevent the build
up of ice on helicopter rotors F
40.helicopters are sometimes grounded because in cold damp weather their
engine air intakes and rotors malfuntion
owing to the formatrion of ice.

prepondreance although not a proliferation of asymmtry.whether or not
the expression is volitinal and self controlled or spontaneous appears
to predict facial asymmetry as does the type of emotion protrayed.positive
