HOW TO BE A GOOD LEADER?

(Topic: Roles and Responsibilities - Spirituality in Leadership)
By Rev. Roli Arangote
I. Introduction
A. Setting the Mood
a. Shake hands with 3 persons in this room and tell him/her You look great!
b. Shake hands with another 3 persons in this room and tell him/her Jesus
loves you!
Realization:
a. Who among you firmly held the hands of another during handshake? It
speaks confidence. Confidence is a must in leadership.
b. Who among you made an eye to eye contact while saying You look great
or Jesus loves you? Eye to eye contact speaks of your sincerity. Sincerity
is a must in leadership.
c. Who among you did the instruction with a smile? Smile builds relationship.
Good relationship is a must in leadership.
B. Illustration from the Bible
Exodus 18:13-23
13
The next day, Moses took his seat to hear the peoples disputes against each
other. They waited before him from morning till evening.
14
When Moses father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked,
What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone
while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?
15
Moses replied, Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God. 16When
a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between
the quarreling parties. I inform the people of Gods decrees and give them his
instructions.

17

This is not good! Moses father-in-law exclaimed. 18Youre going to wear

yourself outand the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you
to handle all by yourself. 19Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of
advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the peoples
representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. 20Teach them Gods
decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives.
21
But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God
and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand,
one hundred, fifty, and ten. 22They should always be available to solve the
peoples common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the
leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the
load, making the task easier for you. 23If you follow this advice, and if God
commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures,
and all these people will go home in peace.
Lesson: One is too small a number to achieve greatness. You need others to
accomplish the task in efficient and effective way. You need people to go with
you. And it takes leadership skill to make people follow you and go with you.
II. UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP
A. Leadership Definition
- Leadership is influence, influencing other people to go with you.
o The very essence of all power to influence lies in getting the other
person to participate. (Harry A. Overstreet)
o He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following him is only
taking a walk. (John Maxwell)
- Leadership is the ability to influence the people to go with you and bring
them from here to there
B. Important Leadership Elements
1. Knowledge knowledge is an understanding of information.
- I KNOW it
2. Skills skills is an ability to perform task. A skill is useless without knowledge.
- I CAN do it
3. Attitude attitude is internal driver for behaviour to do it or not to do it
- I WILL do it

Given that there is high level of knowledge and skills, the success or failure of
any organization depends in the attitude of its member or constituents.
Right attitude is a MUST if you want to go from HERE TO THERE. Right
attitude is a MUST if you want to go from NOTHING TO SOMETHING. Right attitude is
a MUST if you want to go FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRA-ORDINARY. Right attitude
distinguish a good leader from a bad one.
4. Vision Know where you are going
- Leading is giving the people a direction where to go and influencing them
to go there with you
- Proverbs 29: 18 Where there is no vision, the people perish(KJV)
- Proverbs 28:18 Without revelation people run wild
God-given dream is called vision while personal dream is called ambition.
Selfish ambition comes when you force everything to happen in your own
way at your own time just to achieve your dream/desire.
Great vision comes from God. When you neglect God and take Him out of
the picture in your organization, you will just see your picture and every
dream you want to achieve. Most of theVision
problems in the organization are
caused by people who only see themselves and their dreams.

5. Influence
- Influence is not acquired. It is earned throughout life journey.
III. UNDERSTANDING THE 5 LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP (John Maxwell Developing
the Leader Within You)
Position Rights
People follow because they have to. Note: The longer you stay here, the higher the
turnover and the lower the morale of subordinates.
Permission Relationships
People follow because they want to. This level allows work to be fun. Caution:
Staying too long on this level without rising will cause highly motivated people to
become restless.
Production Results

People follow because of what you have done for the organization. Note: This is
where success is sensed by most people. They like you and what you are doing.
Problems are fixed with very little effort because of momentum.

