Mortality reinsurance

RGA’s superior expertise in life reinsurance has developed over many years, a natural growth of our strong focus on core services. We reinsure one of the largest in-force blocks in the life insurance industry – approximately $2.9 trillion – and we have built up one of the largest databases of mortality risk.

Drawing upon this extensive database of mortality information, we excel in competitive pricing and sound underwriting. Our volume of business provides a solid basis for understanding the effects of selection, underwriting criteria, and the effects of mortality improvement over time.

Incorporating our expertise with competitive pricing and high service standards, we are able to help our clients:

n

Write more business

n

Manage capital more efficiently

n

Reduce the cost of death claims

n

Integrated SolutIonS

Mortality is influenced by a complex interaction of factors that produces different rates of change in different classes of insured lives. RGA performs specific mortality assumption investigations for our client insurers, so we can help them to interpret trends in pricing statistics.

By transferring mortality risk to RGA, insurers are able to price their products more competitively, and free up capital by reducing risk-to-earnings volatility and reducing the amount of surplus required. With our impressive arsenal of experience and innovation, RGA can help clients meet their life insurance and capital management goals more effectively.

Financial Solutions

RGA’s team of professionals is adept in measuring and quantifying insurance and investment risks, and can assist in determining the level of economic capital necessary for life and annuity products. We add value to the enterprise risk- management process by formulating solutions to meet our clients’ individual needs.

Financial Reinsurance

Traditional risk transfer is only one of the ways in which RGA helps clients achieve their financial objectives. In addition to reinsuring a wide range of life and health products, we help clients navigate complex capital-planning problems through the use of financial reinsurance – also known as capital- motivated reinsurance. Our experienced actuarial and financial professionals are recognized leaders in the financial reinsurance industry, and they possess in-depth knowledge of regulatory issues.

RGA pioneered the use of reinsurance as a financial manage- ment tool, one of the most flexible and efficient tools available to insurers today. We can assist clients in evaluating the merits

of using financial reinsurance to meet their objectives so they

achieve a more efficient deployment of capital, as well as enjoy

enhanced returns on capital invested.

A wide range of financial management needs can be met

through capital-motivated reinsurance. RGA supports clients with capital-planning issues through strategic products that:

n

Reduce cost of capital

n

Redeploy capital from low- to high-return investments

n

Offset strain caused by acquisition costs

n

Improve product ROE by decreasing the amount of supporting capital

n

Support sales growth

While an insurer may need to raise additional outside capital to fund growth, a well-structured reinsurance program can provide the following advantages over other financing alternatives:

Asset-Intensive Reinsurance

Sales of fixed and variable accumulation products can vary widely due to interest rates and other market forces. Asset- intensive reinsurance permits RGA’s clients to take advantage of growth opportunities that might otherwise stretch available capital or add excessive investment risk to their balance sheets. Asset-intensive products comprise any business with significant asset performance and/or interest-rate risk.

By participating in an asset-intensive reinsurance program with RGA, clients access our expertise of product design and asset/ liability management strategy.

RGA also provides reinsurance solutions for capital strain caused by other interest-sensitive savings and protection products including universal life, extended term, disabled life reserves, whole life, corporate-owned life insurance, and bank-owned life insurance. As one of the world’s largest reinsurers of fixed and variable annuity products, we help our clients structure annuity and other asset-intensive reinsurance programs that mitigate risk and support business growth.

Longevity Reinsurance

Tightening actuarial standards and practices pertaining to longevity risk have led many insurers and pension plan trustees to seek longevity risk mitigation. RGA offers its clients customized longevity risk transfer solutions, with and without the transfer of investment risk, designed to transfer existing liabilities to better manage clients’ exposure to future annuitant mortality, In addition to bulk transactions and supporting pension plan buy-ins and buy-outs, RGA also offers insurers support in developing, underwriting and managing underwritten life annuity products, where RGA provides appropriate annuity rates based upon those individuals’ current state of health.