People Development - Reproduction

People follow because of what you have done for them. Note: This is where longrange growth occurs. Your commitment to developing leaders will ensure ongoing
growth to the organization and to people. Do whatever you can to achieve and stay
on this level.
Personhood Respect
People follow because of who you are and what you represent. Note: This step is
reserved for leaders who have spent years growing people and organizations. Few
make it. Those who do are bigger than life
Connect this to the Life and Leadership of Jesus
Vision: The vision of God is that time will come that God and His people will live
together in His kingdom
Mission: To seek and save the lost and make them followers of Christ
What leadership style Jesus did?
Jesus had no leadership position when He began his mission. He did not use
His rights in order for people to follow Him.
But He focused first in building relationship with people until He was able to
create His 12 disciples.
=> Permission: People follow Him because they want to.
Then together with His disciples, they continue the mission and they produce
results: People were healed, people were transformed, and people received hope.
This is a realization of their mission in the kingdom of God.
=> Production: His disciples follow Him because of what He has done for the
kingdom of God.
Then He focused His time in developing His disciples. He equipped and
empowered them to do and continue the mission to realize the vision. Most of His
disciples became loyal to Him and eager to do the mission. His disciples were able
to continue the mission even Jesus was not with them anymore.
=> People Development. His disciples follow Him because what He had done
for them. Jesus added value to them
And today, almost all the people in this world have a high respect to Jesus
and continue the work He had started.
=> Personhood. People follow Him because of who He is and what He
represents
IV. UNDERSTANDING YOUR ROLE AS A LEADER IN THE ORGANIZATION

Vision

Leader above you

Peers

You

Peers

Subordinates
The reality today is this: You are part of the organization but you are not at
the top leadership. But the organization has put you in a certain level of leadership
position where it believes that you can be a great help to realize the vision of the
organization.
Your personal mission as leader is to bring everyone to the vision of
organization. And to bring everyone to the direction of the organization is to
influence everyone. And you need the genuine leadership because leadership is
influence => influencing everyone to go with you from here to there.
The Myths of Leading from the Middle of an Organization
Myth 1: The Position Myth: I cant lead if I am not at the top
Myth 2: The Destination Myth: When I get to the top, then Ill learn to lead
Myth 3: The Influence Myth: If I were on top, then people would follow me.
Myth 4: The Inexperience Myth: When I get to the top, Ill be in control
Myth 5: The Freedom Myth: When I get to the top, Ill no longer be limited
Myth 6: The Potential Myth: I cant reach my potential if Im not the top leader
Myth 7: The All-or-Nothing Myth: If I cant get to the top, then I wont try to lead
These are myths because some people think that to better lead people is to be at
the top, which is not true.
The TRUTH is you can lead even you are at the middle of an organization.
The TRUTH is you can influence the leader above you to trust you, rely on you, and
look to you for advice.
The TRUTH is you can influence your peers even you have the same position with
them.
The TRUTH is you can influence your subordinates not because you are in higher
position.
V. HOW TO LEAD (INFLUENCE) OTHERS FROM THE MIDDLE? (SOME
APPLICATIONS)
1. Lead yourself well
- Ephesians 4:1 Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead
a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. (NLT)
- Ephesians 4:1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life
worthy of the calling you have received. (NIV)
a. Manage your emotion
______________________
By Rev. Roli S. Arangote, August 14, 2015

Good leaders know when to display emotions and when to delay

them John Maxwell
Manage your thinking
o A minute of thinking is often more valuable than an hour of talk or
unplanned work.
Manage your words
o James 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts
of the body. It corrupts the whole body
Manage your time and your priorities.
Manage your energy
o Activity without Direction doing things that dont seem to matter
o Burden without Action not being able to do things that really
matter
o Conflict without Resolution not being able to deal with whats the
matter
Manage your personal life (including family)
o What would it profit a leader to climb to the top ladder of success
but loses his family and friends?
If you want to influence people, lead yourself first. If you cant lead
yourself, who will follow you, who will respect you, who will go with you?

2. Lighten the load of the leader above you

- Hebrews 13:17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their
authorityDo this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that
would be of no benefit to you.
- You can lift your leader up or take him down. Or you can make the load of
your leader lighter or make it heavier, which do you think is good?
- Remember this: If you will help the load of your leader, you help your
leader succeed. When your leader succeeds, the organization succeeds
together with you. But if your leader fails because of heavy burden, the
organization fails together with you.
- Lifting your leader lifts you also
- When you lift up your leader, it makes you get noticed.
o Even others are not aware of what you are doing, the person being
lifted surely noticed you. Lifting up your leader must be an ongoing
process to make them feel you add value to them so they can also
add value to you.
o When you lift up your leader once or twice the leader may respond,
Thanks.
o When you lift up your leader many times, he may say, I need you.
o When you lift him up continually, he may say, Let me help you.
- When you lift up your leader it increases your value and influence.
o The lift you give for the leader often leads to the leader lifting you.
Load lifters have a special place in the heart of their leader.
- How to lift the load of your leader
a. Do the best you can in your responsibilities and be accountable to it
b. When you find a problem, provide a solution. Dont blame your leader
for a problem. Help him to find solution.

c. Tell true information to your leader, nothing more, and nothing less.
Good leaders want the truth even if it hurts. True information is vital
for creating an effective plan of action.
d. Take an extra effort, extra responsibility and extra thinking
e. Stand up for your leader whenever you can
f. Promote your leader to others
When you lift up your leaders, you become a model to your peers and to
your subordinates. You are demonstrating them to do the same because it
is the right thing to do. Your peers and subordinates will likely help you to
lighten your load. If that happens, you earned the opportunity to influence
them. It means, it increases your leadership level.
When you do good to others, God will reward you: Ephesians 6:7-8 Serve
wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you
know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does

3. Add Value to Others

- Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
- Completing with one another is far better than competing with one
another
- 1 Corinthians 12:21-26 14Yes, the body has many different parts, not just
one part. 15If the foot says, I am not a part of the body because I am not
a hand, that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear
says, I am not part of the body because I am not an eye, would that
make it any less a part of the body? 17If the whole body were an eye, how
would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell
anything? 18But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part
just where he wants it. 19How strange a body would be if it had only one
part!
20
Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21The eye can never say to
the hand, I dont need you. The head cant say to the feet, I dont need
you. 22In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least
important are actually the most necessary. 23And the parts we regard as
less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully
protect those parts that should not be seen, 24while the more honorable
parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together
such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have
less dignity. 25This makes for harmony among the members, so that all
the members care for each other. 26If one part suffers, all the
parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are
glad.
- The truth is that every part of the body is valuable. Same also in the
organization, every member has value.
- Good leaders know how to add value to others. To add value to others is to
help them in their weaknesses and to develop them in their strengths
- When you add value to others they will feel you care for them
- Leadership Principle: Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand
(John Maxwell)

To be a better leader that adds value to others, understand this Leadership

Loop:
a. Caring Take an interest in People
o People dont care how much you know unless they know how much
you care
o Touch the heart first before asking for the hand
b. Learning Get to Know People
o Hear stories from your peers
o Discover their best skills
o Appreciate their differences
o Try to put yourself in their shoes
c. Appreciating Respect People
o Treat others with respect
o Appreciate people for who they are and they will be more likely to
respect and listen to you in return
d. Contributing Add Value to People
o Help your peers to improve and develop without strings attached
e. Verbalizing Affirm People
o Acknowledge their accomplishments. Say positive things about
them to your leader and peers. Sincerely compliment them.
f. Leading Influence People
o If you do the Caring, Learning, Appreciating, Contributing, and
Verbalizing, you built relationship with them, you gain credibility
and shown that your motives are good. With that track record, you
have earned the opportunity to influence them. But it should not
end here. The next phase is important.
g. Succeeding Win with People
o The motivation to lead must be to see the vision fulfilled and to see
others succeed
o Great leaders dont use people so that they can win. They lead
people so that they all can win together
o Once leaders prove that they can help make peoples dreams come
true, others seek them out so that they, too, can be helped to win
o If you add value to others and helped them succeed, additional
people will come into your life that you can help and be a help for
you in order for you to win together.
VI. CONCLUSION
If this happens to every person in an organization (referring to leaders led
themselves well, leaders lighten the load of their leader, and leaders add value to
others), what do you think will happen to the organization? What do you think will
happen to the vision and mission of the organization?
As John Maxwell says, Everything rises and falls on leadership. In the Bible
in the Old Testaments, Israel nation was blessed by God because of the obedience
of the people. This is because they have leaders who were righteous before God.
But later on, Israel was led to its downfall. The downfall of Israel was caused by
kings who became wicked who led the people to disobey God. So God brought
disaster and punishment to them.

Desire to be a good leader. What makes the difference between a good leader
and other kind of leader is the heart.
Luke 6:45 (NLT) A good person produces good things from the treasury of a
good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil
heart.
Good leaders possessed good heart and they produce good things. Good
leaders do not just focus in achieving the goals of the organization but helping also
others to achieve their personal goals and dreams. Good leaders do not just add
value to the organization but they also add value to the people in the organization.
Reflect on this: Don't let your failures hinder you to achieve greatness. But
don't let your desire for greatness destroy your goodness. Remember, it's far better
to be good than to be great. rholquotes
